Peter spent five or six weeks in prison, and throughout the entire process, no one talked to him about anything other than the case. I reckon Elizabeth, Jones, and Diana might visit Peter, but absolutely nobody knew about Hughes' arrangements. Jimmy never discussed his work with anyone else, only Neil Cavrey knew that Jimmy finally made a deal with the federal prosecutor.
So theoretically, it was Neil who told Peter that Jimmy made a deal with the prosecutor, and then Peter inferred that Jimmy did something, which led to him asking Jimmy out for a beer.
Peter has been out of prison for a few days now, and hasn't contacted Hughes, not knowing what he's thinking. Before, Hughes was implicated and retired because of what he did, and he hasn't contacted Hughes since being released.
