Chapter 7 - Grandpa *

The peaceful rhythm of rural village life continued smoothly into the late afternoon hours. The morning breakfast challenge had officially concluded, and the energetic production crew had already begun setting up lighting and audio gear for the evening segment.

Cameras were being carefully repositioned along the edges of the irrigation fields while assistants hustled back and forth between technical tents. Amidst the bustling commotion across the set, Sylvaniah suddenly found herself gifted with an unexpected hour of downtime.

A junior production assistant approached her workstation, offering a polite bow and a small smile.

"Miss Sylvaniah, the executive director has granted you brief permission to leave the main set for a short while," the assistant informed her in a low, respectful tone. "A private guest is currently waiting for your arrival nearby."

Sylvaniah blinked in mild surprise, pausing as she wiped down her wooden counter.

"Someone is here to see me?" she asked, tilting her head in curiosity.

"Yes, Miss," the assistant confirmed with a quick nod. "The visitor specifically requested complete privacy away from the broadcast cameras."

Intrigued by the unexpected visit, Sylvaniah politely excused herself from the surrounding production crew before following the young staff member down a narrow dirt path. The trail led away from the bustling village square, winding toward a quiet paved road shaded by ancient, sprawling trees.

Parked discreetly beneath the lush canopy of an old acacia tree sat a sleek, luxurious black sedan. Its immaculate, polished frame attracted immediate attention despite the absolute absence of any visible family crest or corporate logo.

The moment Sylvaniah approached the vehicle, a middle-aged chauffeur wearing crisp white gloves stepped forward and opened the rear passenger door with a low bow.

"Good afternoon, Miss Dreraye," the driver greeted her warmly.

Sylvaniah's face instantly brightened as she recognized the familiar, elegant lines of her family's private automobile. She offered the driver a quiet greeting before stepping inside the plush, leather-appointed cabin.

The sedan glided silently down the rural road, traveling only a short distance before turning onto a hidden stone driveway. The path led directly toward a secluded countryside inn nestled deep among towering groves of emerald bamboo.

Unlike the noisy, crowded atmosphere of the filming village, this traditional establishment was wrapped in absolute, serene stillness. There was not a single tourist or local resident in sight across the pristine grounds.

The head receptionist bowed deeply from the waist the moment the vehicle came to a smooth halt near the entry steps.

"Welcome back, Miss Dreraye," the receptionist announced respectfully, gesturing toward the private inner courtyard.

Sylvaniah immediately understood the situation, a soft chuckle escaping her lips as she smoothed down her linen dress. Her grandfather had undeniably rented out the entire luxury resort for the afternoon simply to enjoy a cup of tea in peace.

She shook her head in fond amusement, stepping out onto the stone walkway.

He really did not need to reserve the whole estate, she thought, her lips curving into a gentle smile.

Deep inside the private courtyard, an elderly gentleman sat comfortably beneath a hand-carved wooden pavilion overlooking a crystal-clear koi pond. The bright afternoon light filtered through the bamboo leaves, casting shifting patterns across the polished timber table.

Grandfather Dreraye looked up from his steaming porcelain teacup as the soft sound of footsteps announced her arrival.

"There you are, my dear," he called out softly, his weathered features instantly softening into a radiant smile. He set his cup down on the saucer, his sharp eyes examining her frame carefully. "You have lost weight again."

Sylvaniah let out a helpless laugh, stepping under the shade of the pavilion roof. "Why does everyone in this family keep saying that exact same line to me?"

"Because it happens to be the absolute truth," the old patriarch insisted, gesturing toward the empty woven chair situated directly across from him. "Come, sit down with me."

She obediently took her seat, breathing in the soothing aroma of freshly brewed jasmine tea. Before she could even reach for the antique teapot to serve herself, her grandfather had already lifted the handle and poured a golden stream into her cup.

"I heard through the grapevine that you have been displaying your culinary talents to the entire nation," he remarked casually, a mischievous glint dancing in his warm eyes.

Sylvaniah paused mid-sip, her hazel eyes widening in mild shock. "So even you have heard about the breakfast challenge already?"

"The village master chef actually called my private residence personally," Grandfather Dreraye revealed with a soft nod.

Sylvaniah nearly choked on her tea, setting the delicate cup down with a light clatter against the saucer. "He... he called you directly?"

The old gentleman nodded calmly, taking another slow sip of his tea. "He informed me that my dear granddaughter managed to thoroughly humiliate several arrogant city cooks using simple wild herbs."

Sylvaniah covered her blushing face with both hands, groaning softly in embarrassment. "Grandpa, please..."

Grandfather Dreraye let out a deep, hearty laugh that echoed pleasantly across the quiet courtyard pond. "I must admit, I have never felt prouder of your stubborn nature."

For a long while, neither of them spoke another word. Instead, they simply sat together in comfortable tranquility, watching the colorful koi fish glide beneath the lily pads while enjoying the crisp mountain breeze.

The absolute stillness between them was deeply comforting, entirely free of the awkwardness or tension that often plagued wealthy households. They shared an unspoken understanding that required no constant chatter to maintain.

Eventually, the old patriarch set his cup down and looked at her with gentle, searching eyes.

"Tell me truthfully, Sylvaniah," he began softly, resting his wrinkled hands on his wooden cane. "Are you happy with the life you are living right now?"

Sylvaniah turned her gaze toward the distant, mist-shrouded mountain peaks framing the countryside horizon.

"I think I truly am," she admitted softly, her voice carrying a calm sincerity.

She leaned back against her chair, her fingers lightly tracing the edge of the bamboo table. "The work on set can be physically exhausting, and the general public still harbors deep misunderstandings about who I am."

