Chapter 158 - Chapter 154: Gifts and shadow self

Kai sat perched on the edge of a mahogany table, his legs crossed with casual elegance as he took a loud, crunching bite of a green apple. Beside him sat a nondescript delivery box, taped shut but humming with a faint, rhythmic magical resonance.

"You know, I gotta hand it to you," Kai said, gesturing toward the woman sitting in front of him with his half-eaten fruit. "You are one diabolical woman. I mean, come on, I knew you were smart, but this level of intellect? It's starting to make you a dangerous entity, even by my standards. Tell me, how exactly did you do it? How did you manage to grow... that ... in such a short amount of time without disrupting the flow of energy I've created here?"

He leaned in, his eyes sparking with genuine fascination. "And not just that, but you accounted for the series of adverse reactions from mixing two different magical signatures. If I were to guess, I'd say you used a magical conductive creature for this tiny experiment of yours." He looked up from the apple with a deeply amused expression. "So, what was the catalyst? A leech? The heart of a leprechaun? Or maybe that real estate incubus? Wait, was it real estate or was he into crypto? I always get those soul-sucking demographics mixed up."

Marina stood across from him, her arms folded tightly and her foot tapping a rapid, irritated rhythm against the floor. "What the fuck do you want, Kai? I've got things to do, a world without magic to manipulate and people to extort so spill it. I don't have time for the 'Man of Mystery' routine."

Kai flashed that signature smirk, "Don't you miss me, Marina? Just a little? After everything we've been through? The betrayal, the resurrection, the occasional murder? I'm hurt. Genuinely."

He hopped off the table, pacing around her, "You know, I've been thinking about the fundamental structure of your morality. It's like a Jenga tower built out of spite and overpriced hair products. It's magnificent. Terrifying, but magnificent. Does it ever worry you? That one day you'll wake up and realize I'm the only sane person you know?"

Marina stared at him with a stony expression, "Are you done with the monologue? Because my sanity is doing just fine without your input."

"No? Wow, tough crowd," Kai chuckled, shaking his head. "Oh well. I, on the other hand, have missed you terribly, Marina."

She glanced at the humming delivery box. "What's in the box, Kai?"

"A present!" Kai chirped, his voice dropping into a tone of mock reverence, "A gift for an esteemed lady. I've done my research, you see. I know your gender and I know your collective weakness for getting high-end things and artifacts for free."

Marina's eyes narrowed. "Hey, that's sexist, you know."

Kai didn't even flinch at the accusation. He just took another bite of his apple and shrugged. "Marina, I am an unkillable immortal and a near-god-level entity who has managed to capture a few gods off guard. Sue me."

Marina paused, her gaze shifting from the box back to Kai's unrepentant face. After a long silence, she let out a weary sigh. "Okay. Good point."

———-

Kai and Marina strolled along the walkway. The delivery box in Kai's arms seemed to pulse in time with his footsteps, "So, what exactly is it you want from this 'lady' you're planning to gift that thing to?" Marina asked, nodding toward the package. "You don't strike me as the 'Secret Santa' type unless the gift is rigged to explode or start a cult."

Kai merely chuckled, "Oh, it's just something mundane, you see. A total paperweight to her as of now. But to me? Well, it's a trinket. A souvenir from a future that hasn't happened yet." He looked at her sideways, "Why the sudden investigative journalism, Marina? Are you interested in coming into possession of my prize? Or did you finally manage to see something through that adorable little scrying spell you've been trying to loop around the box for the last three blocks?"

Marina let out a dry, sharp chuckle. "When did you notice my snooping?"

"Right from the moment the idea spun in your mind, my foxy darling," Kai said, stopping to look directly into her radiant, deceptive blue eyes. "Your magical signature has a very specific flavor of 'desperate curiosity' when you're trying to peek behind the curtain."

"So, are you going to tell me or what?" she asked, unfazed.

"Hoo! Are you pretending you don't have an idea what I could possibly be after in this region?" Kai asked, throwing his arms out wide to gesture at the skyline. "I'm looking for the glitch in the matrix. The one person who doesn't realize they're holding the remote control to the universe."

