Chapter 1
The world was dark when Kiran awoke. Not the comforting dark of the night sky, where stars blinked like distant guides, but the oppressive blackness of an empty cave, devoid of light and warmth. His body ached from the brutal ritual, the once vibrant flow of spiritual energy now reduced to nothing but a faint memory.
He was broken. Crippled.
Yet, there was no pain in his heart. Only a vast, cold emptiness.
Kiran lay motionless, his body half-buried in dirt and blood, the sound of his labored breathing echoing off the stone walls around him. The sect had discarded him like garbage, but it was their betrayal, not his shattered body, that gnawed at his mind. The faces of those who had called him "brother," "friend," and even "genius" danced before his closed eyes. Their smiles were knives, and their praise, poisoned honey.
He clenched his fist, fingers trembling as they dug into the dirt. No more.
Just as despair began to claw at him, a sudden chill swept through his chest, like a drop of ice melting into his soul. Then, a voice—cold and emotionless—spoke within his mind.
"Welcome, Host. System initialization complete. Quest line: Revenge—Activated."
Kiran's eyes snapped open. For a moment, he thought the pain had driven him mad. But the voice, detached yet clear, echoed again.
"Current status: Cultivation base—Crippled. Dantian—Shattered. Spiritual roots—Destroyed."
Each word was like a knife twisting in his chest, confirming the truth he already knew. But alongside that truth came something else.
Hope.
He sat up slowly, grimacing at the sharp pains shooting through his limbs. His body was weak, but his mind, now, was anything but. The System—whatever it was—felt like a lifeline thrown into a sea of endless darkness.
"What are you?" Kiran's voice was hoarse, barely a whisper, but the System responded without hesitation.
"I am your means to ascend once more. Through me, you will reclaim your strength and surpass even those who betrayed you. First Quest: Survive."
Kiran blinked. Survive? He glanced around the cave, his weakened state now painfully clear. The cold bit into his skin, and his limbs shook from exhaustion. His former power, the spiritual energy that once surged through his veins like a river, was gone. He was as vulnerable as a commoner now—maybe even worse.
But that didn't matter. If the System could restore him, if it could give him a path back to power, nothing else mattered.
"How?" he rasped.
"Find a source of Qi. Absorb it to begin rebuilding your foundation. Completion reward: Recovery of Qi at Stage 1."
Kiran inhaled sharply. Rebuilding from the ground up? It was humiliating, but… it was a start. And he had nothing left to lose. The sect had taken everything—his cultivation, his dignity, his very identity. But they had failed to take his will. That remained, burning like the last ember of a dying flame.
Forcing himself to his feet, Kiran stumbled, his legs shaking as if they no longer remembered how to support him. Every step was agony, but he gritted his teeth and pressed on. He would survive. He had to. His vengeance demanded it.
The cave was silent, save for the sound of his ragged breathing and the faint drip of water from some unseen source. The air was thick with a faint trace of Qi, barely perceptible, but enough to set his heart racing. If he could just reach it…
Kiran followed the sensation deeper into the cave, his hands brushing against the cold stone walls for balance. His vision blurred, but the pulsing presence of Qi grew stronger with every step. It was faint, but it was there. A trickle where once there had been an ocean, but enough to begin the long climb back from the abyss.
He dropped to his knees beside a small pool of water, where a single cracked spirit stone lay half-buried in the mud. The stone was almost drained of energy, its faint glow flickering like a dying ember, but it would have to be enough.
Reaching out with trembling fingers, Kiran grasped the stone, its cold surface pressing into his palm. He closed his eyes and concentrated, feeling for the faint pulse of energy within the stone. It was weak—so weak—but he could still draw it out.
The moment the Qi entered his body, his muscles tensed, the sudden rush of energy both foreign and familiar. He gritted his teeth, willing the Qi to flow through him, though his pathways were damaged and nearly useless. It burned, searing its way through his crippled dantian, but it was a fire he welcomed.
"Absorb… focus…" he muttered to himself, forcing the Qi to circulate, to fill the void where his once mighty cultivation had been. It hurt. Gods, it hurt. But the pain was proof that he was still alive.
After what felt like an eternity, the stone crumbled to dust in his hand, its energy drained completely. Kiran collapsed, gasping for breath, but the tiniest spark of Qi now resided within him. It wasn't much—just a whisper of what he had once possessed—but it was enough.
The System spoke again.
"Quest completed. Qi recovered. New quest: Rebuild your foundation. Reward: Progress to Qi Refinement Stage 1."
Kiran stared at the dust in his hand, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He wasn't dead yet.
No. This was just the beginning.
And when he returned, the sect that betrayed him would know what true terror was.
