Walking to school in the morning felt the same regardless of the location or reputation of it. It would always feel bothersome.
Luckily, most people stayed on campus so Alix could enjoy a quiet morning. After an hour of walking she arrived back at those glorious school gates. Alix walked through and headed in the direction of the Martial University.
'Our first objective of the day is to try to transfer to the Spellcaster University. I did not come here to sweat all day with a bunch of children that wish to run around in armor that will rust faster than they can make a name for themselves."
'Where did you pull that from? Besides, they could have saved a few people just after breakfast. Would that not make a name for them before they even put on armor?" Alix cast a disapproving glare at Mo.
'It is highly unlikely that anyone attending any university is already a adventurer let alone be a hero. You always say the most uselessly positive things." Mo shrugged.
'Just food for thought. Anyway, do ya even know where the head of your uni's office is?"
'I'll figure it out." Mo turned to Trouler with concern. Trouler noticed his gaze and hopped in excitement. Mo exhaled somberly.
'We always just figure it out, Lexi.' Alix entered the martial academy and began to wander the halls. Though they were more like pathways than halls as much of the building seemed to be outdoors.
For example, there was no roof. Just very tall cinderblock walls with most having entryways without actual doors. Even the few that had doors only led to large training fields of various sizes that were incased by more walls.
Alix couldn't help but be confused. Why was this place made this way? She was not the only one with this question as several other new students were also shocked by the construction of the school.
"What is up with this place? It feels more like a Labyrinth-type dungeon than a school!"
"Do you think the other facilities are like this as well? I could see it with the spellcasters but not so much for the business vocations."
"Maybe they're scared that we'd make a mess of a normal building! Martial vocations do have quite the rep. Like this one time, my dad-"
The students continued to discuss the building in awe while Alix struggled to find the principle's office. After all...
...there weren't really any office's outside.
After wandering for a meaningless amount of time she asked one of the wandering teachers to lead her to the principle.
"Why do you need him? Did something happen?"
"I have some grievances about my appointment in the Martial path."
"What grievances?" Alix reached in her bag and pulled out her final free spell catalyst.
"I am a sorceress. I do not belong in this school with these idiots that couldn't tell the difference between Magecraft and Spirit Savantry." The teacher nodded.
"That does seem to be a problem. I'll to take you to Vance right away." The teacher waved for Alix to follow and led her to the man that put her in this in the position in the first place.
The person led her to the only wall here not made of cinderblock. It seemed to be made of some sort of dark metal instead. It's construction was similar to that of the training rooms that Alix passed on the way here but this seemed far more reinforced.
"This is the place. His office, of sorts." Alix nodded and walked over to the door. When she got close she felt a powerful energy from the other side. This shocked her as she hadn't even opened the door yet.
'How strong is that man?' Alix cleared her throat and moved to knock on the door. Just as her hand was going to make contact, however, it swung open with Vance Warren standing there staring at her.
"The first year classes should be taking place at training field one. I keep telling those guys to stop letting-" Vance stopped his rant when he noticed that it was Alix standing at the door.
"Oh, Alix Ren. Why are you at my personal training room?" Vance turned to the teacher that led Alix but they simply gestured at the girl.
"You have made a grave error sir." Vance raised one of his eyebrows.
"I have?" Alix nodded vehemently. "I'm sorry, but what would that error be?" Vance stood worried. Had he made some sort of mistake?
"You've assigned me to the incorrect path!" Vance exhaled as he released the tension in his body. "Oh thank Krux, it's just one of you." Alix frowned.
"I fail to understand the meaning behind your reaction." Vance realized what he had done and wave his hands in a panic.
"Wait wait wait!! I didn't mean any disrespect to ya kid!" Alix glared at the man but waited for him to continue. Vance sighed.
"Every year there's always a couple of students that disagree with the results of the test and refute their path placing. However, we principles rarely mistake the talent that we see within students. My reaction was based on the fact that I know that you have a talent for the Martial path. I have no doubt you were placed correctly."
"That test was flawed from the start! What in the world could have been the point of attacking me while I was gathering mana!"
"It was to see how you would react to sudden danger. You see, it's during those moments that I've discovered many people's true abilities even while on the battlefield."
"Yeah but-"
"A spellcaster would have activated a defense spell. A person that's just looking for a job would have gotten socked right in the gut or face! While those that walk the Martial path would block or counter. You dodged, countered and then proceeded to continue the attack. Where do you think that places your instincts?"
Alix stood in silence. Now that she understood the man's testing methods her placing made more sense. 'Darn it, mom! You imbedded martial arts too deeply into my body!'
"Besides I knew you were a martial artist before you even took the test." Alix looked at the man shocked. "How'd you know?"
"Your name. You're the daughter of Sala Ren right?" Alix groaned in understanding.
"If anyone was going to know my mother it was going to be the principle of the Martial University." Vance nodded.
"I actually hold a lot of respect for your mother. She left pretty soon after my enrollment in the knights but I had always heard many stories about her achievements. And your skill level makes me wonder just what kind of monster she is now." Alix was frustrated.
Her mother's influence ran deeper than she knew.
"Is there any chance that I can still transfer paths? I've been practicing sorcery ever since I was a little girl. Magic is my passion! I can not just give it up because I have talent in martial arts."
Vance shook his head apologetically. "I'm sorry but your skill earned you the A-class ranking. It's a school policy that anyone B-class or above in their current path can not change unless their rank falls." Alix's eyes lit up. A sinister smirk arose on her face.
Warren felt a chill run down his spine.
"So I am too talented for my own good. Then I apologize for interrupting your training Sir Warren. I will be on my way." Alix turned on her heels and walked away from the room with her monsters in tow.
Monsters.
"Oh wait! I forgot to mention!" Alix turned to the man as he rushed over. "You have a required extra-curricular. It's the Monster Research class led by Ex-Magister Inengway. There should be someone to lead you there after your first class of today." Alix nodded.
She knew Inengway had planned on teaching here, though she was slightly surprised to discover that his class was required for her. 'Oh well, I would have applied for it regardless.' With that Alix asked her guide to take her to the first-year class and left.
Vance stood there feeling very uncomfortable.
"Did I do something wrong again?"
