Chapter 189 - 189 - The world tree beckons

*

It's almost as if the air changed. A new presence fills the very atmosphere, the easiest natural form of energy for {Feed} to utilise was magical energy. It has now taken possession of the entire air column over the residential zone. More, it won't stop here.

When the mirror type Trace finishes off its last victim in some other residential zones, killing off all students in their school, it materialises back in the real world. An Event is triggered.

"...!?" (?)

"...!! This... Boss..." (?)

"Did our plan fail? How are Events getting triggered? Their existence should have been masked..." (Mastermind?)

"Eterna... Has she adapted to the mechanism? The Event system works in place independent of her involvement, but we still needed her subdued to prevent a lot of things..." ({Nerve} ?)

"... A powerful signal was picked up from far away. Zone 2A... We had our eye on that palace, but I didnt expect... " (Mastermind?)

" Another sentinel level entity... Possibly stronger. A nascent Heavenly King?

This signal's bio encryption is different from anything we've encountered. We have to observe in person to note down their species and power.

If they're a Trace it would be a simple matter of taming them, but a Remnant or Heavenly King would be far too dangerous. We should know first hand the power of intelligence. " ({Nerve}?)

"... Well, it's been a long time, so let's have good ol' Deneb Argadia do it. " (Mastermind?)

"... If not for the sentinels, he would be put to work earlier. The Observer and The Calamity alerted the global government, keeping them in hiding had been a massive pain. " ({Nerve}?)

Their expressions were hard to observe under the dim light, a large volume of words left unsaid. In particular, the two most powerful beings here could easily navigate without relying on sight, feeling the mold of the world around them with their magic perception. They didn't need to use words, they seem somewhat sluggish or leisurely because work is being done for them. Not even their subordinates know the true extent of their capabilities.

"Trace? Remnant? Heavenly king...

I found you." (Yggdrasil)

"...!?" (Both)

For once, their expressions betray shock. This was a feat no one in the current era should be capable of. They hadn't taken the necessary measures because they hadn't expected another person on the level of Eterna... Or at least approaching.

"{Nerve}, Systematic isolation}" ({Nerve}?)

A glossy transparent film wraps around them before their appearances vanish. Likely a technic that functions similarly to an invisible cloak. The specifics of magical mechanisms are important when one is trying to exploit weaknesses and use minimal energy. That doesn't apply in this situation, the mechanics can be ignored. The essence of magic is mystics, the incomprehension of universal laws, such that it's more important for the result to be achieved than for the journey to be rightful.

In other words, most of the time magic works by forcing something into existence. Creating result while omitting cause, if the result-, the function can be understood then it can also be ignored. Let's say a skill creates fire, magical energy is ostensibly the fuel but at higher magical proficiencies, the magical energy cost is negligible to producing better results. Magical energy can be quantified, but it isn't the fuel, it's the igniter. Yet, the fire can still be quelled by lowering the temperature.

A powerful heatwave erupts as explosive force tears through the walls, leaving nothing in its wake. There's no need to find these foes, an explosion in an enclose space will hit them. She was definitely much stronger than the last time she went berserk. The tree is pitch black, its branches and roots wrap around residential zone 2A like tendrils. It doesn't respond to phenomena or interference, it stays in place and doesn't budge from attempts to excavate.

Nothing would remove it, nothing would affect it.

"Trying to hide?" (Yggdrasil)

Existence isolation. The explosion didn't leave a single scratch, all manners of detection lose efficacy. They were in a highrise building located in a distant commercial zone. A rented office space with fully covered blinds and sound barriers. A spear made of black light materialises in the air, a smooth pole with two sharp ends and several ridges casts its sheen under the setting sun, glowing gold with its hunger for light. It was made of magical energy solidified by {Feed}, it's usual reddish black hue had darkened due to the density.

Same with the tree in school, it was massive enough to remind people of Babel, but it had no mass. It was solid and couldn't be interacted with, but beyond its outer appearance no one would have knowledge of its contents.

The spear shifts out of focus, moving at ultra fast speeds. It collides with the air, causing a massive shock wave that blasted a hole through nearby clouds. It... Passed through the space where the enemies were supposedly at. Were they... Gone? No, the spear might have simply passed through them. They became an incorporeal state, perhaps. Cold sweat dripped down {Nerve}'s temple as he watched the spear pass through their bodies. Without his magic, would they have survived? Probably, but the damage was no joke. They couldn't passively receive it without getting significant injuries.

How... How did she know? The spear precisely impaled the two and stopped in mid air, she was clearly surprise by the lack of feedback, but it was still a precise attack. Their location shouldn't be known, they cut off their existence and left not a single way to track them. However, since their existence is cut off from reality, they can't move through space either. They're trapped in place until Yggdrasil leaves. How did she find them? There are no electrical or magical jammers in place, because that would be like advertising their location to the whole world.

Their concealment was practically guaranteed, because they were going analogue. The master's communication system works by relaying messages through magic, but they're reasonably distanced both physically and in frequency. {Nerve} is the last node of the relay system, receiving messages by paper letters from the nearest relay point.

In other words, no matter how much you conceal sound or light, Yggdrasil could peak through the entire world and find you. That was the reality of the situation. Then...

"Don't reveal us. She doesn't know how it works, we wait and then we don't say a thing as we run to hideout 2C. " (Mastermind?)

"Alright, boss." ({Nerve}?)

The game of patience has begun.
