Chapter 11 - A Kingdom’s Secrets

The confrontation with Rohanna left the group on edge. The thought of their once-kind classmate having changed so drastically weighed heavily on their minds. As they made their way back to the outskirts of the kingdom, Edred's thoughts raced. They had come here seeking resources and knowledge, but instead, they found themselves entangled in a potential conflict with one of their own.

As the group gathered outside the kingdom's walls, Edred was the first to speak, his tone serious. "We need to be careful moving forward. Rohanna's not just stronger; she's got influence here. We need to figure out what's going on in this kingdom and what role she plays in it."

Lianne, still nursing the bruises from her fight with Rohanna, nodded in agreement. "We can't afford to rush into anything. We need to gather information before making any moves."

Vnz crossed his arms, deep in thought. "We also need to keep an eye on her followers, Quisha and Alexis. They might not be as strong as Rohanna, but they're clearly loyal to her. They could cause problems for us."

Jericho, who had remained silent since leaving the training grounds, finally spoke up. "And what about the kingdom itself? We've only seen a small part of it. If we're going to understand what's happening here, we need to explore more of the city and see how deep Rohanna's influence goes."

Edred nodded, agreeing with Jericho's assessment. "Right. We'll split up and explore the city, but we need to stay low-key. If Rohanna or her knights spot us, we could be in trouble."

The group agreed on their plan and decided to split into pairs. Edred and Lianne would explore the market district, while Vnz and Jericho would investigate the more residential areas. They would regroup at a predetermined location just outside the city walls in a few hours.

As Edred and Lianne made their way into the market district, they were immediately struck by the sheer size and diversity of the place. Stalls lined the streets, selling everything from food and clothing to weapons and magical artifacts. The air was thick with the scent of roasting meat, spices, and fresh bread, mingling with the clamor of merchants hawking their wares and customers haggling over prices.

Lianne marveled at the bustling activity around them. "It's incredible how vibrant this place is. You'd never guess there's any kind of tension here."

Edred nodded, but his eyes were sharp, scanning the crowd for anything unusual. "Yeah, but we can't let our guard down. Rohanna might have a lot of influence, but she's not the only power in this kingdom. There's bound to be other factions at play."

As they walked through the market, they noticed several groups of knights patrolling the area, their armor gleaming in the sunlight. These knights, unlike those under Rohanna's command, seemed more disciplined and organized. They moved with purpose, their eyes constantly scanning the crowd for any signs of trouble.

Lianne frowned as she observed them. "Those knights don't look like they're under Rohanna's command. They're too professional, too… regimented."

Edred agreed. "You're right. There's definitely more going on here than we know. Let's try to find someone who can give us more information."

They continued to wander through the market until they came across a small, unassuming tavern tucked away in a side street. The sign above the door read "The Broken Blade," and the sounds of laughter and conversation could be heard from within.

Edred and Lianne exchanged a glance before entering the tavern. The interior was dimly lit, with wooden tables and chairs scattered around the room. A few patrons sat at the bar, nursing mugs of ale, while a group of men played cards at a table in the corner.

As they approached the bar, the barkeep—a burly man with a thick beard and a scar across his cheek—looked up at them with a curious expression. "What can I get for you?"

Edred smiled politely. "Two ales, please. And maybe some information, if you're willing to share."

The barkeep raised an eyebrow as he poured their drinks. "Information, eh? That depends on what you're looking for."

Lianne leaned in slightly, lowering her voice. "We're new in town, just passing through. But we've noticed that things seem… tense around here. What's going on?"

The barkeep handed them their drinks and leaned on the bar, his expression guarded. "Tense is one way to put it. This kingdom's got more than its fair share of problems. You've got the king, who's trying to keep the peace, but there are plenty of folks who'd rather see him toppled."

Edred took a sip of his ale, trying to appear casual. "And what about the knights? We've seen different groups patrolling the city. Who are they loyal to?"

The barkeep's eyes narrowed slightly. "The knights are loyal to whoever pays them. Some follow the king, some follow the nobles, and some… well, some have their own agendas. You'd best be careful who you trust around here."

Lianne nodded, understanding the man's warning. "Thanks for the advice. We'll keep it in mind."

