The train to Edinburgh was smooth. Too smooth, almost, like it was giving me too much time to think.
I sat by the window with my laptop open and a coffee cooling in the cup holder, but I wasn't really working. I kept catching myself smiling like an idiot at nothing.
Because an hour ago I had kissed Edward in the car park. In public. At a train station, with commuters rushing past and security pretending not to see.
It hadn't felt like a shock. It hadn't felt wrong, or risky, or like something I needed to hide.
It had just felt normal. Like this was what we were supposed to have been doing all along, and I was furious with myself for how long I'd kept him tucked away in some quiet corner of my life.
My phone buzzed on the table.
Edward: Made it to London. Fancy coach is very fancy. Missing you already.
Me: Don't get used to the luxury. You'll go soft.
Edward: Too late.
