Chapter 820 – Dominance

Sometimes in football, when the tactics click and players find their rhythm, the goal simply arrives.

In the 45th minute, just before stoppage time, Bruno, trapped by Mazraoui and Gravenberch on an attack, recycled play left to Luke Shaw.

Shaw whipped a cross to the far post. Harry Kane won the first header and nodded it back into the box.

Jude Bellingham hit it first time, but under pressure from Klaassen it cannoned off Daley Blind.

Chaos ensued in the middle. Kane and Rashford battled for second balls as Ajax's holding midfielder and center-backs swarmed.

By some quirk, a loose touch sent the ball rolling to Bruno on the left.

Momentarily surprised, Bruno reacted instantly.

Tadić lunged recklessly; Bruno calmly nudged the ball central to evade him and swept a skidding right-footer.

The ball zipped past Tadić toward the bottom-left corner.

Onana reacted and sprang again — but this time, unlike earlier, the shot's speed and surprise beat him. He dived too late; the ball rolled into the net.

...

"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!"

"Forty-fifth minute — Bruno seizes a sudden chance, drilling a low shot to break Ajax's resistance. A bolt from the blue."

"It encapsulates his knack for decisive moments — poised, clinical, and now clearly playing with freedom."

"That's Bruno's 77th Champions League proper goal, 80 overall — third all-time behind Messi's 115 and Cristiano Ronaldo's 130! Legends like Raúl, Robert Lewandowski, and Karim Benzema trail him now."

"It's only his sixth Champions League season. Across his prior five, he tallied 76 in 56 UCL matches — an even higher rate than in domestic play. A man made for the big stage."

"And it's not just Europe — in every major competition, his strike rate spikes."

"In the Champions League alone, 42 of those 77 came in knockout rounds — a staggering 54.5%."

...

Bruno tore off to celebrate wildly.

Slow-motion replays showed the scrum at the top of the box where no one knew where the ball would break.

Hindsight revealed Kane's vital poke that nudged it Bruno's way.

"Tadić looks off it tonight. He should have stayed composed there — he overcommitted, and Bruno's simple touch inside took him out," Davids sighed.

"That's what match-winners do," Van Persie said. "Give Bruno an inch and he makes a yard — he's taxed Ajax's defense all half."

With Lisandro injured, Tadić booked, and now the goal...

"And this isn't even peak-form Bruno," Van der Vaart noted ruefully.

Ajax's malaise — especially Tadić's — and Ten Hag's plan being suffocated by Mourinho made them second-best all over.

"At this rate, the second half will punish them," Davids worried.

...

United took a 1–0 lead into the break.

Mourinho was delighted — especially with Bruno, who hit his brief to a tee. Rashford and Mbappé also earned praise for relentlessly stretching Ajax's back line.

He urged Bruno, Rashford, and Mbappé to keep crashing into the defense with pace after the restart.

The rest were to supply and support the front line relentlessly.

United resumed with the same blueprint — a slick, high press ratcheting pressure onto Ajax.

This was muscle memory now — when to jump, when to lock, when to squeeze, when to drop — the players executed instinctively.

Even without Gündoğan, Kanté and Bruno patrolled midfield, while young Bellingham impressed — United reasserted control early in the half.

Within five minutes, Bruno cut in from the left and slipped a diagonal to Kane.

As the striker took it to wall-pass back, Tadić lunged in studs-up.

Kane tumbled; the whistle shrieked — a second yellow for Tadić, then red. Off he went.

...

A bad night got worse: one injury, one red — both central pillars gone.

Ten Hag reacted quickly, sending Zakaria Labyad on for Kudus and morphing into a 4-4-1, sinking deep.

It was a bunker — and exactly what United didn't want.

Bruno even felt the red card might be a mixed blessing.

At eleven vs eleven, a trailing Ajax would have chased the game, leaving gaps. Down a man, they could sit in and smother, playing for damage control.

So it proved. Ajax packed their half and box, conceding the ball but denying clear chances.

United dominated territory and possession, but the lock never cracked fully.

Even with Kane as an aerial focal point and a few dangerous flurries, the gilt-edged openings didn't come.

...

It finished 1–0 to United — a vital away win to start the Champions League group.

When the whistle blew, Bruno, subbed off for Juan Mata on 70 minutes, exhaled on the bench.

United had largely managed the final half-hour, spending energy to drain the clock rather than force the issue.

A 0–1 home loss left Ajax short of expectations, with little punch and Ten Hag's setup outmaneuvered by Mourinho.

It was only Matchday 1, but United radiated confidence — barring surprises, they fancied topping the group.

As for Ten Hag — the coach who, in another timeline, would one day manage United — Bruno sensed there was something there, but not enough. In a second-tier league with superior resources, you can thrive; in the Premier League's furnace, it is far harder to truly succeed.

...

Despite United's win, they did not top the group. Atalanta thrashed Midtjylland 4–0 away and led on goal difference.

Elsewhere, the first matchday delivered a seismic shock: Real Madrid, the "Kings of Europe," lost 2–3 at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.

Teté scored and forced a Raphaël Varane own goal for a 3–0 halftime lead; after the break, Luka Modrić's screamer and a goal from substitute Vinícius Júnior inside 15 seconds narrowed it, but Madrid fell 2–3 — the day's biggest upset.

English clubs impressed: Manchester City beat Porto 3–1 at home; Liverpool edged Atlético Madrid 2–1 away; only Chelsea failed to win, drawing 0–0 at home with Europa League royalty Sevilla.

In the Europa League, English dominance was even clearer: Arsenal won 2–1 away at Rapid Wien; Leicester City cruised 3–0 at home over Zorya; Tottenham Hotspur rolled LASK 3–0 at home.

Seven matches, six wins, one draw — the Premier League showed the world why it's the number one league.