She paused, a genuine, luminous smile slowly blooming across her face. "But despite all the noise... I still love the craft of acting with all my heart."

The old man's eyes softened with profound tenderness, a bittersweet expression crossing his face.

"I know you do," he replied softly, his voice dropping to a low register. "When you first stood in my study four years ago and declared your intention to join the entertainment world... I was terrified for you."

He shook his head slowly, remembering that difficult conversation. "It was not because I ever doubted your natural talent or intelligence, but because I knew firsthand how ruthless and unforgiving that industry could be to young women."

He reached across the small table, placing his warm, calloused palm gently over her slender hand.

"Even so, despite my fears... I chose to support your decision unconditionally," he reminded her softly.

Sylvaniah squeezed his wrinkled fingers, feeling a rush of deep gratitude toward the old patriarch who had raised her.

"I know you did," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion. "I have always known how much you sacrificed to protect my freedom."

She looked down at their joined hands, her thoughts drifting back to her initial debut. "If I had relied on our family's historic name or utilized your vast influence to pave my way, I would have spent my entire career trapped in doubt. I would never have known whether people genuinely appreciated my work... or if they were simply bowing to the Dreraye family name."

Grandfather Dreraye nodded proudly, his chest swelling with quiet affection.

"Precisely," he affirmed firmly. "That is the exact reason why I honored your request without hesitation."

He raised his chin slightly, listing her conditions. "No public introductions to high society, no televised family interviews, and zero corporate influence backing your auditions. You wanted to walk this difficult road entirely on your own strength, and you have done so with remarkable resilience."

His expression gradually shifted, taking on a far more serious, stern quality.

"Even when the entire country misunderstood your character and painted you as a villain... I never once regretted honoring our agreement," he declared with absolute conviction. "Because deep down in my heart, I always knew my granddaughter would eventually prove her true worth to the world."

Sylvaniah felt a familiar warmth sting behind her eyes, tears threatening to spill over her lashes.

"You have always possessed so much faith in me," she whispered, offering a misty smile.

"There was never a single reason in this world for me not to believe in you," he countered gently.

Sylvaniah stood up from her chair and walked around the table, wrapping her arms securely around his narrow shoulders in a warm embrace. The old man smiled softly, patting her hands with gentle, rhythmic strokes.

"My silly, stubborn girl," he murmured affectionately, closing his eyes.

Outside the timber pavilion, Evanesse stood quietly near the entrance of the bamboo garden, politely pretending to inspect the ornamental stone lanterns.

She had been invited earlier to join them for a private lunch, but she had discreetly stepped away to afford the patriarch and his granddaughter precious time alone.

A few minutes later, the family chauffeur walked onto the pavilion patio, offering a low bow.

"Master Dreraye, Miss Sylvaniah, the production team will be resuming primary camera operations shortly," he reported respectfully.

Grandfather Dreraye let out a soft sigh, offering a reluctant smile as he pat his granddaughter's arm.

"You had better head back to the village," he instructed gently. "If you are late for your call time, the program director will begin to fret."

Sylvaniah stepped back and nodded obediently. "I will come visit the main estate as soon as this season finishes filming."

"You had certainly better keep that promise," he warned playfully, waving his hand to dismiss her.

He stood near the edge of the pavilion, watching with quiet affection as the two young women walked down the garden path together. The luxury black sedan delivered them back to the quiet, tree-lined road situated just outside the village set.

Neither Sylvaniah nor Evanesse noticed a dirty utility van parked on the far side of the dirt road, where an independent freelance photographer sat in the driver's seat. The man happened to be adjusting his telephoto lens when his camera captured two distinct elements in high definition.

His lens recorded a pristine, unmarked black luxury sedan parked beneath the shade of the trees, alongside the clear image of Sylvaniah stepping out of the passenger door before quietly walking back toward the set.

By the time the photographer raised his camera a second time to capture the vehicle's license plate... the luxury sedan had already melted back into the main highway traffic.

Back inside the secluded countryside inn, the pleasant warmth gradually faded from Grandfather Dreraye's features. The soft, indulgent grandfatherly persona vanished entirely, replaced by the formidable aura of a seasoned patriarch.

He slowly rose from his wicker chair, his posture erect as he walked toward the open veranda overlooking the dense bamboo forest. He leaned lightly on his wooden walking cane, staring into the swaying green canopy.

Without turning his head or raising his voice, he spoke calmly into the silent afternoon air.

"Come forward," he commanded quietly.

In an instant, several nearly invisible figures emerged soundlessly from the deep shadows cast between the thick bamboo stalks. Five individuals stepped onto the stone patio, moving with terrifying fluidity and complete silence.

Each individual wore ordinary, nondescript civilian clothing that allowed them to blend effortlessly into any crowd. Yet, despite their plain attire, every person carried themselves with disciplined, lethal composure.

None of the figures uttered a single word, remaining bowed before the old man in absolute silence.

Grandfather Dreraye continued to gaze toward the distant village where his granddaughter was filming. His voice remained remarkably calm and gentle, yet every syllable carried an unquestionable, absolute authority that chilled the air.

"Protect my granddaughter at all costs," he ordered softly, his eyes narrowing slightly.

His gaze shifted toward the tree line, his tone turning even colder. "And ensure that Evanesse remains entirely unharmed throughout her stay as well."

The five hidden guards bowed in unison, their movements perfectly synchronized.

"Understood, Patriarch," they responded in a low, unified whisper.

Before the wind could even rustle the surrounding leaves again, the figures pushed off the stone floor and dissolved soundlessly back into the dense forest, leaving only the swaying bamboo behind in the afternoon sun.
