Chapter 3 - Journey through the Outer zone

The next morning, Nero awoke with a sense of determination he hadn't felt in years. The decision to venture into Sector Seven, despite the immense danger, filled him with a strange blend of fear and excitement. He quickly prepared for the journey, packing what little provisions he had left and ensuring his gear was in order.Felix arrived just as the sun began to rise, carrying his own makeshift backpack filled with supplies and tools. Gareth joined them shortly after, his face still bearing the marks of his encounter with the guards. The three of them exchanged silent nods, each understanding the gravity of what they were about to undertake."We ready?" Felix asked, his voice steady but his eyes betraying a hint of apprehension.Nero nodded. "As ready as we'll ever be."Their journey through the city was uneventful, the early morning streets still shrouded in a thin mist. But as they approached the Outer Zone, the atmosphere changed. The buildings became more dilapidated, the air thicker with the stench of decay. Wraiths were a constant threat here, lurking in the shadows, drawn to the despair that permeated the area.Nero led the way, his senses heightened by the ever-present danger. He remembered the stories his parents used to tell him about navigating the Outer Zone—stories filled with cautionary tales and hard-earned wisdom. He clutched the pendant around his neck, a relic from his parents, hoping it would provide some semblance of protection. As they moved deeper into the ruins, the environment grew increasingly hostile. The ground was littered with debris, and the remnants of once-thriving factories loomed like skeletal giants. Strange noises echoed through the empty streets, a constant reminder that they were not alone."Stay close," Nero whispered, his eyes scanning the surroundings for any signs of movement.Felix, always the pragmatist, pulled out a small device from his backpack. "This should help us detect any wraith activity nearby," he explained, switching it on. The device emitted a faint hum, its screen displaying a series of fluctuating lines.Nero felt a spark of curiosity. He hadn't seen anyone in the Outer Zone use anything like this. Glancing at Felix, he thought to himself how the old scavenger had always been a mystery. Even the information on where he found out about factory in Sector Seven was shrouded in mystery. But Nero supposed you don't survive as long as Felix does as a scavenger without having a secret or two. And at the end of the day he respected Felix enough to stay out of his business. Instead, it was better if he focused on their goals. They continued cautiously, the device proving invaluable as it alerted them to wraiths lurking in the vicinity. Several times, they had to take detours, avoiding the ghostly apparitions that drifted aimlessly through the ruins. Each encounter left them more on edge, their nerves frayed by the constant threat of attack. At one point, they came across a group of scavengers huddled around a makeshift fire. The scavengers eyed them warily, their expressions hardened by years of surviving in the Outer Zone. Nero exchanged a few words with their leader, trading some of their meager supplies for information about the path ahead."You folks are either extremely brave or incredibly foolish to risk going to Sector Seven," the leader stated, his voice rough and gravelly. "But if you're determined to go to that deathtrap, follow the old rail line. It's the quickest way, but it's also heavily patrolled by wraiths."Nero thanked him and led the group onward, their resolve unshaken despite the grim warning. The rail line was easy to find, its rusted tracks a stark contrast against the rubble-strewn landscape. They followed it cautiously, their footsteps echoing in the eerie silence. As they progressed, the dangers became more pronounced. They encountered a series of collapsed tunnels, forcing them to navigate through tight, claustrophobic spaces. At one point, Gareth slipped and nearly fell into a deep chasm, his scream cut short by Felix's quick reflexes as he grabbed his arm and pulled him back to safety."Careful," Felix muttered, his face pale with fear. "We can't afford any mistakes out here."Nero agreed, his heart pounding in his chest. The path ahead was treacherous, filled with obstacles that tested their endurance and resolve. They had to scale crumbling walls, cross rickety bridges, and avoid patches of unstable ground that threatened to give way beneath their feet.During one particularly harrowing stretch, they were forced to crawl through a narrow passage filled with sharp, jagged rocks. Nero's hands bled from the effort, his muscles aching with every movement. But he pushed through, driven by this hunger to escape this life. Finally, as the sun began to set, they reached a small clearing where they decided to set up camp for the night. Exhausted and battered, they built a small fire and huddled around it, grateful for the brief respite. Gareth broke the silence, his voice tinged with curiosity. "Nero, do you think we'll actually find anything in that factory?"Nero stared into the flames, his mind filled with thoughts of the future and the past. "I can't say," he admitted. "I can only hope that all this ends up being worth it."Felix nodded, his face illuminated by the flickering light. "We've come this far. We can't turn back now."As they settled in for the night, Nero couldn't shake the feeling that their journey was only beginning. The path ahead was fraught with danger, but looking at his comrades, he felt they were ready to overcome whatever stood in their way. Bound by a shared purpose, and together, they would break through whatever challenges lay ahead.Nero lay back, staring up at the starless sky, his thoughts drifting to the factory in Sector Seven. The unknown awaited them, filled with both promise and peril. But he was ready to face it.
