Chapter 17 - Invitation

Eldrin arrived just as the clash between Aldrich and Arthur came to an end. His presence was commanding, He wore a flowing mage's robe, a deep azure with silver embroidery that shimmered in the fading light. His long, white hair was tied back, and his sharp, blue eyes twinkled with intelligence and authority. A neatly trimmed beard framed his face, giving him a sage-like appearance.

Arthur looking at Eldrin appearance smiled, sheathing his sword. "Eldrin, always the dramatic entrance."

"Is it fun bullying a young kid, Arthur?" Eldrin's voice was smooth but carried a weight that made Arthur lower his sword and step back.

Arthu give a wry smile. "Just a friendly duel, Eldrin. I wanted to see what he was capable of."

Eldrin turned to Aldrich, his gaze softening. "Aldrich, it's good to finally meet you. Why don't you come with me? We have much to discuss, and this isn't the place for such conversations."

Aldrich nodded cautiously, his guard still up. "Lead the way."

Aldrich glanced at Arthur, who gave a reassuring nod. He accepted Eldrin's invitation, and they began to walk away from the field, leaving Arthur behind.

As Aldrich and Eldrin disappeared from view, Arthur remained, his posture relaxed but his eyes alert. A faint shimmer in the air beside him heralded the arrival of another presence.

"Quite the spectacle, brother," a soft, melodic voice said, breaking the stillness. A woman materialized beside Arthur, her form gradually becoming visible. She was ethereal, with flowing silver hair and eyes that seemed to hold the stars. She wore a simple yet elegant gown that matched her celestial aura.

Arthur turned to her, his expression fond. "It was a good fight. Aldrich has great potential."

The woman smiled, her gaze following where Aldrich and Eldrin had gone. "Eldrin seems to think so too. He wouldn't have intervened otherwise."

Arthur nodded, his eyes thoughtful. "He sees something in Aldrich, something worth nurturing."

The woman tilted her head, her eyes narrowing slightly. "And you, Arthur? What do you see in him?"

Arthur sighed, his expression serious. "Aldrich is driven by a fierce determination, a desire to reclaim what he's lost. But he's also at a crossroads. How he chooses to wield his power will define his path."

The woman placed a gentle hand on Arthur's shoulder. "You've always had a keen eye for potential. Let's hope Eldrin can guide him wisely."

Arthur nodded, his eyes meeting his sister's. "Yes, let's hope so. For all our sakes."

Aldrich's POV

Eldrin led me back to his place. He gestured for me to sit at a table, and he took a seat opposite me.

"Before we begin, allow me to formally introduce myself," Eldrin said. "I am Eldrin, Guardian of the Mortal Realm."

I studied him, noting the depth of his aura and the wisdom in his eyes. "Guardian of the Mortal Realm? That's quite the title."

He nodded. "It is a responsibility I bear with pride. Now, Aldrich, I know you have many questions. Ask them, and I will answer what I can."

I leaned forward, eager to understand more about this place and its inhabitants. "What is this village? Why are there so many powerful presences here?"

Eldrin smiled. "This village is a sanctuary, a place for those who seek to protect and guide the mortal realm. We are a community of mages, warriors, and scholars, all dedicated to maintaining balance and order."

"And the gods?" I pressed. "What's your connection to them?"

Eldrin's expression darkened slightly. "The gods once reigned supreme over this world, imposing their will upon mortals. They were not benevolent rulers. Their fall came after a long and brutal conflict, a war that reshaped the world as we know it."

I frowned. "And you fought in this war?"

"Yes," Eldrin admitted. "Many of us did. We fought for the freedom of the mortal realm, to break the chains that bound us to their whims."

"So, what's your goal now? To rebuild? To prepare for their return?"

"Both," Eldrin said. "We seek to rebuild what was lost, to create a world where mortals can thrive without the tyranny of the gods. But we also prepare for their inevitable return. The signs are there; the gods are stirring."

I narrowed my eyes. "And you want me to join you?"

Eldrin nodded. "You have great potential, Aldrich. Your power, your determination – they are what we need. But this is not a decision to be taken lightly. There are dangers ahead, challenges that will test your very limits."

I leaned back, my mind racing. "Who else is part of your group? How many of you are there?"

"We are many, spread across the world," Eldrin said. "Some, like Arthur, are renowned figures from history. Others work in the shadows, their names unknown to most. But all are dedicated to our cause."

"And what exactly is your cause?" I asked. "To defeat the gods? To protect the mortal realm?"

"Both," Eldrin repeated. "We seek to defend this world from any who would seek to dominate it, be they gods or other powerful beings. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that mortals can determine their own fate."

I studied him, trying to gauge his sincerity. "And why me? Why do you think I would be interested in joining your cause?"

Eldrin leaned forward, his gaze intense. "Because you are special, Aldrich. There are those among us who have foreseen your arrival, a prophecy that speaks of someone who will be the downfall of the gods. You have the potential to reclaim great power and forge your own path. Joining us will give you the resources and support to achieve this, while also giving you a purpose greater than yourself."

I considered his words, the weight of his offer settling on me. "I need time to think about this."

"Of course," Eldrin said, standing up. "Take all the time you need. This is not a decision to be rushed. But know this, Aldrich – we need you. The mortal realm needs you."

With that, he left me alone with my thoughts.
