Chapter 3 - Hello World!

Goals aren't doors you kick open; they're rooms you learn to breathe in. You don't arrive at them so much as practice standing there until the space stops pushing you out. In the dark, with nothing but warmth and rhythm to measure myself against, a goal isn't a finish line. It's a promise. It's a necessity that pushes you forward into doing something productive. Without a goal, I might have gone insane or indulged in the sweet bliss of memories that would make assimilating into a new world all the harder.

I hold onto that promise of strength and work.

The warmth—chakra—moves the way it always has, with the quiet insistence of a tide. When I lean my attention into it, it always answers, not woabbly anymore but like water flowing along the gradient. My body knows the choreography now: the pretend breaths, the slow flex of a chest not built for air yet, the gentle turns, the careful glides. I keep the routes small and repeatable—chest, belly, along the back, back to chest—because small and repeatable wins when waste is the enemy. The multiplier was still small. I would rather send a little to the right place than spill a lot into nothing and have no progress. I had a goal.

I call the status window with a shaped will rather than a word. It obliges, indifferent as ever.

'Numbers don't care if I'm proud of what I've accomplished,' I think. 'But it keeps me honest.'

Time has no edges here. I measure by how the warmth listens.

I notice the steady supply that rides the cord into me. It is not mine, and it never was, but the body knows what to do with it. If I try to pull, nothing improves. If I receive and fold it into what I'm already guiding, more of the small effective portion does what I ask. Time loses meaning in here, or rather, my determination not to waste anything had built a pattern. It was so unlike me; I was never this focused in my past life. Just drifting along, putting forth the bare minimum that I needed to succeed.

'Then again, I knew no matter what happens, my parents would have my back. I knew I was never going to starve. I might not excel, but even with the worst-case scenario, I had a foundation to catch my fall. Now, in a world as dangerous as the Elemental nations, I don't think so.' I think. It's not the first time I have debated whether I should work as hard once I had gained the initial acceptance of where I was.

It was not fear that forced me to move, but a curiosity mixed with excitement. Maybe this is all a weird dream, a long-ass dream, but the possibility of running faster than a car while throwing around fireballs out of my ass had a certain appeal that mundane coding work never had. Sure, I could improve the compression algorithm if I tried hard my whole life, but can it compare to walking around in armor covered with lightning?

So knowing the importance of chakra mapping, the network within me becomes a goal I can work at even if I can't see it yet. I stop demanding a perfect diagram and start tracing by feel—the way you learn a key by touch rather than sight. Along my arms and legs, there are places where the warmth always seems to gather for a heartbeat longer on its way through, a ring of subtle points that repeat along my whole body. Along the torso and spine, there are lanes that feel fuller, wider, like well-worn corridors compared to side halls. The words for these things—coils, tenketsu—were poured into me the day the text first spoke; now the shapes begin to match the names.

'The more I force chakra down a specific coil, the better my perception of it becomes.' That thought became a side goal in which I poured my heart and soul.

I tried to open my eyes at some point when I was feeling a little exhausted from focusing and waiting for the next tide of chakra to come. The lids peel apart for the first time, surprising me. I am greeted by a whole lot of nothing for my effort: a brown-red thickness, moving blur, no edges to bite into. 'Right,' I tell myself. 'Eyes open, nothing to see. Noted.' I close them again and go back to looking at what works.

...

The work continues, measured and without applause. I test the pane after what feels like weeks because repetition is a form of faith.

...

No confetti. No new rules. Nothing exciting is popping up. I could not even tell the difference between 0.6 and 0.7 in Physique. The number felt a little meaningless for now. At least I had a lot more luck in mapping the pathways. I'm quite familiar with the highway of my chakra coils by now. It is the primary part of the pathway that connects my newborn brain to my chakra core to my heart. There was no such concept of chakra core, but whatever small amount of chakra that I have of my own, it is stored there. I have yet to try to move that part of my reserve because frankly, with the 4% multiplier, I probably won't even have a chance to do anything.

After one of these steady laps that takes as long as it takes, a thin line of meaning brightens at the edge of attention and goes again, like a nod from a teacher who doesn't like to interrupt. My perception sharpens as, with a focused intent, I pull forth my skill list to notice the change.