As they finished their drinks, Edred noticed a group of men at a nearby table glancing in their direction, their expressions wary. One of them, a tall man with a scar running down the side of his face, seemed particularly interested in their conversation.

Edred nudged Lianne, and they both stood up to leave, nodding a farewell to the barkeep. As they stepped outside, Edred's senses were on high alert. The man from the tavern followed them, keeping a reasonable distance.

They walked for several minutes, taking a winding route through the city streets, hoping to shake off their tail. But the man was persistent, matching their pace and staying just out of sight.

Finally, Edred led Lianne down a narrow alley, stopping just out of sight of the main street. They waited in silence, listening for the sound of footsteps. Moments later, the man rounded the corner, and Edred stepped forward, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword.

"Why are you following us?" Edred demanded, his voice low and dangerous.

The man raised his hands in a gesture of peace. "Easy there, friend. I'm not looking for trouble. I just thought you might want to know that you're not the only ones asking questions around here."

Lianne frowned, her eyes narrowing. "What do you mean?"

The man glanced around, making sure they weren't being overheard. "You're not the first outsiders to come through this city. There are others—people with power, influence. They're looking for something, something important. And they don't like competition."

Edred's grip on his sword tightened. "Who are these people?"

The man shook his head. "I don't know much, just rumors. But I've heard talk of a group called the 'Shadow Council.' They're powerful, dangerous. If you're smart, you'll steer clear of them."

Lianne exchanged a worried glance with Edred. "Why are you telling us this?"

The man shrugged. "Let's just say I don't like seeing good people get mixed up in bad business. You seem like decent folk, and I'd hate to see you end up on the wrong side of a blade."

Edred studied the man's face, trying to determine if he was telling the truth. Finally, he nodded. "Thanks for the warning. We'll be careful."

The man nodded in return before turning and walking away, disappearing into the shadows of the alley.

As they made their way back to the meeting point, Edred couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking into something far more dangerous than they had anticipated. The Shadow Council, whoever they were, clearly had a significant presence in this kingdom. And if Rohanna was connected to them, their situation had just become even more precarious.

When they finally reunited with Vnz and Jericho outside the city walls, they quickly shared what they had learned. Vnz and Jericho had also noticed the tension in the city, particularly in the residential areas, where fear and distrust seemed to be the norm.

"We saw people whispering in the streets, looking over their shoulders like they were afraid of being watched," Vnz reported. "And the knights… they're everywhere, but they're not all on the same side. It's like the city's on the brink of civil war."

Jericho nodded in agreement. "We also heard rumors about a group called the 'Shadow Council.' No one seems to know much about them, but they're definitely a major player here."

Edred frowned, deep in thought. "The Shadow Council… that's the same group the man in the tavern warned us about. If they're involved, this situation could be a lot more complicated than we thought."

Lianne crossed her arms, her expression serious. "And if Rohanna's connected to them, we could be in real trouble. We need to figure out what she's up to before it's too late."

The group fell silent, each of them contemplating the gravity of the situation. They had come to this kingdom seeking resources and information, but they had uncovered something far more dangerous—a web of intrigue and power struggles that could easily ensnare them if they weren't careful.

Edred finally broke the silence. "We need to find out more about this Shadow Council and what they're after. But we also need to be careful not to draw too much attention to ourselves. If we make the wrong move, we could end up on the wrong side of this conflict."

Vnz nodded in agreement. "We'll need to keep a low profile and gather information quietly. We can't afford to make any enemies here—at least, not yet."

Jericho added, "And we need to stay vigilant. If Rohanna's involved with this Shadow Council, she might already know we're here. We need to be ready for anything."

Lianne looked around at her friends, her resolve strengthening. "We've faced tough challenges before, and we've always come out on top. We'll figure this out, just like we always do."

Edred smiled at her words, feeling a renewed sense of determination. "You're right, Lianne. We've got each other, and that's our greatest strength. We'll take this one step at a time, and we'll find a way to overcome whatever obstacles lie ahead."

With that, the group set off, leaving the kingdom behind as they ventured further into the unknown. They knew that their journey was far from over and that the challenges they faced would only grow more difficult. But they were ready to face whatever came their way, knowing that together, they could overcome anything.
