Officer Dalton returned with two cups of hot cocoa and handed one to Scott, who took it with both hands and blew on it before taking a sip.
The old cop settled onto the bench beside him, his tired eyes studying the young man's face. Scott looked pretty harmless right now… just a cold, shivering kid wrapped in a blanket, clutching hot cocoa like it was the last warm thing in the world.
Dalton sighed.
"Alright, kid. I'll be honest with you."
He took a sip of his own cocoa.
"I really want to know what a guy like you could possibly do to make five… no, six girlfriends want you dead at the bottom of a frozen river."
Scott took another sip of his cocoa.
He smiled.
"It's not what you think, Officer. But let me finish first, hm? How 'bout that?"
Dalton sighed again, deeper this time.
"Fine. Go on, then."
Scott's smile widened.
"Okay, so where was I?"