[Chakra Control — Lv 3 Effectiveness Multiplier: 6%]

'Okay,' I think, letting the satisfaction stay small so it doesn't spill into a mess. 'We take those.' The celebration lasted for a few moments as I dived deep into my own senses to see what had changed. The highway is a lot clearer now, but it still lacks any defined edges. I still can't sense any tenketsu, so no luck there. Other than the slight ease in the resistance, I felt nothing much had changed.

Outside, my chamber maintains its routines. Footsteps. Cloth. A door's hiss and hush. Japanese in strands that I stop even pretending to separate. I keep my eyes sealed and my attention unsealed, focusing my concentration on the massive influx of chakra through the walls to assimilate it into me. I have two sources of outside chakra. One source comes to me in waves through the cord that tethers me. The other source comes once a day, though I'm not entirely sure about that. However, the quantity and quality of the second infusion are always significantly better.

...

With focus, I refine how I guide. If I picture my attention as a slope rather than a lever, the warmth follows more willingly. I can now try to place it in four places at once—the back of my neck, my chest, both hands, and my focus shifts. I have taught myself to hold one path steady while also preparing the next, then trade them without losing focus. It feels like learning to pass a weight from one palm to the other without dropping it. I have found the basic pathways to my arms and legs. They are a lot blurrier compared to the highway, but it's progress, and I have begun to accept what little I can get.

I check again because I am the kind of person who checks a stove twice before leaving.

'Hmm, my body does feel a bit stronger, though not by much, still I now have full control over my arms and legs. Not the fingers, though, as they feel like a solid block.' I attested.

Interestingly enough, with time, the ring of points, also called tenketsu, along my limbs is no longer a rumor. It lives under my attention the way a row of buttons lives under cloth—you can't see them, but your fingertips find them, neat and regular, every time you pass, they pulse slightly. The lanes through my torso are thicker than any side path, yet their chakra points remain vague, outside of my senses, and the places where the flow slows feel like shallow bowls under a faucet, more out of reach than ever before. 'It's because of the eight gates, isn't it. They should primarily reside within this line, so there should be hidden safeguards to not mess with them so easily.'

Not that I have tried to mess with any of the points along my limbs, while mapping is an observation I'm comfortable with, trying to push any chakra through a tenketsu outside my body just seems like trouble. I'll wait for that when I'm not in prison.

...

Another lap, and another day finished with the big infusion, and the pane taps me again with its dry politeness. I have made it a routine to check the gains over the past month or so, calculating a day as the time between the big infusion. Important information first, I got another level up. Chakra control has gone up once more, marking another milestone and an increase in effectiveness. Practically, I have 'vision' over the network of my limbs now. My hands have a lot more distinct pathways than my legs.

'Must be because of the handseals, or maybe handseals are tied around jutsu because there are so many chakra points in our hands.' The answer to my questions would have to wait until I have my hands on some proper literature.

'And learn to read, write, and speak Japanese.' I groaned, which my new mother duly noted, and I got firm pats along the wall as acknowledgment. Hey, I have vocal cords, apparently, now. At least I have some control over them, considering I can groan.

[Chakra Control — Lv 4 ... Effectiveness Multiplier: 8%]

Eight percent is still small. It is also twice of four, which is twice of two. The multiplier doesn't feel larger, yet to me, the chakra felt so much more obedient, as if my suggestions were being heard slightly more consistently.

I have now learned to "rest" the warmth in a specific region without locking anything or forcing anything. Resting as a natural pause, like setting a cup on a table while you open a door. I can let it sit behind the sternum, at the small of the back, along the forearm, and then ask it to move again without the motion getting sloppy. Would it ever be helpful? I don't know. Did I try to master this new thing I found? Absolutely.

The ring of points along my arms and legs is fixed now as I have painted them to memory. In the way a path becomes fixed when you've walked it enough times that your feet find it even in the dark. I can trace a whole-body loop and know where the gathering will happen before it happens. The lanes are still lanes, not lines, as my sense isn't accurate enough, maybe it never will be, as only someone with a Byakugan would ever be able to see the clear map of the network, and I know better than to pretend I have precision I don't.

