Chapter 27 - A Place in His World

Three days passed after the charity gala.

Although life at Steel Medical Center returned to normal, whispers about the event had not completely disappeared.

Some staff members still spoke about the mysterious woman who had accompanied Aaron Steel.

Most never realized...

She was quietly mopping the same corridors they walked through every day.

Celina preferred it that way.

She had never wanted attention.

She only wanted peace.

Late Wednesday morning...

The aroma of freshly baked bread drifted from the hospital cafeteria.

Celina smiled as she entered the kitchen carrying a small basket.

Chef Marco looked up.

"Miss Celina!"

"You came early today."

She held up the basket.

"I promised Daniel I'd bake him cinnamon rolls."

The elderly chef laughed.

"And you still insist on using my kitchen instead of letting me make them."

Celina smiled.

"He says mine taste better."

Marco placed a hand dramatically over his heart.

"I've been insulted in my own kitchen."

Both of them laughed.

An hour later...

The pediatric ward was filled with the sweet scent of warm pastries.

Daniel's eyes sparkled.

"You really made them!"

"I always keep my promises."

She placed one on a small plate before checking with the nurse.

"Is he allowed to have one?"

The nurse nodded.

"Just one."

Daniel took a bite.

His face lit up immediately.

"This is the best thing I've ever eaten!"

The other children looked at him with envy.

Celina laughed.

"I knew this would happen."

She broke the remaining pastries into smaller pieces.

"Looks like everyone gets a taste."

Soon, the room was filled with smiling children.

Even the nurses accepted a piece.

The warmth of the moment spread through the ward.

Just outside the room...

Aaron had arrived for another inspection.

He paused when the sweet aroma reached him.

"What is that smell?"

James smiled knowingly.

"Follow it."

Aaron walked toward the pediatric ward.

The first thing he heard was laughter.

The second...

Was Daniel's excited voice.

"Miss Celina should open a bakery!"

Aaron stepped inside.

The children immediately noticed him.

"Mr. Steel!"

Daniel held up a cinnamon roll.

"You have to try one!"

Celina looked slightly embarrassed.

"Oh..."

"You don't have to."

Aaron looked at the pastry.

Then at Daniel's hopeful face.

"I don't think I have much choice."

The room erupted with laughter.

Aaron accepted the pastry and took a small bite.

The cinnamon melted gently on his tongue.

It wasn't overly sweet.

It wasn't complicated.

It simply tasted...

Comforting.

Unexpectedly comforting.

Daniel watched anxiously.

"Well?"

Aaron nodded once.

"I understand now."

Daniel grinned.

"I told you!"

Aaron looked at Celina.

"You're very talented."

A faint blush touched her cheeks.

"It's just baking."

He shook his head.

"No."

"It isn't."

"You have a way of making people feel cared for."

The room fell unusually quiet.

Even Emily looked up from the patient chart she was holding.

Celina lowered her eyes, suddenly unsure how to respond.

No one had ever described her that way before.

That afternoon...

Aaron stood in his office overlooking the hospital gardens.

His thoughts kept returning to the pediatric ward.

Not to the cinnamon roll.

To Celina.

The way she remembered every child's favorite food.

The way she noticed when someone was lonely.

The way she made ordinary moments feel special.

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.

"Come in."

Ethan entered with a folder.

"Sir, these are the final candidates for the Community Hope Project."

Aaron accepted the file absentmindedly.

The project selected one local resident each year to receive funding to pursue a dream that benefited the community.

Ethan hesitated.

"Is something wrong?"

Aaron closed the folder.

"Tell me something, Ethan."

"Yes, sir?"

"If someone wanted to open a small restaurant..."

"...one that served families who couldn't afford expensive meals..."

"...would that qualify?"

Ethan blinked.

"It certainly would."

A slow smile spread across his face.

"Are we speaking about Miss Bakers?"

Aaron remained silent.

That silence...

Was answer enough.

Ethan couldn't hide his grin.

For the first time in years...

Aaron Steel wasn't thinking about expanding an empire.

He was thinking about helping someone build a dream.

Outside the office window, Celina could be seen crossing the hospital courtyard, unaware that someone was quietly beginning to believe in her future...

Almost as much as she did.
