Greeting guests wasn't so fun as she thought it would be. Avery was exhausted from walking and her arms hurt.
"Are you OK?" Hannah asked her.
Avery smiled at her. She was the first daughter-in-law of this family, which was the least she could do. Who was she kidding? She was the only daughter-in-law in this family. Alexander was the only child, and so is she.
Ham ah smiled at her;
"I know you're tired Avery. You don't need to hide it from me."
"I'm-"
Hannah raised her hand to stop her.
" I clearly understand. Greeting people and smiling all night isn't fun. I get you. I also hate it."
Avery's eyes widened.
"You do?"
"Hm. Why do you think I don't throw parties? I don't want to go through this hell again. However, my nephew just got married. Of course, his wife has to be acknowledged."
Her words got stuck in her throat. She didn't know what to say.
" You don't need to say anything, girl. Just be yourself around me."
Avery gave her a genuine smile and nodded at Hannah.
"I'd be back." Hannah excused herself to greet a couple who just walked in.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't Avery. The wife of Alex." A high-pitched voice greeted her.
Avery furrowed her brows. She sized the Barbie-looking woman.
"Can I help you, Miss?"
"Tonita," she said, reaching out her hand for a handshake.
Avery raised her brows at her, refusing to shake her hand. Her intuition was telling her this woman was bad news.
Tonita pulled her hands away and gave an awkward laugh.
" You don't know me. Yet. But I do know you. Um, how do I put this? Oh yes. I was one of your husband's girlfriends."
"Ex-girlfriend, Miss Tonita. My husband's ex-girlfriend. He's married now."
Tonita clasps her hands together.
"I see. I'm the best supermodel in France."
"I know. I've heard of the whole called Tonita. It's good Alex didn't marry you. Look at you. You look like plastic. Oh my bad. You are plastic."
Tonita was fuming with rage. How dare she insult a supermodel like her?
" At least I am famous among men. Look at you, you look wretched. I, for once, am pursuing my dream. Not tied by a man who slept with multiple women."
Avery trembled all over. She made a mental note to confront Alex about his past.
A hand gripped her waist firmly but not firm enough to hurt her. She raised her head and locked eyes with the man; she was passed out.
Alex smiled at her. However, Avery rolled her eyes at him. He should have known Tonita would run her mouth.
Alex pecked her temple. A reassurance to his wife. He worked hard to convince her to give him a chance. He wasn't going to make some woman ruin it.
"Alex," Tonita said.
"Who invited you?" Alex asked furiously.
A shiver ran through her spine. But Tonita straightened her back and said;
" Your aunt, silly. Who else would invite me? If you've forgotten, I'm Frances Top supermodel. You helped me get to the top. Remember? I can't be grateful enough."
His stomach churned. He helped her so that she would stay away from him.
His eyes landed on Avery. He fucked up.
How was he going to explain?
"Babe. I can explain." His voice quivered.
"Shut up," Avery said under her breath. She freed herself from Alex's hand and stepped forward. Her hand landed on Tonita's cheeks.
" You should be ashamed of yourself. Not only did you sleep your way to the top. You're also a homewrecker. Alex pushed you to the top, wait till you taste the bottom soil again."
