Chapter 821 – Authority

José Mourinho substituted Bruno early away from home to conserve energy for the weekend league match.

Between the October and November international windows, Manchester United faced a brutal run.

October 17: away to Newcastle United; October 21: away to Ajax; October 24: home to Chelsea; October 27: home to Midtjylland; October 31: home to Arsenal; November 3: away to Atalanta; November 7: away to in-form Everton.

Seven matches in twenty days — four in the league, three in the Champions League — none against soft opposition.

For United, this stretch could define the season. Falter here, and the dynasty could crack.

Among these, the home match against Chelsea was pivotal. Lampard's side, turbo-charged by a lavish summer window, were potent despite inconsistency — draws against West Brom and Southampton aside, their attack was humming.

Through five rounds, Chelsea had scored 13 goals — second only to Everton, tied with Liverpool, and one better than United's 12.

Against such a team, Mourinho could not afford complacency.

...

"Rubbish! Think about that first half — what was that?"

"I'm disappointed in you!"

"Fail to win, and everyone's training load doubles!"

Clang!

With a parting threat, Mourinho stormed out.

He was furious. At halftime, 0–0 at home to Chelsea was acceptable, but the team's state was not.

The pressing was gone, combinations were rare; they looked like strangers, a scattered, shapeless mess.

"Yes, a mess!"

"Don't be too angry," Rui Faria coaxed. "The lads are exhausted. Since May they've barely rested. Dips happen — and we're not even behind..."

"It's not just fatigue," Mourinho cut in. "No preseason hurts, yes. But this shouldn't be our level."

"This is a bad sign. The season just began and they're getting carried away, thinking four straight league titles make them invincible? That half is a warning — we must win this game and kill that arrogance now."

...

In the dressing room, captain Bruno stood.

"The coach is right — we played like garbage."

"We didn't rest enough in summer — I know everyone's tired. But now is not the time to rest!"

"The season's just starting; the battles ahead are countless!"

"So in the second half, everyone fights. We won't let the coach down, we won't let the fans down. This is the greatest era in United's history! Miss this chance, and we'll never forgive ourselves."

Bruno, humble by nature, wasn't a blustering captain, but his words hit home.

"The captain's right!" N'Golo Kanté spoke first. "We won't let the coach down."

"In the second half, kick Chelsea's backside!"

"Yeah — make the coach see us differently!"

Mourinho's authority was absolute; this was his first true public fury, and it struck deep.

They respected the coach who had led them from the valley to the summit.

Before the restart, players sneaked looks at the bench. Mourinho's face was stone, his silence chilling. He was truly angry.

The second half had to be fought to the last breath.

Mourinho sat, expression icy, but inside calmer. If United played to standard, Chelsea couldn't live with them.

Now it was up to the players.

...

From the whistle, United were transformed — proactive, aggressive, pinning Chelsea back.

Within ten minutes, they had three shots.

"United look wide awake after the break," said Sky's Andy Gray. "They're pressing Chelsea's goal hard!"

Mourinho watched intently.

Two hundred million or not, he believed the gap was clear. Bruno's presence alone was a constant threat.

He'd set the traps: let Bruno draw double coverage, free Harry Kane between the lines, force Chelsea's full-backs to pinch in.

Then space would open wide — perfect for Marcus Rashford and Kylian Mbappé to devastate with speed.

The goal would come. He just had to wait.

This was his team, sculpted for over four years. He trusted them.

Hopefully, not for long...

...

Fifteen minutes in, United were rampant, waves of red battering blue.

At home, even the remote fans were bouncing.

"That's it! That's our United!"

"Finish them!"

The mood flipped — first-half lethargy forgotten. Their irresistible United had returned.

Kai Havertz tried a lofted pass; Kanté read it early, headed clear, then stepped in front to shield the return.

"Kanté! Interception!" Martin Tyler cried. "Havertz too casual!"

"United counter — Kanté finds Bruno!"

"Brilliant!"

Bruno rolled and burst away in one motion, then tore down the flank.

"Bruno! The pass — beautiful! It slices the line... Rashford!"

United's academy jewel met the perfect square ball in acres of space — Chelsea's defense had been dragged right by Bruno's surge.

Rashford took the pass unmarked, opened up, and whipped his right foot.

"GOOOOOOOOOOOALLLLLLLLLL! A genius strike! Rashford's 100th career goal across competitions! Since Mourinho took charge, he's blossomed into a lethal force! 1–0! United break the deadlock!"

...

United celebrated wildly, even without a crowd's roar.

Mourinho slapped the seat, half-rising — then sat back, face set, telegraphing the message: one goal isn't enough.

Five minutes later, Mbappé was fouled upfield. United took the free kick quickly; Kanté fed Bruno, who cut inside, wriggled half a yard, and let fly.

The ball skimmed past bodies and kissed the inside of the post on its way in.

Dean Henderson — the former United academy keeper now in Chelsea colors — didn't move.

"GOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!"

This time, Mourinho sprang off the bench and sprinted down the touchline, fists pumping.

"That's Manchester United — and that's Mourinho," Andy Gray exulted. "Whatever he said at halftime worked wonders. After a sleepy first half, they're electrifying — 2–0, and with less than half an hour left, the result looks sealed. Win this, and they go top of the table for the first time this season!"

When the final whistle blew, it was still 2–0.

"Congratulations to United, to Mourinho, to Bruno — 2–0 and top at last! The charge for five straight league titles is on! This is the greatest moment in this century-old club's history!"
