The silence Shiro left behind was heavy and suffocating. Pisti stared at the spot where the furious little boy had vanished into the trees, her hands clenched at her sides. A wave of guilt washed over her, so potent it made her feel sick.
"How could I be so stupid," she whispered, running a hand through her blonde hair in frustration.
Morgiana stepped closer, her usual stoic expression softened with a rare hint of comfort. "It's okay, Pisti. You didn't know."
"But it's my job to know!" Pisti's voice cracked with emotion as she turned to face her friend. "My Sacred Gear, Mother Nature, it's not just for talking to animals. I am supposed to be an extension of life itself! I should be able to hear the feelings of everything that breathes—humans, devils, angels, every blade of grass and every desperate heart. I am meant to be their voice, because I and only I can truly listen!"
She looked down at her hands, as if they had personally failed her.
"But it's not that simple, is it?" Morgiana said softly, her practical nature cutting through Pisti's distress.
"No," Pisti admitted, her shoulders slumping. "I don't know why… but I can't read him. It's like trying to look into a storm. There's so much pain and rage there, it's a wall. When I try to sense his feelings, it's not like sensing you, or… or a tree."
A small smile touched Morgiana's lips. "Please don't lump me in with a tree."
The brief moment of levity seemed to strengthen Pisti's resolve. She took a deep breath, her eyes hardening with determination as she pushed herself to her feet and brushed the dirt from her clothes.
"Are you going to look for him?" Morgiana asked, already knowing the answer.
"Yes," Pisti declared, her voice now firm and clear. "I'm going to find him, and I'm going to right what I have wronged."
Morgiana stood up beside her, a loyal shadow. "Not without me."
"Okay," Pisti said, managing a small, grateful smile. "Let's do this."
They had only taken a few steps into the dense forest when a distant, earth-shaking BOOM echoed through the trees, followed by a guttural roar that was decidedly not human. The two women exchanged a worried glance and broke into a run.
….
I was pissed. A white-hot anger burned in my chest, not really at Pisti, but at the memories she had accidentally dragged up.
The feeling was a familiar poison, and my body was already reacting. My Dragon Eyes were active, tinting the world in shades of crimson, and I could feel the sharp points of my teeth against my bottom lip.
A deep, rumbling voice echoed in the back of my mind. It was Voltaris.
"You need to calm down, partner. Your draconic rage is threatening to take over."
Then I'll let it! I snarled back in my thoughts. It was easier than feeling the old pain.
Just then, the undergrowth crashed and splintered. A pack of giant, lizard-like creatures burst into the clearing.
They were the size of cars, with scaly green hides, powerful legs, and jaws filled with dagger-like teeth. There were seven of them, and they were all looking at me like I was their next meal.
Perfect. I needed something to hit.
A fiery aura exploded around me, kicking up dust and wilting the nearby ferns. With a yell, I charged straight at them. I leaped high into the air, soaring over their snapping jaws, and aimed for the center of the pack.
"FIRE DRAGON IRON FIST!"
I slammed my flame-wreathed fist into the ground. The impact was immense. The earth shattered, sending fissures cracking outwards and creating a deep crater that threw the lizards off balance.
I landed lightly in the chaos, immediately grabbing one by its thick tail. With a roar of my own, I spun it around and flung it high into the air.
I didn't give it a chance to fall. I shot up above it, my leg enveloped in a claw of pure fire.
"FIRE DRAGON TALON!"
My kick connected with its spine, sending the damn thing crashing back down to earth with enough force to shake the trees. I landed on the back of another lizard, using it as a springboard to launch myself away as I took a deep breath.
"FIRE DRAGON BRILLIANT FLAME!"
I spat a concentrated, sun-hot fireball that engulfed the creature I'd just jumped from, incinerating it instantly. I pivoted, my lungs already drawing in more air as two more turned to face me.
"FIRE DRAGON RO-O-OAAARRR!"
A massive torrent of fire erupted from my mouth, a roaring inferno that washed over the pair and turned them to cinders. Now only three remained. They hesitated, their primal brains finally sensing danger, but it was too late. I landed before them, dropping into a low stance and drawing all the fire around me into my hands.
"FIRE DRAGON SACRED ART…" I began, the magic crackling between my palms as it formed into spinning blades of pure heat. "FLAME LOTUS EXPLODING FLAME BLADES!"
The fiery blades shot forward, multiplying and weaving through the air in a deadly dance before slamming into the last three lizards. The resulting explosion was colossal, vaporizing them and taking out a huge chunk of the forest in a wave of searing heat.
Silence fell. The only sound was the crackling of lingering flames. A surge of power and satisfaction pulsed through me. A screen flickered in my mind's eye.

The anger was gone, burned away in the firestorm. I threw my head back and let out a triumphant, earth-shaking dragon's roar that echoed for miles.
When I was done, a wide, happy grin spread across my face. "All better!"
"You have company."
I turned around at Voltaris's warning. Standing at the edge of the smoking crater I'd made were Pisti and Morgiana. They were covered in a fine layer of dust and soot from the explosion, looking completely stunned. Pisti even had a small, leafy twig stuck in her hair.
I gave them a cheerful wave. "Hi!"
Pisti just stared, her mouth slightly open in shock. "A… a dragon," she whispered, her eyes wide. "He's a dragon."
Morgiana was more composed, her gaze sharp and analytical. "What was that magic you just used?"
"Dragon Slayer magic," I said proudly.
Pisti blinked, processing that. "A dragon… using Dragon Slayer magic."
I crossed my arms and puffed out my cheeks in a pout. "I can do whatever I want."
To my surprise, Morgiana let out a small, musical giggle. Pisti just sighed, looking like she was already getting a headache. "I'm going to have my hands full, it seems."
I couldn't resist sticking my tongue out at her.
Her expression softened, and the guilt returned to her eyes. "Shiro… I'm sorry about before. I shouldn't have pushed."
My playful mood didn't falter. I just shrugged. "Oh, that? It's not your fault. You didn't know."
"Okay then," Morgiana said, stepping forward carefully over the scorched earth.
"So!" I said, clapping my hands together. "Where is this water serpent? I just want to see it. I promise I won't fight it yet."