I have also deduced how the chakra is 'wasted'. Whenever an infusion-tide comes, I guide it along my pathways. At first, it is a wave rushing from the sea, where it interacts with my core. Then, when I force it to follow along, it keeps colliding with the walls along the way and is absorbed by my body. So maybe I'm not wasting it per se, as it clearly works with improving my body along the way, the waste is directed in a way that I can not figure out my own pathways due to its help. So progressing past my limbs has become harder, as by the time I end my first cycle, the energy is now gone.

...

...

The pane appears without me calling it, as if checking on a student during a quiet test.

[Chakra Control — Lv 5 Effectiveness Multiplier: 10%]

Ten percent sounds like a lot until I remember the other ninety. Math not in my favour, I move on to the good stuff, like not having less than one in stats.

[Chakra: 12.5]

'Except for vision, as it still remains shit,' I remind myself when the 0.7 stares back. 'Not that I'm going to test my nourishment theory by forcing chakra to my eyes. No, thank you, I'll remain a pleb. Your attitude is a lens. Keep it clean, or everything warps.' I learned that in a different life from a YouTube therapist; it serves me here better than it did in a dorm.

The practice shifts into something mundane. I don't try to add new tricks; rather, I focus on refining just my understanding of the chakra network along my hands. I make the handoffs smoother, ignoring my legs for now. Would that mean I would be slower? I don't think so. Or at least it is a gamble that I have decided to take. I know that the status screen feels underwhelming, but staring at it every day has made me aware of a possibility. There is no strength, speed, or agility stat. That means that Physique governs everything. I don't know if it would work, but it's an experiment worth taking.

...

How long has it been? How long till I go on? The pane taps my attention again, polite and almost affectionate.

[Chakra Control — Lv 6 Effectiveness Multiplier: 12%]

I don't gloat. I don't pretend it makes me feel better, yet it does. It makes me think more clearly. My outlook matters more, and I've learned to prefer it to be positive.

Outside, nothing important changes, and everything is edging toward it. The sounds have been as muffled as they've ever been, so my hearing is not the issue. The warmth from the wall comes in sequences that feel like checklists that they go through, and I'm grateful for that. The pressure that used to be rehearsal begins to feel like the first lines of a script.

I test the pane because the feeling in my bones says read.

The question mark after my name is gone. It means nothing yet everything. Maybe my name was undecided before, yet something has been cleared, and my parents have decided on it. Physique, Reflex, Coordination: all at 2.0. Vision: 0.9, and staying there, stubborn as always. The pool of chakra around me was fuller and charged with energy as I felt the change happen. The numbers aren't omens, but they're signs. Their wholeness wasn't a coincidence. 'Today,' I think, 'the signs agree.'

...

The environment turns. The change is sudden in the way weather is sudden: you smell it before you feel it; you feel it before you see it. The sounds emerged, and loud shouts across the other side of the wall. Fabric rushes. Equipment ticks. Palms press and hold. A sudden pressure was applied from all around me as I was squeezed. Pain wasn't a thing that I had felt in this new life yet, but the pressure made me uncomfortable, and a rush of chakra enveloped me through the walls.

It would be easy to let panic well up from where it sleeps. Panic is contagious. It is a power that feeds on my own emotions. 'Focus on the chakra,' I tell myself. 'It is an opportunity as well.' I choose to focus on the chakra as an escape: slowly, calmly.

With the rush of new energy, I route chakra into the places that haven't been touched before due to a lack of energy. Along the back of my soles, the arch of my knees. Behind the sternum, so the pretend breath is ready to become real breath when it matters. The cord-fed supply of chakra thickens as the physical pressure increases. I receive it and fold it into what I'm already doing.

The wall squeezes me along as I focus on the chakra. I feel myself pushed forward. It's a difficult process as the wall clamps on my face; if I needed to breathe through my nose/mouth, I would not survive it. I fit it. It was a sudden shift. A push. A relaxation of the muscle before I shifted.

Cold.

It was breathtakingly cold as I felt a cold breeze on my scalp, and I leaned over the edge. Cold hits wet skin. Sound is no longer inside a wall; it's above me, around me, sharp even through muffling. The cord's tug eases. Space opens as I feel the compressing shift around my body before I'm free. The room is a new kind of bright I can't see and a new kind of loud I can't parse.

