Chapter 59: Potion
"The Caretaker of Hogwarts, Argus Filch!" Dudley called from 20 meters away.
Argus, hearing someone call his name, turned around to see who it was. His usually frowning face brightened slightly when he recognized Dudley.
"Dudley Dursley!" Argus said, a bit excited, then he noticed someone beside Dudley. "Who's this?"
"She's one of my friends, Hermione Granger," Dudley introduced.
"You told her?" Argus Filch said angrily, his previously happy face turning grim upon realizing that his secret had been exposed.
"Yes, she knows you're a Squib," Dudley responded, seemingly unconcerned by Argus's anger.
Hermione sensed something was wrong with Argus.
"You told her I'm a Squib!" Argus repeated, his anger flaring as he moved towards Dudley, ready to strike.
Suddenly, Dudley pulled something from his pocket.
"This is a Maxima Potion," Dudley said.
Argus, who had been about to hit him, stopped in his tracks, his eyes now fixated on the potion.
"Can I... can I really become a wizard?" Argus asked, tears welling up in his eyes.
"This is my first product. I need to test it on you, but there's only a 30% chance you could become a wizard," Dudley replied. "Are you willing?"
"A 30% chance is better than staying stuck as a Squib. Give me that potion," Argus Filch said, determined.
--- Flashback: Maxima Potion ---
"In the game, this potion makes magic at least twice as strong," Dudley had said, staring at the potion. "Will it work the same way in this world?"
"Only one way to find out," Dudley had replied before opening the cap and drinking the potion.
He felt it immediately—the magic surging wildly through his body. From his mouth, it coursed to his heart, then spread throughout his body. The magic was more potent and powerful than ever before, and he could feel every bit of it.
"Please make this room suitable for using a Bombarda spell," Dudley said three times before the Room of Requirement shifted into a larger space, complete with a practice dummy.
Without wasting time, Dudley channeled the magic into his wand and cast Bombarda toward the dummy.
In an instant—
Boom!
Though Dudley had expected it, the spell's effect was at least three times more powerful than usual.
"Hahaha, it looks like potions from the game work in this world!" Dudley exclaimed.
He then took a needle and drew his blood, checking it under a microscope. To his amazement, his DNA glowed twice as brightly as before he drank the potion. His DNA would light up whenever he channeled magic into his bloodstream.
The only question left was how long the potion's effects would last. In the game, the effect only lasted 20 seconds before diminishing. But now, three minutes had already passed.
Dudley kept checking his wristwatch. Five minutes turned into ten, and finally, at the 20-minute mark, the surge of magic stopped, and his body returned to normal.
"Looks like 20 minutes is the maximum," Dudley noted.
---Focus Potion---
"Can the effect last longer?" Dudley wondered, pleased that the effect lasted more than 20 seconds in this world, though it would be even more valuable if it could last longer.
He scanned the other ingredients in the Room of Requirement, and his gaze landed on the Focus Potion. In the game, Focus Potions reduced the cooldown of abilities. For example, after using the Confringo spell, there would be a cooldown period before it could be used again.
However, in this universe, spells had no cooldowns and worked differently. For instance, the Incendio spell in the game created a ring of fire around the caster, but here, it behaved more like a flamethrower.
Curious, Dudley decided to drink the Focus Potion to see its effect. He opened the lid and drank it, but after 10 seconds, he felt nothing.
"Is this potion worthless?" Dudley muttered.
He tried using a spell to confirm, but perhaps because his body had already opened all its pores, allowing magic to flow freely, he didn't notice any additional effects from the Focus Potion.
"What if I try drinking another Maxima Potion? Will it have any added effects?" Dudley mused.
"Alright," he said to himself and drank another Maxima Potion.
Once again, the surge of energy and magic enveloped his body. The power he had felt before returned, flowing through him. He cast several spells, but the effects were the same as before—no noticeable difference in the volume of magic or the potency of the spells.
"Maxima Potion alone is enough. There's no need for the Focus Potion," Dudley concluded.
He then sat down with his notebook and began documenting the effects of the potion.
Time passed—1 hour, 2 hours—but Dudley didn't notice until he finished writing down all his theories and formulas. He glanced at his watch and saw that 2 hours and 30 minutes had passed. Something clicked in his mind.
"Wait a minute. Why is my body still producing more magic? The effect should have expired," Dudley said in disbelief.
To confirm his suspicion, he cast another spell, and the power still felt like it was under the Maxima Potion's influence. He watched his watch, waiting, waiting, waiting until the effect finally wore off.
30 minutes later, the power diminished, and the effect was gone.
"So that means... the Focus Potion can make the effects of other potions last longer," Dudley realized, smiling.
This was a new discovery. If he used a Polyjuice Potion, it would likely last much longer. If 20 minutes could be extended to 180 minutes, the Polyjuice Potion might last up to 9 hours—and the best part was, no one else in this world had a Focus Potion.
---Back To Filch---
"This is the Maxima Potion. Are you absolutely sure you want to be the tester?" Dudley asked one last time.
"I'm sure, give it to me," Argus replied.
"Alright," Dudley said, handing the potion to Argus.
Hermione glanced at the potion. She had read about its effects in Dudley's research book and knew all about the Maxima Potion.
There were no side effects for wizards, but for a squib, this was the first test.
"Mr. Filch, are you really sure?" Hermione voiced her concern.
"I know it's just a test, but all my life, I've wanted to be a wizard," Argus said, his voice shaking, on the verge of tears.
