Katharina hadn't left her room in several days.
The curtains remained closed, and the only light came from a small gap between the fabrics. The bed was unmade, with pillows scattered around and blankets piled over her body. Trays of untouched food sat on a nearby table, some left there by the maids who had tried to convince her to eat.
She lay on her side, hugging one of Vergil's pillows.
She could still smell a little of his scent.
Katharina closed her eyes and pressed the fabric against her face, trying to remember the last time they'd slept together. She remembered certain things, but she couldn't organize the events. So many memories competed for her attention that whenever she tried to focus on one, she ended up thinking about Vergil's body among the rubble.
And then she remembered Sapphire.
Her mother.
Katharina began crying again.
"Why did you leave me...?" she murmured into the pillow, her voice hoarse after so many days of crying.
There was nobody to answer.
