Chapter 31 - : Echoes of the Truth

Friday, 8:10 A.M.

The morning sun spilled across the polished floors of Steel Medical Center, bathing the quiet corridors in a warm golden glow.

The hospital had awakened hours before the city.

Doctors hurried toward operating rooms with patient files tucked beneath their arms. Nurses exchanged reports as they changed shifts, while volunteers decorated the pediatric ward with colorful paper flowers for the upcoming Community Hope Luncheon.

To anyone else...

It was another ordinary morning.

But to Celina...

Nothing felt ordinary anymore.

The moment she stepped through the hospital entrance, she sensed the difference.

A few colleagues greeted her as they always had.

Others smiled politely before lowering their voices.

She caught fragments as she walked past.

"Is that her?"

"The woman from the article?"

"She doesn't look like someone chasing a billionaire..."

"Appearances can be deceiving."

Celina lowered her eyes.

Her fingers tightened around the handle of her cleaning cart.

For a brief moment, she considered turning around.

Going home.

Hiding until the whispers disappeared.

Then she remembered Aaron's words from the previous afternoon.

"Don't read the comments."

"What matters... is whether you know the truth."

A slow breath escaped her lips.

He was right.

She couldn't control what strangers believed.

But she could choose how she carried herself.

Lifting her chin, she continued down the corridor with quiet determination.

High above the hospital...

Aaron stood inside his office overlooking the city of Rosewood.

The skyline shimmered beneath the morning light, but he hardly noticed it.

His desk was covered with reports awaiting his approval.

Normally...

Every document would already bear his signature.

Today...

He had been staring at the same page for nearly ten minutes.

A soft knock broke the silence.

"Come in."

Ethan Brooks entered carrying a tablet.

"The Communications Department has prepared an official response to yesterday's article."

Aaron accepted it.

His eyes skimmed the statement.

"Steel Global Holdings does not comment on speculation regarding the private lives of its executives. Our commitment remains focused on healthcare, innovation, and community service."

Simple.

Professional.

Appropriate.

"Release it."

"Yes, sir."

Ethan hesitated before speaking again.

"There is one more issue."

Aaron looked up.

"The Board has expressed concern."

"About?"

"The publicity surrounding Miss Bakers."

Aaron's expression remained calm.

"Our quarterly profits increased by twenty-two percent."

"Yes."

"Our hospitals continue to expand."

"They do."

"Our foundation has helped more children this year than any year before."

"Correct."

Aaron folded his hands.

"Then tell the Board to focus on matters that actually affect the company."

Ethan smiled faintly.

"I suspected that would be your answer."

He turned to leave.

"Ethan."

He stopped.

"Find out who leaked the photograph."

Ethan's expression immediately became serious.

"You believe it wasn't accidental?"

Aaron looked toward the city beyond the glass.

"I've spent years negotiating with people who smile while hiding their intentions."

His voice remained even.

"I no longer believe in coincidences."

Meanwhile...

The pediatric ward echoed with cheerful laughter.

Daniel carefully balanced a blue block on top of a tiny wooden building.

"It needs a bridge," he announced.

"And trees," Lily added.

Celina smiled as she knelt beside them.

"Every good city needs a place where children can play."

Daniel nodded enthusiastically.

"And ice cream!"

She laughed softly.

"I suppose that's essential."

Before she could add another block...

A familiar voice spoke behind her.

"Planning another masterpiece?"

The children turned immediately.

"Mr. Steel!"

Aaron had arrived with Director James Sullivan.

Daniel ran over carrying a handful of wooden trees.

"You have to help!"

Aaron accepted one without hesitation.

"And where does this belong?"

The children began talking all at once.

"No! Beside the school!"

"Next to the hospital!"

"Put it by the park!"

Aaron looked toward Celina.

"I assume you're in charge."

She smiled.

"I've learned it's impossible to win an argument with architects under ten."

A quiet laugh escaped him.

Director James watched silently.

The sound was brief.

Almost imperceptible.

Yet it was genuine.

He couldn't remember the last time he'd seen Aaron smile without forcing it.

People often changed because of power.

Or loss.

Aaron...

Seemed to be changing because of kindness.

As the children became absorbed in their miniature city once more...

Aaron turned to Celina.

"Miss Bakers."

She looked up.

"Would you join me for a moment?"

She nodded.

"Of course."

Together, they stepped into the hospital courtyard.

The gentle sound of water trickled from the stone fountain.

White roses swayed in the morning breeze, filling the air with their delicate fragrance.

For several moments...

Neither of them spoke.

The silence felt strangely comforting.

Aaron was the first to break it.

"How are you?"

She understood immediately.

"You mean... after yesterday?"

He nodded.

She smiled faintly.

"It wasn't easy."

"I won't pretend otherwise."

She looked toward the roses.

"When people don't know you..."

"It's amazing how quickly they decide who you are."

Aaron listened without interrupting.

"But then I remembered something my mother used to tell me."

"What was that?"

Celina's eyes softened.

"A flower doesn't stop blooming because someone refuses to see its beauty."

She smiled.

"So... neither should I."

Aaron held her gaze.

There was no bitterness.

No anger.

Only quiet resilience.

For reasons he couldn't explain...

He admired her more with each passing day.

Not because she was extraordinary in the eyes of the world.

But because she remained kind...

Even when the world wasn't kind to her.

He drew a slow breath.

"I'm sorry."

She blinked.

"For what?"

"You became part of this because of me."

She shook her head gently.

"No."

"I accepted your invitation because I wanted to."

"And despite everything..."

"I don't regret it."

For the first time in a long while...

Aaron found himself unable to answer immediately.

Business negotiations had never left him searching for words.

Yet one sincere sentence from her...

Silenced him.

Just then...

Emily appeared at the entrance to the courtyard.

"There you are!"

She slowed, suddenly aware she had interrupted something.

"I'm sorry."

She handed a cream-colored envelope to Celina.

"The Foundation Committee asked me to give you this."

Curious, Celina opened it.

Inside was an elegant invitation embossed with the Steel Foundation seal.

Community Hope Luncheon

She looked at Aaron.

"I've never attended one of these."

"I know."

His voice remained calm.

"This year..."

"I'd like you to attend as my guest."

The courtyard fell silent.

Celina stared at the invitation resting in her hands.

She understood what accepting would mean.

More whispers.

More photographs.

More people judging a story they didn't know.

Slowly...

She lifted her eyes to meet his.

"Are you certain?"

Aaron didn't hesitate.

"I don't make invitations I don't mean."

His answer was simple.

Steady.

Certain.

For the first time since the rumors had begun...

Celina realized something.

Aaron Steel wasn't standing beside her because he felt obligated.

He wasn't trying to repair his reputation.

He simply...

Wanted her beside him.

And somehow...

That thought made her heart beat just a little faster.

As neither of them noticed...

From the second-floor balcony overlooking the courtyard...

A woman stood silently behind the glass.

Evelyn Monroe.

Her eyes rested on Aaron...

Then shifted to Celina.

A thoughtful smile touched her lips.

"So..."

She whispered to herself.

"This is the woman who changed you."

The breeze carried away her words.

Unheard by the two people below.

But fate...

Had already begun weaving another thread into their story.
