Chapter 415 - Chapter 414: A Stunning Visual Spectacle

The fight eventually ended with Captain Jack being knocked out by Mr. Brown with a bottle and then thrown into jail. Just like that, Captain Jack's comeback plan failed.

Many moviegoers suddenly realized that although Captain Jack seemed a bit effeminate, liked to strut like a catwalk model, moved with a flamboyant grace, and wore smoky eyeliner, he still appeared far more charismatic than Orlando Bloom's portrayal of the blacksmith Will Turner.

It's hard to describe exactly what this charm was, but in short, Captain Jack just felt seductive and carefree.

At night, while Captain Jack was staring blankly in his cell, the sound of cannons suddenly thundered the docks were under attack by a pirate ship.

Through the iron bars, Captain Jack immediately recognized it as the legendary Black Pearl. It had once been his ship, but the crew had mutinied and kicked him off.

And leading that mutiny was none other than Barbossa, Jack's first mate.

The scene of the pirate ship attacking the docks vividly showcased the seafaring style of the 16th and 17th centuries. It was quite thrilling to watch.

However, Noel gave an honest review: "If the film is just like this, I can only say it's a decent pirate movie, but it doesn't meet my expectations."

"Could that be?" Hutchinson was doubtful. "I watched the trailer, and it seemed to have some fantasy elements."

The movie continued. The pirates stormed ashore and headed for the governor's mansion. Inside, Elizabeth fought back desperately, but she was no match for the ruthless pirates.

In desperation, Elizabeth invoked the Pirate Code.

Scarlett was very curious and, acting like a living encyclopedia, asked Gilbert, "What is the Pirate Code?"

Gilbert tilted his head and thought for a moment. "You can think of it as a kind of unwritten agreement among pirates. All pirates must follow it, or they'll be despised and hunted down by the others."

"Oh!" Scarlett suddenly understood. "So pirates have laws too? I thought they lived completely free and lawless lives!"

Gilbert smiled. "Scarlett, you should know—absolute freedom equals absolute lack of freedom. There can't be order without rules."

Cameron Diaz, sitting nearby, nodded in agreement. "Since when did you become a philosopher and legal expert?"

"Just now…"

After Elizabeth invoked the Code, the pirates took her aboard the Black Pearl. Geoffrey Rush's Captain Barbossa made his grand entrance accompanied by a monkey.

Elizabeth, unnerved by the pirates' bizarre outfits, panicked. She lied that she was a maid named Turner from the governor's household, hoping to avoid trouble.

But after she handed over a pirate medallion, Barbossa didn't let her go instead, he kept her on the ship.

This was where Geoffrey Rush's performance truly shone. His facial expressions, paired with his body language, made Barbossa irresistibly charismatic, even though he wasn't conventionally attractive.

"I heard that in the original script, Barbossa was supposed to be the main villain and die in the end.

But Geoffrey Rush's performance was so exceptional that they decided to keep him alive," one fan commented.

Another fan nearby was curious. "Where did you hear that?"

"It was leaked on a forum supposedly by someone who attended an early screening," the fan explained.

Well then, someone couldn't resist spoiling things and even added a few fabricated details. Still, Captain Barbossa's performance was so captivating that it would've been a shame to kill him off.

The day after the pirate raid on the port, Will Turner learned that Elizabeth had been taken by pirates. He freed Captain Jack and joined forces with him to rescue her.

But Jack had his own agenda: reclaiming the Black Pearl.

To do that and save Elizabeth they first needed a ship. So their top priority was to get one.

This led to an extremely funny scene. Noel, a liberal arts major, asked Hutchinson, "Is it really possible to walk underwater using an overturned rowboat like that?"

Hutchinson replied, "I'm a science major…"

"I know you're a science major. That's why I'm asking does that work?"

"Not sure. You'd have to experiment to find out."

Though the physics stumped them both, the scene was hilarious. It added a playful tone to the film and had the entire theater laughing.

What came next was even funnier. Captain Jack and Will Turner initially planned to steal the Dauntless, but were spotted by Commodore Norrington.

Commodore Norrington led all his men aboard the Dauntless to capture Jack and Will only for Jack and Will to pull a fast one and steal the Interceptor instead, supposedly the fastest ship in the Caribbean.

This scene had the audience grinning from ear to ear. Some couldn't help but suspect that Gilbert had a bone to pick with the British Royal Navy how could someone like Norrington become a commodore?

While on the ship, Captain Jack told Will Turner a shocking truth: though Will hated pirates, he was actually the son of one.

His father was named Bill Turner, nicknamed "Bootstrap Bill," a seasoned pirate.

At this point, some sharp-eyed viewers noticed that Elizabeth had claimed the name Turner earlier. Could that be why Barbossa took her?

Naturally, Will Turner denied being a pirate's son, and Captain Jack gave him a good talking-to for it.

