Chapter 344 - Chapter 342: Successfully Passing the Inspection

The morning sun appeared in the sky, its golden light piercing through the thin veil of white clouds, scattering a warm radiance across the entire village.

Aoki and Kurisu then walked away from the main gate, their footsteps blending seamlessly with the rhythm of life that had just begun to stir in the freshness of that early morning.

The entrance path to the village felt alive, brimming with the colors of daily activity—noisy yet oddly soothing, like a familiar melody of ordinary peace.

Children ran about carrying simple wooden toys, the small wheels clattering against the dusty ground, while their laughter rang in the air like the clear chiming of tiny bells.

One or two of them nearly collided with Aoki's legs, but quickly stopped, bowing their heads in apology with innocent faces before darting off again—returning to a world that seemed to contain nothing but carefree games and endless joy.

Women were busy bargaining at the marketplace, their voices overlapping in high and low tones, vibrant with energy and shrewdness.

Vegetable sellers spread out their goods upon wide cloths laid across the ground, rows of fresh produce lining up in vivid greens, reds, and yellows, still glistening with dew as if they had just been picked from the fields at dawn.

Patrolling shinobi passed by with even, measured steps. Although their demeanor was far more relaxed compared to the days of war, there was still a subtle aura of vigilance accompanying every movement.

Their sharp eyes swept over the crowd from time to time, ensuring that no hidden threats lurked beneath the surface of this peaceful scene.

The aroma of food drifted from the nearby ramen stalls and fish grills, wrapping the air with an inviting warmth.

Steam rose from pots of simmering broth behind the curtains of small eateries, blending with the savory scent of soy sauce cooking with tender slices of meat—making the atmosphere of the village feel even more intimate, homely, and safe.

Aoki's stomach stirred for a moment, not from hunger, but from the nervous tension that still rattled inside his chest.

Though his outward steps appeared calm, deep within Aoki felt an anxiety that was nearly impossible to hide. Kurisu's touch upon his arm lingered distinctly—warm, soft, and gentle—at once a comfort and a weight pressing down on him.

That touch made his nerves spike higher, his heartbeat thudding louder and faster than usual, almost as if his body itself wished to betray the secret he had worked so hard to keep hidden.

They were, after all, pretending to be a married couple. Yet that very act made every small gesture suddenly difficult to control.

The glances of passing villagers, the friendly smiles of merchants, even the curious gaze of a child who noticed them walking arm-in-arm—all of it seemed to pile invisible pressure upon Aoki's shoulders.

"I have to endure this… I cannot let my guard down. All of this is for the mission," Aoki murmured within his heart, his lips almost moving though no sound escaped.

He swallowed hard, attempting to disguise his unease by drawing a deep breath, but the feeling refused to leave, pressing insistently from within his chest.

Kurisu, on the other hand, moved with much more ease. Her steps were light, as though she were simply enjoying the bright morning, unburdened by anything heavy.

Her gaze wandered curiously across the village, as if she were truly a young wife discovering her husband's hometown for the first time.

Her eyes occasionally lingered on handicrafts hanging outside a shop, on the face of a fruit vendor busy serving customers, or on a stray cat leaping gracefully between rooftops.

A gentle smile continually adorned Kurisu's lips—a soft, natural smile that seemed genuine to all who saw it. Yet behind that expression lay her own quiet vigilance.

Kurisu hid her tension well, but she was fully aware of the danger should their disguise ever be exposed.

Her ears seemed always alert, attuned to every sound, ready to catch the slightest noise that did not belong to the lively market chatter.

By clutching Aoki's arm more tightly, Kurisu sought to show everyone around them that they were indeed a pair bound by love and affection.
