Chapter 158 - The Sacred Seclusion

Scene 1: Preparing the Sacred Space

On the 20th day of Ramadan, the early morning sun cast a gentle glow through Maryam's bedroom window. She had taken a ten-day leave from work, dedicating this period to observe I'tikaf, a spiritual retreat during the last ten days of Ramadan. Her heart brimmed with anticipation and devotion.

She began by thoroughly cleaning the room, ensuring every corner was spotless. The usual clutter was replaced with an atmosphere of serenity. In one corner, she laid out her prayer mat, placed the Quran on a small table beside it, and arranged a few Islamic books for reflection. This corner would serve as her sanctuary, a place for uninterrupted worship and contemplation.

After hours of preparation, Maryam sat on her bed, taking a moment to absorb the tranquility she had cultivated. The room now exuded a sense of peace, ready for the spiritual journey ahead.

Scene 2: Sharing the Decision

As Maryam rested, the door creaked open, and Ayesha stepped in, her face radiating warmth.

Ayesha: "Maryam, the house feels different today. Is there something special happening?"

Maryam looked up, a gentle smile gracing her lips.

Maryam: "Yes, Ayesha. I've decided to observe I'tikaf for the last ten days of Ramadan."

Ayesha's eyes sparkled with joy.

Ayesha: "That's wonderful news! May Allah bless you in this endeavor. Have you prepared everything you need?"

Maryam: "I believe so. I've set up a corner for prayer and gathered some books for reflection."

Their conversation was interrupted by the soft patter of footsteps. Khadija, Ayesha's young daughter, entered the room, clutching a small bouquet of freshly picked flowers.

Khadija: "Aunt Maryam, these are for you. Mama told me you're doing something very special."

Maryam's heart melted as she accepted the flowers, their delicate fragrance filling the room.

Maryam: "Thank you, Khadija. These are beautiful."

Khadija: "Mama said you're going to talk to Allah a lot. Can you ask Him to make me a good girl?"

Maryam chuckled, pulling Khadija into a gentle embrace.

Maryam: "Of course, sweetheart. I'll pray for you every day."

Scene 3: Learning the Intentions and Supplications

Later in the afternoon, as the sun began its descent, Ayesha sat beside Maryam, a look of contemplation on her face.

Ayesha: "Maryam, before you begin your I'tikaf, it's essential to make the proper niyyah (intention) and learn the supplications associated with it."

Maryam: "Yes, I want to ensure I do everything correctly."

Ayesha nodded, her tone becoming instructional.

Ayesha: "The intention is simple but profound. In your heart, you should resolve: 'I am performing ten days of Sunnah I'tikaf to please You, O Allah. Therefore, accept my I'tikaf and pardon all my sins.'"

Maryam closed her eyes, internalizing the intention, feeling its weight and sincerity.

Ayesha: "During I'tikaf, engage in various forms of worship: recite the Quran, perform Nafl (voluntary) prayers, and immerse yourself in Dhikr (remembrance of Allah). It's a time to disconnect from worldly distractions and focus solely on your relationship with Allah."

Maryam: "What if I need to attend to personal needs?"

Ayesha: "You're permitted to leave your designated space for necessities like using the bathroom or eating. However, avoid unnecessary interactions or distractions."

Maryam nodded, absorbing the guidance, her resolve strengthening.

Scene 4: Commencing the Spiritual Retreat

As the call for Asr prayer resonated through the air, signaling the late afternoon, Maryam felt a surge of anticipation. She performed her ablutions meticulously, each action a purification of both body and soul.

Draped in a modest, comfortable attire, she entered her prepared space, the ambiance serene and inviting. She stood on her prayer mat, raised her hands, and began her prayer, the verses flowing from her lips with heartfelt devotion.

With the completion of her prayer, Maryam sat quietly, the room enveloped in a profound silence. She felt a deep connection, a closeness to the Divine that she had yearned for.

The days ahead promised challenges and moments of introspection, but Maryam was ready. Her heart was open, her spirit willing, and her soul eager for the transformative journey of I'tikaf.
