The silence after the battle was deafening, the echoes of magic and steel dissipating into the abyss of the Undercity. Karina wiped her blade clean on the edge of her cloak, her expression unreadable as she surveyed the wreckage around us.
"We can't let her get far," she said, her voice sharp with urgency. "If she regroups, she'll find another way to open that gate."
"She won't," I replied, kneeling before the dormant gate. My hand hovered over the obsidian surface, its energy faint but not entirely gone. "Not without this." I extracted the fragment of the gate's glyphs I had shattered earlier. Its faint hum confirmed my suspicion—it was a key, or at least part of one.
Karina glanced at it warily. "And what exactly do you plan to do with that? It's dangerous."
"Exactly," I said, tucking it away. "Dangerous for her if it's not in her hands."
She didn't argue, but her eyes lingered on the fragment, her concern evident.
