Just as Selene and Nas were bracing themselves for either a fight or inevitable memory erasure, something unexpected happened—the black-armored soldiers simply ignored them. After finishing the memory-wiping process for the nearby civilians at the subway turnstiles, the soldiers walked past Selene and Nas without even sparing them a second glance, heading deeper into the station.
Nas turned his head to watch the departing soldiers, fear evident on his face. He whispered to Selene, "We need to leave now, Selene. We must inform Kraven and have him contact Elder Amelia immediately. Humans are no longer prey we can hunt at will."
Selene, already realizing the gravity of the situation, nodded quickly. She grabbed Nas's arm, hoisting him onto her shoulder, and began moving toward the subway exit.
"Wait," Nas said suddenly as they emerged from the station. His expression was troubled. "Selene, it seems something major has changed among the humans. Those soldiers were clearly here to deal with the werewolves. Drop me off at the car; I'll return to the estate on my own."
"No way," Selene shot back. "That's suicidal, Nas."
Nas grabbed her arm, his grip firm despite his weakened state. "Didn't you notice their attitude toward us? They didn't see us as a threat—for now. You need to figure out what's happening. And consider this: if they're deploying so many mech soldiers, it means the werewolf numbers must be significant.
"You have to understand, Selene. For the past two centuries, we've operated under the assumption that we've almost wiped out the werewolves. But this… this proves otherwise."
Nas's voice turned grave as he continued, "And remember, in just a few days, it'll be the transition of power—Elder Amelia going into her slumber, and Elder Marcus awakening. We need to gather as much intelligence about the humans and the werewolves as possible to make decisions that benefit our clan."
Selene hesitated for a moment but had to admit Nas was right. After a brief pause, she relented. "Are you sure you can make it back? Otherwise, stay in the car and call for nearby hunters to pick you up."
"I'll be fine. Go, Selene. Quickly," Nas urged.
After helping Nas into the car, Selene armed herself from the trunk, taking note of how strange it was that, even after five or six minutes, no police officers had shown up. However, thinking back to the mech soldiers, it no longer seemed surprising.
She swiftly returned to the subway station and descended the stairs, arriving at the platform where the black-armored soldiers were guarding the tunnel.
The leader of the group, as if expecting her return, pointed to a weapons crate nearby and gestured for her to take it before turning his attention back to the tunnel.
A low wolf's howl echoed from within the tunnel.
Seeing the soldiers' focus shift toward the sound, Selene approached the crate. The emblem on the crate caught her eye: a crowned deer head with ten branching antlers.
The emblem stirred a vague sense of familiarity in her, though she couldn't immediately recall which family it belonged to.
Opening the crate, she found a rifle identical to those carried by the black-armored soldiers. She noticed the engraving "M416" near the rifle's chamber.
Another wolf's howl interrupted her thoughts. Without wasting any more time, Selene shrugged off her leather coat and quickly donned a tactical vest. She grabbed a handful of magazines filled with silver liquid bullets, loaded her weapon, and sprinted into the tunnel.
After running about 100 meters, she entered a side maintenance room that led into another section of the subway tunnels. Proceeding cautiously, she soon heard the unmistakable sounds of wolf howls and gunfire.
Along the way, she encountered and eliminated two werewolves before arriving at a massive, abandoned underground structure. Peering over the edge of a wall, she saw the three silver-armored figures she'd encountered earlier. They were systematically slaughtering every werewolf in sight with impressive coordination.
Selene watched in astonishment as one of them—the one with rotary machine guns mounted on both wrists—completely disregarded defense. He charged directly into the middle of a group of werewolves, spinning his body as he fired in all directions.
By the time he completed two full rotations, at least five werewolves lay riddled with bullets. A clicking sound signaled that his guns were out of ammunition, but within seconds, the ammo box on his back automatically reloaded his weapons.
Once reloaded, he resumed firing, gunning down any werewolf in his path with bursts of rapid fire.
Meanwhile, Laura covered his rear, her dual pistols taking out any werewolves attempting to flank him.
Though Selene was impressed by the firepower and defensive capabilities of the armored suits, what truly shocked her was the third figure—Wesley—who was positioned in the shadows.
In just a matter of seconds, Wesley's shots had taken out multiple targets with surgical precision. Most of his kills were headshots, followed by two rapid shots to the heart. Even more terrifying were the occasional curved bullets he fired, bending around obstacles to hit their marks.
"Curved bullets?" Selene muttered under her breath. Closing her eyes, she replayed the scene in her mind. After just a few seconds, she confirmed it: the bullets could indeed curve mid-flight.
Realizing that she herself would likely be unable to evade such bullets in a similar scenario, Selene cursed under her breath.
"F***, F***, when did humans become such monsters?"
For a brief moment, she considered joining the fight to assist the soldiers. But the more she thought about it, the more she decided against it. Instead, she remained hidden, silently observing as the three armored figures continued their massacre of the werewolves.
She couldn't help but hope that they'd run out of ammunition soon—or, better yet, end up dying alongside the werewolves.
Unfortunately for Selene, that hope was quickly dashed.
As the battle dragged on for several minutes, Selene noticed the gunfire starting to wane. Just as she thought the armored soldiers might be running low on ammo, a low humming noise filled the air.
She turned her head and saw ten drones flying into the underground structure. The drones scattered, each dropping a small crate the size of a briefcase near the soldiers.
Eggsy's ammo box automatically detached from his back. He rolled to the nearest crate, leaned against it for cover, and quickly reloaded.
Moments later, he was back on the move, gunning down the werewolves chasing him. Each time his ammo ran out, he repeated the process, always staying one step ahead of his pursuers.
In no time, seven of the crates had been used to restock Eggsy's ammunition. Wesley took two crates, and Laura claimed one.
Watching this unfold, Laura couldn't help but think to herself that after this mission, she really needed to learn better marksmanship—perhaps from Wesley or Fox. She dismissed the idea of learning from Eggsy with a scoff, thinking, Sure, his dual machine guns are impressive, but look at the kill count on my helmet display.
Wesley had already racked up 47 kills, while Eggsy had only managed 36. However, seeing her own count of just 22, Laura felt a pang of frustration.
Still, a nagging thought crept into her mind: Why are there so many werewolves? We've almost killed a hundred, but they just keep coming. Why won't they run out?
Moments later, yet another wave of werewolves arrived as reinforcements. Laura couldn't help but wonder if she and her teammates were just bait in some grand scheme of William's—designed to lure out every werewolf in the underground network.
"That bastard," she muttered to herself.