They reached the Eastern section of the docks, where a man in a weather-beaten jacket was securing a skiff. Kai stopped, a mischievous light dancing in his eyes.

"Hey! Bluebeard! Looking sharp! Is the 'mid-life crisis at sea' look back in style, or are you just auditioning for a gritty reboot of The Little Mermaid?"

The man froze, looking between Kai's manic grin and Marina's 'I-don't-know-this-man' expression. "Uh... what?"

Kai rolled his eyes dramatically. "I'm here for my mistress, of course. Harold, come on, try to keep up. I don't have all day to explain the plot to the extras."

The man's jaw dropped. "How... how do you know my name?"

Kai took a bite of an apple that came out of nowhere, chewing thoughtfully before answering. "I'm in the business of having scripted knowledge on all things in existence, Harold. It's a burden, really. I've already read your biography, spoiler alert: the ending is a bit of a damp squib."

Both Harold and Marina stared at him in total, baffled silence.

"What?" Kai asked, looking between them. "Is it the apple? Does it make me look too much like a villain? I can switch to a pear if it helps with the tone."

Marina rubbed her temples, looking at the man in the weather-beaten jacket. "Is everyone in your life a walking pun, Kai? Or is the universe just having a laugh at our expense?"

Kai ignored her, stepping forward with a theatrical flourish. "Marina, meet Harold. Harold, meet Marina. Harold here is, wait for it… Harold the Herald of the East River Dragon. I know, I know, the naming conventions in this is a bit on the nose, but what can you do? Creativity is a finite resource."

Marina stared at the man. "You're actually called Harold the Herald?"

The man straightened his shoulders and nodded with a solemn, slightly pained expression. "Yes. I have served the Lady of the East for twenty years."

"Right, right," Kai interrupted, clapping his hands together. "Tradition is lovely, but we're here to see the big fish. We've come to see the Lady of the East River. We have business with the Ancient One you see in here to propose a little exchange, a humble tit-for-tat that I think will leave her feeling quite... exalted."

Harold didn't move. He looked at the box under Kai's arm with professional suspicion. "And you are?"

"Me? I'm just a humble and harmless magician," Kai lied, his eyes twinkling with enough mischief to power a small city. "A simple traveler of the multiverse here to offer a gift that will undoubtedly please your mistress. Think of me as a magical door-to-door salesman, but with better hair and significantly more power."

"I need to see the item," Harold stated firmly. "Nothing reaches the Lady without me ensuring it is safe for her presence. For all I know, you've got a void-bomb in there."

Marina let out a heavy sigh, shifting her weight. "Look, we don't have all day for—"

"Hmmmm, okay then," Kai chirped, cutting her off. He stepped into Harold's personal space with a sharp, delighted smile on his face. "If you must have a peek, who am I to deny the Herald his due diligence?"

Kai tilted the box toward Harold and cracked the lid just a few inches. A soft, otherworldly glow spilled out, illuminating Harold's face. The man's eyes widened to the size of dinner plates.

"Ohhh," Harold breathed, his voice trembling. "Wait... isn't that...?"

As Marina tried to crane her neck to see over Kai's shoulder, he snapped the box shut with a violent thud.

"Not for your eyes yet, foxy," Kai teased. He looked at Harold and then back at the river, adopting a sudden, swaying posture and a slurred, gravelly lilt. "I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request. Means 'no'!"

The reference landed with a thud. Both Marina and Harold blinked at him in total, baffled silence.

"What the hell was that?" Marina asked, looking at him like he'd finally sprouted a second head. "Did you just have a stroke, or is the 'god-level entity' finally losing its marbles?"

Kai paused, dropping the act and looking genuinely contemplative for half a second. "Is that how people see me? As a delusional magician with a flair for the dramatic?"

Marina gave him a long, flat, 'seriously' look that spoke volumes.

"Right," Kai muttered, adjusting his box. "Okay. Point taken. Back to the 'mysterious and terrifying' vibe then. Harold, lead the way before I decide to turn you into a literal herald-pigeon."

