Chapter 15 - Chapter Fifteen:The Weight Of The Crown

The moon hung low over the campus, its pale glow bleeding through the tall windows of the empty gymnasium. The silence was broken only by the steady echo of footsteps—Devon's.

Warren stood in the shadows near the far wall, arms folded, his expression unreadable. He'd been expecting this.

"You're late," Warren said, his voice calm, controlled.

Devon smirked, stepping closer. "You've been avoiding me. So I figured I'd save you the trouble."

Warren's eyes narrowed, but he said nothing.

Devon's gaze sharpened, his tone suddenly cutting. "How long are you going to keep her in the dark?"

Warren's jaw tightened. "Hazel doesn't need to know. Not yet."

"Not yet?" Devon echoed, his voice laced with disbelief. "She deserves the truth, Warren. About us. About Caelthorn. About who you really are."

"She's not ready," Warren snapped, his composure cracking. "If she knew everything, it would destroy her."

Devon stepped closer, lowering his voice, but his words were sharp as glass. "No. What will destroy her is finding out too late. You think you're protecting her, but you're only protecting yourself."

The accusation stung, but Warren didn't flinch. His silence said enough.

Devon exhaled, shaking his head. "You've always carried the weight of the crown like it was chains. But you can't ignore this forever. Time isn't on your side, brother."

Warren's gaze flickered, haunted by the truth in Devon's words. "I just need time. She has to see me for who I am, not what I was born to be."

Devon's smirk returned, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Time is exactly what you don't have. The council won't wait forever. If you don't find a queen, if you don't claim the throne…" He let the words hang, heavy with warning. "…then I will."

Warren's fists clenched at his sides, the air between them thick with tension. "You wouldn't dare."

Devon's crimson eyes gleamed faintly in the dim light, his smirk fading into something colder. "Don't test me. The kingdom needs a ruler. If you keep hesitating, I'll do what you can't."

For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence was heavier than any words—two brothers bound by blood, torn by duty, and divided by the girl who unknowingly stood at the heart of it all.

Finally, Devon turned, his footsteps echoing as he walked toward the door.

"Tell her the truth, Warren," he said without looking back. "Or I will."

The gym doors creaked shut behind him, leaving Warren alone in the moonlight.

And for the first time, the crown felt heavier than ever.

But Warren wasn't the only one carrying a burden that night.

Devon didn't return to his dorm. Instead, he crossed the campus grounds with steady purpose, the shadows swallowing him until he reached the edge of the east wing, where Blair waited. She leaned casually against the stone wall, her dark hair shimmering beneath the dim lanterns. Her crimson lips curved into a knowing smile the moment she saw him.

"You called for me," she said softly, her voice lilting like silk.

Devon's expression was unreadable, but his eyes glinted with something dangerous. "Warren isn't ready. He keeps clinging to Hazel like she's the answer. But she's not."

Blair's smile sharpened. "Because she's human."

Devon nodded. "Exactly. Caelthorn will never accept a human queen. The council would tear him apart before they allowed it. Warren knows this, but he refuses to let go."

Blair tilted her head, studying him. "So what are you saying, Devon?"

He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "I'm saying the kingdom needs strength. A ruler who isn't blinded by foolish attachments. You're not just anyone, Blair—you're a princess of your own bloodline. A vampire, like us. Together, we could unite kingdoms. Together, we could rule."

Blair's eyes glowed faintly in the dark, intrigue sparking in their depths. "And your brother?"

Devon's jaw tightened. "If Warren can't choose, the throne will choose for him. And when it does, he won't be standing on it."

For a moment, silence lingered, thick with unspoken promises and dangerous possibilities. Blair's lips curved again, this time with satisfaction.

"Perhaps," she whispered, stepping close enough for her breath to graze his ear, "you and I are not so different after all."

Devon's smirk returned, cold and deliberate. "Perhaps not."

As they walked side by side into the shadows, a secret alliance began to form—one that Hazel could never have imagined. For while Warren wrestled with love and loyalty, Devon was already planning a throne that might never be his brother's to claim.

And somewhere in the dark, fate stirred, waiting for the inevitable clash between blood, love, and power.

As they walked side by side into the shadows, a secret alliance began to form—one that Hazel could never have imagined. For while Warren wrestled with love and loyalty, Devon was already planning a throne that might never be his brother's to claim.

But alliances like this were never born of trust—they were forged from ambition. Blair glanced at him from the corner of her eye, her thoughts hidden behind a carefully practiced smile. She had grown up in a kingdom where betrayal was an art form and deception was the language of survival. She knew better than to believe Devon's offer came without strings. Yet, she also understood power when she saw it, and the idea of ruling Caelthorn tempted her more than she cared to admit.

"You want to use me," Blair murmured after a long silence, her heels clicking softly against the cobblestone path.

Devon smirked, unbothered. "And you want to use me. At least we're honest about that."

Her lips curved, though her eyes never softened. "Honest liars. The best kind."

Devon chuckled low, but his expression darkened a moment later. "Make no mistake, Blair. If Warren doesn't act soon, the council will strip him of the crown. They're already restless. They see his obsession with Hazel as weakness. A king with no queen is dangerous—but a king with a human queen? That's suicide."

Blair tilted her head. "You really think Hazel matters that much to him?"

Devon's jaw flexed. "She's all he sees. It's pathetic, really. She's a girl who doesn't even belong in our world, yet he's ready to risk everything for her."

Blair stopped walking, turning to face him fully. Her eyes glowed faintly in the darkness, betraying her royal bloodline. "Then maybe we should speed things along. Push Hazel out of the picture. Make it impossible for the council to ever see her as queen."

Devon raised a brow. "And how exactly do you plan to do that?"

Blair smiled, the kind of smile that promised danger. "Leave that to me."

Devon studied her for a long moment, then nodded. For now, their goals aligned. But even as they walked into the night, each carried their own secret agenda, both knowing that when the time came, only one of them could truly sit beside the throne.

Neither of them knew the truth—the one secret Warren and Hazel's parents had fought desperately to protect. Hazel was no fragile human. She was the last of a bloodline thought long extinguished, a legacy of white witches feared by vampires and hunted by kings.

And when that truth finally came to light, both Devon and Blair would realize too late that their carefully laid plans had overlooked the one girl destined to shatter kingdoms.
