Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Solitude

‎The sun peeked through the drawn curtains of Lila Reyes's room, casting a soft glow on the cluttered desk that held the remnants of last night's caffeine-fueled coding marathon. Lines of code sprawled across her computer screen like a digital tapestry, each line a testament to her brilliance.

‎Lila was a wizard in the realm of programming, an artist painting with syntax and algorithms rather than brushes and colors. Yet, as she turned off her alarm, the excitement of her 20th birthday felt muted against the hum of her everyday life.

‎At Misamis Oriental Institute of Technology, where the air buzzed with youthful ambition and creativity, Lila felt like an outsider—a ghost haunting the edges of a vibrant party. She had friends, albeit a small circle, but her true passion lay in the digital world where she could communicate with code rather than the complex nuances of human interaction.

‎"Twenty," she murmured to herself, groaning. "Still a coding genius, still an introvert." She dragged herself out of bed and began her morning ritual: a shower to wash away the remnants of sleep, and a cup of coffee strong enough to power a small engine.

‎As she prepared to leave for class, her mind wandered back to the one person who managed to disrupt her carefully coded existence: Casey Monteverde. The golden girl of the campus, Casey was everything Lila was not. Stylish, charming, and effortlessly popular, she floated through the university's social scene like a bright comet streaking across a night sky.

‎ Their interactions were limited to brief exchanges in class, often laced with sarcasm and snarky remarks.

‎"Why does she have to be so... perfect?" Lila sighed as she slipped on her favorite hoodie, a garment that had seen better days but felt like armor against the world. She grabbed her laptop bag and headed out, her heart pounding in rhythm with her thoughts.

‎The campus was alive with chatter, laughter, and the unmistakable sound of heels clicking against the pavement. Lila maneuvered through the throng of students, her eyes cast downwards, focusing on the path ahead. She didn't notice Casey until she was nearly upon her, surrounded by a gaggle of admirers who hung on her every word.

‎"Look at that nerd," Casey teased, a playful smirk on her lips. "Probably coding her way to a social life." Lila felt her cheeks flush, anger bubbling beneath the surface.

‎"Just remember, it's not all about algorithms and coffee. Sometimes, you need a little flair. Touch some grass." With that, she flipped her hair over her shoulder and turned back to her friends, leaving Lila to grapple with her bubbling emotions.

‎The rest of the day passed in a haze of lectures and coding assignments, Lila's mind only half-focused on the task at hand.

‎As she sat in the campus café later that afternoon, she noticed a group of students gather around Casey's table, laughing and bubbling up like a chorus. Lila's heart ached at the sight. She wanted to be part of that world, to experience the thrill of friendship and connection, but the walls she had built around herself felt impenetrable.

‎Suddenly, a strange sensation washed over her, it was as if the air hummed with energy, the world around her fading into a blur. In that moment, she heard a voice, soft yet clear, breaking through the cacophony of noise.

‎"I wish she could see me for who I really am..."

‎"What the—?" Lila gasped, her surroundings snapping back into focus. It was Casey's voice, echoing in her mind as if she were standing right next to her.

‎Lila sat frozen in her seat, her heart racing as she grappled with the implications of her newfound ability. The café buzzed around her, but all she could focus on was that single thought she had intercepted from Casey.

‎"Lila?" a voice interrupted her swirling thoughts. It was Jenna, one of her closest friends and fellow coding enthusiasts. "Earth to Lila! You okay?"

‎Lila blinked, forcing a smile as she turned her attention to Jenna. "Yeah, just… thinking about an algorithm I'm working on for my project."

‎"Right, your favorite topic," Jenna teased, plopping down across from her. "Still, you look like you've seen a ghost. Or maybe you just realized you're turning twenty today!" She grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "We should celebrate, you know. C'mon, let's do something fun!"

‎Lila chuckled and waved her hand dismissively. "I'm fine. Really. Just not in the mood for a party."

‎"Seriously? You need to celebrate this milestone! Life's too short to sit at a café all day," Jenna insisted, her enthusiasm infectious. "What if we throw a small get-together? Just a few friends, some snacks, and maybe a gaming session? It'll be fun!"

‎Lila hesitated. The thought of being the center of attention made her stomach churn.

‎"Okay," Lila relented, the words spilling out before she could think them through. "A small get-together sounds fine. Just… not too many people, alright?"

‎"Deal!" Jenna beamed, her excitement palpable. "I'll handle the invites, and you can focus on your coding. Just promise me you'll have some fun, alright?"

‎"Yeah, I promise," Lila replied. The prospect of a celebration felt surreal, but perhaps it could also serve as a distraction.

‎As the afternoon faded into the evening, Lila found herself lost in her code once more, the rhythmic tapping of her fingers on the keyboard grounding her as she navigated the complexities of her project.

‎As the sun dipped below the horizon and the café emptied, Lila made her way back to her dorm, the weight of her thoughts pressing down on her. When she finally settled into bed that night, the glow of her laptop illuminating the dark room, Lila's mind was a whirlwind of possibilities.

‎ She resolved to keep her ability under wraps for now, to observe and learn as much as she could about Casey without revealing her secret. After all, the last thing she wanted was to be seen as a freak.
