Chapter 338: Kaeya's Little Scheme

Kaeya wasn't surprised that the Ausbilder had offended someone in another nation.

Judging by his personality, it would actually be stranger if he hadn't offended anyone.

But what kind of person could possibly force someone like the Ausbilder to flee all the way to Mondstadt?

As for Inazuma, Kaeya didn't know much. Since the nation had closed its borders, Mondstadt hadn't been in contact with any intelligence agents there for a long time.

Liyue, on the other hand, was different. Kaeya had once gathered some information related to Ausbilder.

No matter how he looked at it, the one who hated the Ausbilder enough to grind his teeth over it was the Fatui's Eleventh Harbinger, Childe.

Could it be that he'd offended a colleague and fled to Mondstadt to avoid being squeezed out?

"So, Mr. Ausbilder is only staying in Mondstadt temporarily?"

Taking the first sip of his wine, Kaeya asked in a probing tone.

No matter what, he had to figure out how long the Ausbilder intended to stay.

If he planned to settle in Mondstadt long-term…

Kaeya had a feeling he wouldn't have a single peaceful night's sleep for a long time.

"That should be about right."

Bai Luo glanced at him, seeing straight through Kaeya's little scheme.

He neither confirmed nor denied it, just gave a vague answer.

"I wonder if the accommodations at the Goth Grand Hotel are to your liking? Perhaps the Knights of Favonius could arrange a different residence for you?"

Though he spoke of arranging a new residence, Kaeya's true intention was simply to keep the Ausbilder under closer watch, preferably somewhere near his own quarters.

No matter how reluctant he sounded when speaking about the Ausbilder, since he had chosen to make contact with him proactively, he would see the matter through to the end.

It was precisely this sense of responsibility that earned him Jean's deep trust and made him her capable deputy.

"Hmm… that could work. It's just that my subordinates aren't very comfortable there. For example, that poor Electro Cicin Mage—because of static electricity, the Electro Cicins she keeps attracted so much dust that quite a few of them died. I wonder if Captain Kaeya might be able to help?"

Bai Luo wasn't making that up; it had actually happened.

Though it wasn't really the room's fault, Mondstadt's Cicins were simply too… naive.

Confusing pepper powder with Mist Flower pollen was honestly impressive in its own way.

"Well… that's something we truly can't help with. There simply aren't that many vacant rooms in Mondstadt."

No vacant rooms?

As if.

Setting aside the Knights' dormitories, there were plenty of unused residences in the civilian district alone.

But after finally managing to compress the Fatui's living space into the Goth Grand Hotel, why would the Knights of Favonius willingly let them spread out again?

"Speaking of which, Mr. Ausbilder, did you come to Mondstadt to look for someone?"

Seeing the moment was right, Jean picked up the dandelion wine and refilled Bai Luo's glass as she asked.

This, after all, was one of the main purposes of the welcome party.

"Mm, you could say I'm looking for someone."

Bai Luo wasn't surprised that Mondstadt's higher-ups knew about this.

When he had asked Diluc for help before, he hadn't made any effort to hide it.

"If you don't mind, Mr. Ausbilder, you may entrust this matter to the Knights of Favonius."

Jean gave a formal knight's salute.

"We are the organization that understands Mondstadt best. We will certainly not disappoint you."

Seeing how proactive Jean was, Bai Luo more or less understood their intentions.

They were probably assuming that once he found the person he was looking for, he would voluntarily leave.

Unfortunately, their little scheme was destined to fail.

Leaving aside whether they could even find the twins—whom even Bai Luo himself had no way of locating—even if they did, he had no intention of leaving before the Unreconciled Stars Flagship Event officially began.

However…

"Sure. With your help, it'll definitely be more convenient."

As a qualified troublemaker, how could he possibly pass up such free and useful labor?

"May I ask what distinguishing features the person you're looking for has, Mr. Ausbilder?"

In truth, Jean bringing up assistance so early made Kaeya a little uneasy.

But seeing that Bai Luo showed no displeasure—instead readily agreeing to let the Knights of Favonius help—he let out a quiet sigh of relief.

At the same time, he took out paper and pen, preparing to jot down the specific traits of the person Bai Luo was searching for.

"Hmm… blond hair. Wears clothing in a foreign style. Might be accompanied by a rather… magical little thing."

"That's all?"

"Mm."

"..."

Even though Diluc had already warned him that Bai Luo might not even know exactly what he was looking for, the information provided still gave Kaeya a headache.

Blond hair. Foreign-style clothing.

In freedom-loving Mondstadt, it wasn't uncommon to see blond people dressed in exotic attire passing through.

If they followed that lead, who knew how long the search would take?

Thankfully, there was still the final clue to fall back on.

"And what kind of 'magical little thing' would that be? A parrot? A hawk? Or something else?"

"Magical little thing" was far too vague a description.

If he could be more specific, perhaps their job would be easier.

"It's just a very magical little companion. I'm sure the first time you see it, you'll immediately recognize it."

"..."

At first, Kaeya thought that the Ausbilder was just making excuses and stringing him along.

It wasn't until later—when he first encountered the Traveler and the Paimon floating beside them—that he realized:

It truly was a magical little thing.

Getting even this much information was already no small feat in Kaeya's eyes.

After putting away his pen and paper, he stopped probing further. Instead, as he would in a tavern, he began clinking glasses with the Ausbilder.

As a knight who relied on his wits, Kaeya understood perfectly well when to stop.

Using his own judgment, he rationally ended the information-gathering for now.

This was only their first round of maneuvering against Ausbilder. There would be plenty of opportunities later. No need to push him too far.

Of course, that didn't mean he had no ulterior motives.

Originally, following Diluc's suggestion, they had planned to bring some lower-alcohol dandelion wine from Dawn Winery.

After all, Diluc wasn't particularly good at drinking. There had even been an incident where he'd been knocked out by strong liquor.

But Kaeya was different.

After Diluc had been lured away by the Ausbilder, Kaeya returned to the winery alone.

Unlike his sworn brother, he wasn't so courteous.

He selected only the strongest, finest wines.

In his view, only high-proof alcohol stood a chance of getting the Ausbilder drunk.

And once drunk, Kaeya was fully confident he could coax plenty of useful intelligence out of him.

As for the possibility that the Ausbilder might get him drunk instead?

Impossible.

Everyone in Mondstadt knew that the place one was most likely to encounter the Cavalry Captain wasn't the Knights' headquarters, but the taverns at night.

What he excelled at most was skillfully guiding half-drunk patrons into baring their hearts.