The two of them sailed to the pirate city of Tortuga, where they found their old friend Gibbs to join the crew, and also recruited a group of desperate men to serve as sailors.

Meanwhile, aboard the Black Pearl, Barbossa was dining with Elizabeth and telling her about the significance of the gold coins.

It was at this point that the fantasy aspect of the film finally began to unfold.

It turned out that the coins were called Aztec gold, originating from the Aztec Empire in the Americas. There were 882 coins in total, all cursed.

Barbossa and his crew hadn't believed in the curse, spent the coins recklessly, and were indeed cursed turned into the undead.

Only by retrieving all the coins and performing a blood sacrifice with Elizabeth could the curse be lifted.

Elizabeth didn't believe in such nonsense, secretly hid a dinner knife, and then stabbed Barbossa in the chest. Barbossa, unsurprisingly, pulled out the knife like nothing had happened.

Terrified, Elizabeth fled the cabin, only to discover that the crew she had seen in daylight had all turned into skeletons.

If that were all, it wouldn't have been so bad, but the key was that these skeletons could move. They looked utterly terrifying.

Scarlett was so frightened that she jumped into Gilbert's arms, covering her eyes with her hands, though her curiosity got the better of her and she peeked through her fingers.

Avril Lavigne, sitting in the guest seats, was also startled and shrank back. She looked around, saw that no one had noticed her and that everyone's attention was on the screen, so she felt relieved.

"I'm a rock girl, I'm not afraid of anything..."

Avril Lavigne suppressed her fear, widened her eyes, and didn't miss a single frame to prove she was indeed brave.

A few of Gilbert's old fans in the back row were in tears: "Can I cry? It's been ten years, ten years, and I've finally recaptured the feeling I had watching Gilbert's early movies."

"Yeah, after all these years, who would've guessed that Gilbert actually started out making horror films."

"Boohoo, it's scary, but I feel like crying…"

And honestly, although Pirates of the Caribbean had a PG-13 rating, this scene was truly frightening. If you were watching it for the first time unprepared, it could really scare you.

The credit went to Orange Studio's excellent special effects that made the skeletons look vividly lifelike.

Keira Knightley found it magical performing in front of green screens and some props felt silly, yet the final result was so incredible.

For someone with little film experience, this was a fascinating experience.

In the previous life, this film was Disney's first PG-13 movie. Scenes like this were absolutely not allowed in Disney films.

But back then, Disney made a bold decision and that decision led to the glory of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

It was thanks to this film that Disney's live-action division quickly took off.

Of course, the current situation was quite different. Because of Gilbert, Disney had already invested in many films that didn't align with its traditional image.

So when Pirates of the Caribbean featured such terrifying visuals, no one was really surprised anymore.

And besides, if Disney didn't want to invest, there was always Warner Bros. The movie market never cared about values or ideals only commercial gain.

Elizabeth was utterly terrified. She found that even the cute and slightly mischievous monkey from the day had turned into a skeleton, incredibly frightening.

Then came a truly stunning scene: Elizabeth fled back to the cabin, only to run straight into Captain Barbossa's arms. Since he wasn't under the moonlight, Barbossa hadn't turned into a skeleton yet.

But as Elizabeth backed away step by step, and Barbossa approached step by step, the curse took effect under the moonlight.

From his arm to his entire body, Captain Barbossa demonstrated to the audience how the curse worked and the process of turning into a skeleton.

Even after being exposed to many visual blockbusters, the audience in the theater was still deeply shocked by this scene.

Some say Gilbert is a master storyteller, but in Noel's opinion, Gilbert is also a master of technical execution.

Such visual spectacles are rare even in other directors' films absolutely astonishing.

But thinking about it, it made sense. The investment scale of Pirates of the Caribbean wasn't something just any director could handle.

Disney and Warner Bros. invested hundreds of millions simply because they trusted Gilbert's original pirate story.

There are only a handful of directors in Hollywood with the same standing as Gilbert.

The visual spectacle was stunning, but the story continued.

Captain Jack and Will Turner led a group of outlaws aboard the Interceptor and began chasing the Black Pearl. Of course, the two didn't have money, so the deal was just for a ship.

After all, Captain Jack only wanted to take back the Black Pearl, and the Interceptor had been stolen anyway.

The British Royal Navy would surely be furious about the stolen ship, which was perfect these outlaws could take the blame and face the wrath of the British Navy.

Barbossa and his crew sailed the Black Pearl through twists and turns to a hidden cave, a place where pirates hid their treasures.

Looking at the countless gold and silver treasures inside, Scarlett was thrilled: "Gilbert, let's go treasure hunting!"

"Treasure hunting? Are you trying to be a pirate?"

"Yeah, it feels so magical. I love this kind of adventure."

Gilbert shrugged and said, "Nowadays, only Somalia has pirates, Scarlett. I doubt the navy would want to see pirates in the Caribbean their own backyard."

Scarlett was displeased and muttered, "Damn navy, only bullies the weak, humph!"