———

"Hey, Quentin! Heads up!" Poppy chirped.

"Wait, wha—"

Before Quentin could process the trajectory, Poppy flicked a small, foil-wrapped object toward him. Instinctively, Quentin reached out to catch it, but his other hand was already being occupied by Poppy, who lunged forward and pressed the Fourth Key into his palm while his brain was still focused on the snack.

"Cookies in the jar, Q! If you reach for the snickerdoodle, you get the gold!" Poppy shouted, leaping backward with a look of pure, unadulterated relief.

The gray, moping apparition that had been hovering over her vanished instantly.

"What the fuck did you just do?" Penny barked, as he rushed to them with a bewildered look. He looked like he was prepared to tackle someone… he wasn't sure who yet.

"Relax!" Poppy said, stretching her arms over her head as if she'd just finished a spa day. "He'll be fine. He's all sunshine, rainbows, and repressed whimsy. What could possibly go wrong? It's like giving a loaded gun to a puppy. Actually, wait, that's a bad metaphor."

Alice's eyes went cold as she saw the key on her lover's hand and then back at Poppy. She began to trace a complex kinetic bind in the air, "Take it back, Poppy. Now."

Kady stepped in between them, putting a hand on Alice's shoulder. "Whoa, whoa. Calm down. Let's not lose our cool over a little light psychological warfare."

"Ohh," Penny muttered, his eyes widening as he stared at the space just behind Quentin's left shoulder.

Quentin, feeling a sudden, icy chill that felt like a breakup in physical form, slowly turned his head. "Shit."

Standing there was a version of Quentin that looked completely stoic and with a look of apathy that shocked Penny.

"Yup," Shadow-Quentin rasped. "You definitely are a shit-stain, aren't you? Look at you. Standing there with your mouth open like a confused goldfish. You're the human equivalent of a participation trophy."

"God damn, right off the bat and on sight," Penny whispered, leaning in. "You had this inside of you all along? This guy is savage."

"What is happening?" Alice asked, her voice trembling. "It's the dark me," Quentin groaned, clutching the key. "He's... he's very vocal."

Poppy leaned against the mast, looking amused. "Is he saying the stuff about the deep-seated inadequacy yet? That's usually the opening act."

Kady, who couldn't see the ghost, looked at Quentin's pained expression and stepped forward. "Quentin, give me the key. I can handle a little trash talk."

"Uh, no," Quentin said, pulling his hand away. "He's already talking about my third-grade talent show failure. You don't want this."

"Give it to me," Alice demanded, reaching out.

At that exact moment, the Shadow-Quentin leaned into Quentin's ear, loud enough for Penny to catch every word. "Oh, please. Give it to her. Let her see what a failure you are compared to the competition. I'm fairly certain you've noticed how Alicia barely looks at you twice since arriving from that alternate world and she got with Kai."

Penny's jaw dropped. "Oh shit."

"I mean, think about it," the Shadow-Quentin continued with a venomous smirk. "She was with the other you, the one with the library and the tragic hero complex and now she's with a god-tier sociopath. She can't even look at this version of you without laughing inwardly. I can only come down to one simple conclusion, Q."

"Stop it," Quentin whimpered.

"He's got a bigger and better dick," the apparition whispered loudly. "He probably fucks her better than the alternate you ever did. Which makes me wonder... does she tell your Alice about it? And if she does, do you think Alice is thinking about that right now while she looks at your sad, magical-stuttering self?"

"Damn!" Penny shouted, actually recoiling. "Okay, Q, do NOT listen to the freaky shadow! That was a low blow! That was beneath the belt! Literally!"

Penny turned to the empty air where the shadow stood and pointed aggressively. "Shut up, you budget-brand Hot Topic nightmare! Nobody asked you!"

Poppy blinked, looking at Penny's visible distress. "Wow... is it that bad?"

Penny looked at her, then back at the Shadow-Quentin, who was now critiquing Quentin's choice of vest. "What do you think? It's like being roasted by a ghost who has access to your browser history and your deepest insecurities. This is a nightmare!"