Something precise and practiced touches the center of my chest and the line of my throat. The warmth is different from the warmth I know—tighter, steadier, carrying a shape like a tool and one that I can not control or touch. Medical chakra, I guess, without language to name it. It pulses once, clean and exact with unavailing control, and the fluid in my lungs obeys something older than fear. It leaves, swiftly, and air takes its place, thin and biting and impossible and correct.

I cough—a small, ridiculous sound that feels like a thunderstorm inside a matchbox. The first breath is a scrape and a triumph, but also frightfully cold. I would complain if I knew how, but the body chooses a different celebration: crying. I cry because my throat is sore, and because the room is cold. The urge to continue to complain was suppressed by the warmth of the precise chakra warming up the scraped walls

I open my eyes because that is what you do when the world is supposed to be seen. My Vision stat sits at 0.9 and behaves like it: all I could perceive are blobs; shapes and sizes with no edge to bite on, only gray-white canvas with blotches of color that are a jumbled mess screaming without doing me the courtesy of being a picture.

'Well, I guess that was to be expected.'

Hands lift me—careful, professional, not gentle for the sake of being gentle, but careful because care is how you keep things from breaking. The air pulls heat off me with greedy hands. Someone says something in Japanese close enough that the syllables would mean something if my ears weren't shocked and my brain wasn't choosing survival over translation. Not that I could translate, another aspect of a bigger problem that I would deal with later.

"Shinpaku wa antei shite imasu. Kokyū wa arimasu." An older voice replied, his tone rugged and quite close to me, likely belonging to the giant hands holding me. "Mondaiarimasen… tadashi, gappeishō wa mada nokotte imasu. Nen'notame keika kansatsu sa sete itadakimasu." He continued, his words little more than gibberish to me.

"Nen'notame, mōichido medikaruchakura de arainagashite kudasai. Hai wa… wa i, kirei ni narimashita." A gentler voice replied, a little ways away from me. I squit and wanted to move. 2 stat points or not in Physique, my neck muscles weren't responding right now. I was flooded with chakra. My habit forced me to try to take control of it, but the result was the same; it was too focused for me to do anything about. "Kazoku ni wa atode setsumei shimasu." The words lose their meaning as I don't understand them.

Focusing instead on the pane as it comes on its own, the way it has in the moments that matter most. It doesn't bother with preamble; my focus on taking advantage of the chakra flood has been a success. I improved once more, yet another daunting task is now there before me. The tide of chakra that was continuously feeding me before is gone, the connection severed. My heart beat quickens as it searches for a response that never arrives. My senses focus on the meager core that floats over my abdomen. It contains just enough chakra to remind me that it's there.

...

[Chakra Control — Lv 7 — You can direct and control chakra in simple ways.]

[Effectiveness Multiplier: 14% - Directed flow is markedly steadier under sustained strain; improved ability to hold and re-route chakra.]

...

The hands that hold me shift. A new warmth replaces the room's bite. Cloth. Soft. A sense of touch.

My vision is still foggy with opinions. My hearing is fine yet useless. My mind is still the same lens it was an hour ago, only aimed at a world that has decided I exist on the other side of the wall. Breathing is comforting, a touch that I didn't know I was missing. It is a signal. I'm alive.

Someone near my head says something in Japanese with a tone even I can read: tired and satisfied. The reply is a softer cadence that sounds like permission. The word hangs for an extra heartbeat in the air.

I hold very still and let the people do what they are meant to do. I don't reach for the status window. I don't need to. The numbers will be there when I ask them. For now, the numbers are less real than the slow pressure of air in, of air out, the bright light shining around somewhere.

I hadn't managed to achieve my goal of mapping out my own chakra pathways, yet it wasn't a failure that held me down. I felt positive for the moment.

'Well, step one done... now what?'

---

AN: For those wondering what was said, I'll provide the translation here.

"Heartbeat is stable. Breathing is stable."

"No problems… however, the complication is still there. We'll monitor as a precaution."

"Flush Medical chakra once more, just in case. The lungs… yes, it's cleared."

"We'll explain to the family later."

Anyway. Birth done, introductions to the family and first few months covered in the next chapter. I won't rush through the timeline, I'll be honest, as I'll be focusing on the worldbuilding for this novel quite a bit. If anybody is interested in posting a better translation of the words, I would change them. The Japanese English dilemma won't be highlighted a lot, I just wanted to take note of it as a challenge that the MC has to adapt to as well.
