Chapter 17 - Adventure guild

Ray sprinted through the labyrinthine streets of the city, each step a rhythmic echo against the cobblestone paths.

The grandeur of the buildings that towered over him was a stark contrast to the cramped, shadowy alleys he darted through. The towering spires and intricate facades of the affluent district loomed above, casting long shadows that danced in the light of the gas lamps flickering along the avenues.

Yet, as he moved further from the opulence, the surroundings became less refined—replaced by crumbling walls and makeshift shelters of the city's poorer quarters.

Despite the imposing structures and the bustle of the city, Ray moved with the grace of a predator. His training had taught him how to minimize sound, and tonight, he was a phantom in the night.

The sharp, cool air whispered around him as he navigated the maze of streets with practiced ease, his eyes scanning for landmarks he recalled from his previous outing.

The encounter had been grueling, but the satisfaction of having taken down the formidable boss left a lingering tension in his muscles. He sighed, the sound barely a murmur, reflecting on the arduous path he had traveled. His journey was not yet complete, and his destination lay just ahead.

The Adventure Guild came into view, its grand structure dominating the end of the street. The building was a marvel of architectural mastery, its facade adorned with ornate carvings and intricate designs that spoke of a bygone era of splendor. The façade was grand, with towering pillars and an archway that seemed to reach towards the heavens. Despite the late hour, the guild was still alive with activity, its windows glowing warmly in the night.

Ray approached the entrance, his footsteps silent against the polished stone floor. He barely noticed the faint hum of conversation and laughter spilling out from within. As he reached the large oak doors, a momentary lapse in his focus nearly caused him to collide with a large, muscular man.

The man was bald with a distinctive scar cutting across his face—a mark of many battles fought. The man glared at Ray with a mix of annoyance and curiosity, his imposing presence a stark contrast to Ray's more unassuming appearance.

Though Ray didn't know who he was but he would later. Ray shrugged nonchalantly, a slight smirk playing on his lips, before pushing open the heavy doors and stepping inside.

The interior of the Adventure Guild was a vibrant tapestry of activity and sound. The room was spacious, with high ceilings that seemed to stretch endlessly above. The walls were lined with wooden panels, intricately carved with scenes of legendary quests and battles. The air was thick with the aroma of roasted meat, freshly baked bread, and the occasional whiff of strong ale. A large hearth crackled at one end of the room, casting a warm, flickering light that danced across the faces of the patrons.

The guild's tavern-like atmosphere was alive with the clamor of conversation and laughter. Tables and benches were scattered throughout, each occupied by a diverse array of adventurers.

Some were in the midst of hearty meals, their plates piled high with food, while others engaged in animated discussions or friendly arguments. The room was filled with the sounds of clinking mugs and the occasional cheer or shout.

Ray's entrance drew a few curious glances from the crowd. His youthful appearance and somewhat austere demeanor contrasted sharply with the rough-and-tumble adventurers around him. Despite the fleeting interest, the patrons quickly returned to their own activities, dismissing him as just another newcomer.

Ray paid them little mind, his focus sharp as he made his way to the reception area.

The reception desk was a raised platform situated near the back of the room, offering a commanding view of the bustling interior. Behind it stood a beautiful woman with flowing blonde hair, her attire neat and professional.

Her calm demeanor and the subtle grace with which she moved suggested a long tenure at her post.

Ray approached the desk with measured steps, his gaze fixed intently on the receptionist. There was a brief moment of surprise in her eyes as she took in his youthful appearance, but she quickly masked it with a professional smile.

"Good evening," she said,

her voice warm and inviting despite the surprise evident in her eyes.

"How can I assist you tonight?" she asked...
