[City of Magnolia]
"Learning magic is easier said than done," Yajima said. "I believe Makarov already mentioned how a mages magical affinity can affect the magics they can learn, correct?"
Ivan and Gildarts both nodded.
"Good, that saves us some time. I'll keep it simple by saying, when it comes to choosing magic, the process is far simpler than one might think. Learning magic is only as hard as you make it to be."
Yajima stood up from his seat "For example, one of my magics revolves around the manipulation of my body," Yajima lifted his hand up and it turned into a thin paper like structure before turning back "Flattening Magic allows me to manipulate my body and turn it into a structure similar to paper, a handy magic for traveling when you have the wind on your side." he chuckled at the statement
Ivan and Gildarts stared straight at him, not a hint of amusement, devouring all the knowledge he said.
Yajima sighed at the tough crowd, "The magic felt natural to me and so I learned very fast compared to other mages at my age."
"So, what you're saying is that your magic was easy for you to learn because you had a connection to it? How did you even discover that thought? You must be looking at dozens of magics, right? How did one magic stick out to you?"
Yajima's fingers ran across his chin as he smiled "Well that's where things get interesting, you see I did not really learn my magic from a book like most caster magics or gain it from an object like holder magic, instead I developed it naturally."
Ivan and Gildarts cocked their heads; confusion would be too light of a word to describe what they were feeling.
"I'm lost." Gildarts said
"Me too," Ivan hissed trying to understand what Yajima had said "Your magic just appeared after you awakened?"
Yajima laughed "Well I thought this would be a tad bit confusing, let me explain it. No, my magic did not just appear after I awakened my magical power. Instead, it was a week after I awakened when my magical power began to...change," Yajima paused smiling "I was never meant for combat related magics and I believe once I began to realize that then my magic changed, almost as if agreeing with me."
Ivan thought he understood, but asked his question nonetheless "So is this a common case or a rare one, to have your magic just appear? I haven't heard about it from gramps."
"Well yes and no. It is quite common to have a magic pick you like my own did, most mages when they awaken their magical power find out their magic almost instantly, usually in a burst of fire or shock of lighting. My own case was rather unique but not unheard of, the same is for you two. While it might take some time for, your magics to appear, that doesn't mean we can speed up the process or even steer it in a certain direction."
Gildarts cocked his head "So you're saying I could just awaken my own magic right now? In a big flash of power?"
"Well, there is a chance, but it's highly unlikely since you haven't already, it may take some time for you both. Or you just might need to realize what magical affinity is the best for you."
Gildarts smiled "Well I already know my magic is going to be offensive magic."
Ivan sighed "Of course."
Yajima chuckled "I wouldn't put it past you Gildarts, I can see you becoming quite the mage."
'You have no idea...' Ivan thought
Though he was still confused by the entire magic system Ivan did have an idea of what Yajima was talking about, that and his own magic. Though he still wanted some more confirmation, reassurance if nothing else.
"Still Yajima, it's all a bit confusing. Weird how magic seemed to just choose you and not the other way around.
"Well, I'm giving far too much credit to the magic, while magic isn't alive in the way we are, it has a... sense of sorts. Honestly though what I'm telling you is just how it feels when you're attempting a magic you have no talent for, it seems to just rebels against you."
Gildarts spoke next "So to learn magic we just have to find a magic that we have an interest in? Seems pretty easy, no?"
Yajima nodded "Indeed, if you have even a faint idea of what magic you can see yourself utilizing, you may have found your magic. You both should think about it for a moment."
Ivan contemplated Yajima's words and his own ideas, he had thought of one magic he could see himself using. It was a little odd and many people might be against him for seeing himself using such a magic, he hoped the council wasn't too hard on certain magical restrictions, well besides lost magics.
"Yajima, I think I have an idea." Ivan said his tone calm and stern
Yajima looked at him with surprise "Already? Makarov said you were still contemplating some options, you don't need to rush Ivan, take your time if you must."
"No don't worry, it's been in the back of mind for a while know, I just never really gave it some thought, but now I think I've made my decision."
Yajima listened intently, so did Gildarts curious to see what magic his friend had in mind.
Ivan took in a deep breath in and then spoke "Darkness magic."
