"Family." A simple mutter out of the dragon's snout.
An oddly shaped mud abode with a hay roof, with sand in her feet. A very normal way to live here in this place. It's collectively known as the dragon's tail, this coastal settlement of dragons is the main farmers of the kingdom.
The sweat can be smelled from afar.
An orange door handle in her claw.
The young dragonoid opened the door with a tense feeling in her chest. There was something... off.
"..." Her claws rested against the open door frame.
The red nest of her family. A small but at least lit abode with a central kitchen and crudely made beds near the often used fireplace. The mud brick walls adorned with drawings on papyrus paper. Her drawings were colored with finger paints.
"I am home, ma." She looked around her home.
It was oddly cool in her family home, noticed Agnar even though it was already summer's brightest days. Dragonoids were cold-blooded creatures, so the cold air was minimal.
"Ma?" She was calling out for her mother.
Agnar realized and her eyes were wide.
She was abandoned and felt unsure about this.
The fireplace was still warm and the kitchen was a mess, but nothing seemed missing or gone. It was all still there.Just... There was an envelope with a golden stamp on it.
"Oh no." Agnar hunched over it quickly, almost breaking the envelope into two while reading it.
"Dearest daughter,
I know things have been tough for you and I know deep in my heart that you will get anything you want in the future.
Thus I am writing you this letter to let you realize your heritage, Agnar. You weren't born into a family of nobodies.
You are the future of the Feuer.
Our family outlived the royals and were the original holders of the grey rock. We even owned the ladder to heaven, the same building that allowed us to communicate with the gods.
We gave up our rule out of the good of our hearts, but we were tricked. That is why I am gone for a time and will be proclaimed missing, but don't believe that. Never.
Because I am going to take back the throne with my own claws.
Sincerely yours.
Rene Agnar Feuer or Ma"
"Oh mom... What in the world did you do...?" An uncomfortable silence overcame her as the thoughts flooded. The letter in her claws tore, Agnar wasn't having it. This wasn't a good day.
No.
She had to stop her mom.
She... didn't want to lose her mom to this insanity she just read; This was foolish. She needed help but who would-...
...
The weird cat?
The thief?
That sounded ridiculous but this letter was more ridiculous. What if her dad would-... Oh. Haha, she had no dad. He died years ago, it was too much right now.
She was a crybaby in her heart.
A loose-y doosy.
A failure... but that failure learned to fly with that cat.
She grabbed her things, and then went after him again like a fool hunting its own tail. She took her cooking equipment, edibles and even one drawing of her mom. She loved her mom too much to let her die like that. This was suicide in Agnar's eyes.
She needs... a lot of luck to find him again, but maybe, with his skills, he was able to help save her mother from this path of self-destruction.
...
Why did she think this again?
Despite her troubles, she went after the cat now. The last place they met was the traveller's guild, a now destroyed place.
She began to walk and then run to it.
It wasn't that far.
and it still was day.
...
It's starting to rain again, normal weather. She searched everywhere for him.
Chains clanked on the ground, people were dragged to somewhere.
Unusually, guards were on high alert. The townsfolk were running away from something big, escaping through the many side streets. Agnar had no mind as she searched after the cat until...
Red.
Red symbols, Agnar's body froze.
Odd crosses, She... drew this.
...Those were her drawings.
A crest of two dragons.
She drew that.
"Odd for 'em to make a scene. It's probably a traitor." The voice was the same as before and Agnar opened her snout. A Black cat with the same outfit that stood here all ready.
"I searched everywhere for you."
But her voice didn't come out as she saw her mother being dragged to a cross.
Katten realized that this... traitor.
It's coronation, the bells were loud and clear. She was dead the moment they hanged her on that cross.
Was the dragon's relative, she was her relative.
Oh mother. What did you do?
Katten clawed her back from the podium.
That letter wasn't meant for Agnar to follow her mother but to scare her away.
...She wanted to protect her dear little dragon. The cat held her back as the guards nailed her on that cross and the only thing they both could do was watch. That day burned into Agnar's memory.
Katten only grasped the importance.
That day.
That day.
That... day.
As her mother bled out and she had to watch it happen.
It was to protect her child and Agnar cried into Katten. She didn't-
She never said at least goodbye.
Katten held her without saying a word. He did not know or say anything and just stood there to comfort.
Thus was life in Rivernest.
