"Okay," I murmured, and with a simple command, I pulled up my status screen. The sheer amount of notifications I'd received was one thing, but seeing the result of it all was another.

My eyes widened. My core stats had jumped significantly, but my HP, MP, and Stamina pools were massive now.
"Uhh, Voltaris," I said, my voice laced with confusion. "Why are my stats so high? Kokabiel wasn't that much stronger than the serpent."
'Did you forget my primary magical ability, partner?' he asked, a hint of pride in his draconic voice. 'I absorb the power of my vanquished foes and add a portion of it to your own. That 'Absorb' wasn't just for the light spear.'
"Oh, cool. But why's my health, magic, and stamina up so much? The core stats didn't jump that high."
"Hmm, that is unusual," Voltaris mused. "Perhaps because you absorbed so much raw holy power from him, more than your core could handle at once. So, the system diverted the overflow into your resource pools. When I used my ability in my prime, it would always just increase my own strength."
Just then, two more notifications popped up, one after the other.

"Okay, now I have to ask," Voltaris grumbled. "What the fuck?"
"Hey, don't look at me," I said, just as bewildered as he was. It was then that a thought, so obvious it was almost stupid, hit me with the force of a train.
"I can make Pisti and Morgiana peerage members," I said aloud.
"You are just now realizing that?"
"Yep."
I pulled the ornate box containing my Evil Pieces from my inventory. The polished wood felt cool and heavy in my hands. I left my room and went looking for them, my footsteps echoing softly in the grand hallway. I found them in the kitchen, along with Rias, Akeno, Asia, Sona, and Koneko. It looked like some sort of serious meeting was in progress. Sanji was at the stove, making tea, and when he saw me, he frantically mouthed the words 'DON'T' and 'GO AWAY'.
I was about to take his advice and back away slowly, but it was too late.
"Shiro," Koneko's monotone voice cut through the quiet. "How long have you been standing there?"
Every head in the room snapped toward me.
"I, uh, just got here," I said, holding up the box. "I wanted to ask Pisti and Morgiana something."
Their gazes shifted from me to the box and back again.
"We were actually just about to ask them the same thing," Asia said with a small, hopeful smile.
"Oh," I said, stepping forward. "Well, here. How about I do it? Do you two want to be in my peerage?"
"Yes!" Pisti chirped immediately, her eyes sparkling.
"Yep," Morgiana added with a firm, decisive nod.
I placed the box on the large kitchen table and opened it. The crimson chess pieces seemed to drink in the light. Alucard and Zoro came in from the adjoining training room, drawn by the proceedings, and leaned against the doorframe to watch.
"Pisti, you first," I instructed. "Just put your hand over the pieces. Whichever one glows, that's yours."
She eagerly moved her hand over the Queen piece, but there was no reaction. The same for the Rook, Knight, and Bishop pieces. Kinda thought she'd be a Bishop, with her magic, I thought.
Then, her hand passed over the row of Pawn pieces. One of them flared with a brilliant crimson light. Pisti's cheerful expression fell, a flicker of disappointment crossing her face. I picked up the glowing piece.
"Do you know what a pawn is?" I asked gently.
"A sacrifice," she mumbled, looking at the floor.
I reached out and gently flicked her forehead. "No," I said, my voice firm but kind. "It's one of the most important pieces, if not the most important piece besides the King. Yes, there are eight of them, but that's the point. A pawn that reaches the other side of the board can be promoted to any other piece besides the King. Your potential is unlimited. You can become anything, and I will be by your side to help you do it. I'll ask you again: what is a pawn?"
Her eyes met mine, the disappointment replaced by a dawning understanding. "It's… the key to victory."
"That's one way to put it," I said with a smile. I held the glowing piece over her chest. "As the King commands, so shall it be. I, Shiro, ask this of you. Become part of my family. Be with me on our path to greatness."
The Pawn dissolved in a shower of red light and sank into her chest.
"Okay, Morgie, your turn," I said, turning to Morgiana.
Her cheeks flushed a faint pink. "M-Morgie?"
"Oops," I said with a grin. "Sorry, not sorry."
I saw her pout a little, but she stepped forward and did the same as Pisti. She started at the Queen, then moved down the line. When her hand passed over one of the Rook pieces, it glowed with a powerful, steady light. I couldn't help but smile.
"I knew it," I said, picking up the piece. I held it over her chest. "As the King commands, so shall it be. I ask of you, be my sword, and I will be your shield. I shall protect you with all of my abilities, and I hope for the same from you. I now welcome you to our family."
The Rook piece melted into her chest, and I felt the bond between us snap into place, solid and unbreakable.
