Every five steps someone had something to say, and by the time I set the last tray down my head felt full, and then she walked in with that slow smile older women use when they think they have you figured out.
“Oh sweetheart, you’re holding her all tense,” she went, and her eyes ran over me in a way that felt heavy, “first babies always make young mothers act like this, and you’ll calm down after a few more.”
My fingers tightened around Lily, and I kept my voice even for one second.
“I’m fine,” I replied, and I turned a bit so Lily stayed close.
She let out a soft hum, and she leaned closer like we were sharing secrets.
“You think you are fine, but you keep your shoulders up and your breath too fast, and the baby feels all that, so maybe let someone older guide you before you make a mess of her routine.”
A woman beside her gave a small laugh, and I felt heat crawl up my neck.
“I have her routine handled,” I answered, and I kept my chin up.
