Chapter 931 - 930-Why Wasn"t I Informed?

"You knew?" Renjiro's voice was flat, controlled, but there was an edge beneath it that Minato immediately recognised. "How could you have possibly known?"

Minato met his gaze without flinching. The Hokage's expression was calm, but there was a subtle tension in his shoulders that betrayed his awareness of the situation's delicacy.

"Sora's presence in the delegation wasn't accidental," Minato said carefully. "He was deliberately placed into the village system as part of a controlled experiment."

Renjiro's eyes narrowed. "Experiment?"

"The objective was to determine whether surviving Uzumaki could be reintegrated into Konoha without the other major villages discovering it," Minato explained. "We needed to test whether Konoha could protect and conceal surviving Uzumaki bloodlines. Sora became a test case for a much larger policy."

He paused, letting the weight of his words settle.

"He was never intended to be sacrificed or harmed. The goal was simply to assess whether reintegration was possible."

Renjiro became unusually quiet. His mind immediately started processing the implications, his exhaustion momentarily forgotten as the strategic logic unfolded before him. He could understand the reasoning behind the operation; it made sense from a political and military perspective. What he could not understand was why he hadn't been told.

I am one of the most prominent surviving Uzumaki in Konoha, he thought, his internal voice cold with calculation. I am also the village's Jonin Commander, whose influence is second only to the Hokage and the Elders. I have personally been trying to understand the fate of the surviving Uzumaki. I had been interacting with Sora without knowing the full circumstances.

His anger wasn't explosive. Instead, it became colder, more focused. He realised this meant there were potentially entire areas of village policy concerning his own clan that existed beyond his knowledge.

"Why wasn't I told?" Renjiro asked, his voice unnervingly calm.

Minato immediately recognised the tone. He had heard it before, in moments when Renjiro was nearly seething beneath the surface. Hiruzen watched carefully, realising that this wasn't merely a young shinobi being upset about being excluded. It was Renjiro questioning whether the village actually trusted him.

"The decision wasn't solely mine," Minato said carefully. "The operation came directly from the Daimyo. Because of the political sensitivity surrounding surviving Uzumaki, the circle of people informed was intentionally kept small."

He paused, choosing his next words with precision.

"Secrecy was considered essential. Other villages could interpret the move as Konoha rebuilding the Uzumaki clan. Kumo, Iwa, Suna, and Kiri could potentially investigate. Knowledge of surviving Uzumaki could make Sora a target."

Renjiro acknowledged the political reasoning with a slight nod. "I understand the Daimyo's reasoning," he said. "If he ordered it, I understand why you had to follow it."

He paused, his voice dropping.

"But that's not what I'm asking. Why wasn't I trusted enough to know? I could have helped. I could have protected Sora. I could have helped assess whether the reintegration plan was viable. Instead, I unknowingly interacted with him while everyone else possessed information I didn't."

Hiruzen finally entered the conversation, his aged voice carrying the weight of his authority.

"You were deliberately excluded," he said, his words careful, measured. "Given your current complicated relationship with the surviving Uzumaki, we considered it safer not to involve you."

Renjiro's eyes narrowed. "My complicated relationship?"

"Your emotions and personal detachment could have compromised the secrecy of the operation," Hiruzen explained. "It was a security decision, not an insult."

Renjiro processed the words, his expression remaining unreadable.

"You said 'we,'" he said slowly. "Who exactly is we?"

Brief silence.

"Minato and I," Hiruzen admitted.

Renjiro nodded slowly. His suspicion deepened as he realised the operation predated the current conversation and involved deliberate coordination between the former and current Hokage. His mind began connecting dots; this was not a recent decision, but something that had been planned long before the delegation left for Kumo.

"Who else knew about this?" Renjiro asked, his voice flat.

Minato hesitated before answering. "Hiruzen. Myself. Kushina. The village elders."

Each name landed heavily on Renjiro. The fact that Kushina knew became especially significant. One of the people closest to him had known about Sora while he remained completely unaware. The realisation stung more than he expected.

"Danzō knew?" Renjiro asked, his eyes narrowing.

Minato reluctantly nodded. Hiruzen admitted that he had been the one to inform Danzō. The revelation was particularly uncomfortable; Danzō, of all people, had been included in a circle that excluded Renjiro.

Renjiro didn't explode. He simply processed the fact, internally recognizing how much influence Danzō could potentially have over an operation involving surviving Uzumaki.

The implications were troubling.

Renjiro went silent. His jaw tightened, and his active Mangekyō continued spinning. He mentally ran through everything; Sora, the Uzumaki survivors, Kushina knowing, Hiruzen knowing, Minato knowing, the elders knowing, Danzō knowing, and himself being deliberately excluded. He didn't accuse anyone outright. Instead, he reached a quieter conclusion; there was a lot he needed to catch up on.

He suddenly chuckled under his breath. The tension briefly became stranger rather than lighter.

"Apparently," he said, his voice carrying a note of dark amusement, "I have quite a bit to discuss with Kushina."

The line carried an obvious double meaning; he wanted answers, he was annoyed, and he wasn't planning an immediate confrontation with Minato or Hiruzen. He turned away from them, his body language making it clear that the conversation was over.

"Where do you think you're going?" Minato asked, his voice carrying a note of concern.

Renjiro stopped and looked back. His exhaustion was finally visible, the adrenaline of the battle fading and leaving behind the weight of everything he had endured.

"I just teleported eighty-something people across half the damn country," Renjiro said, his tone becoming increasingly exasperated. "I fought five monsters, used Hiraishin repeatedly, used my Mangekyō abilities extensively, and for the first time in years, my chakra is actually low. I'm tired. I need to rest."

He paused, his voice dropping to a flat, matter-of-fact tone.

"I'm going to sleep. We can continue this conversation when I can actually process it."

Hiruzen watched Renjiro carefully, recognising the moment. He realised that continuing the conversation now would accomplish nothing. Whatever anger Renjiro had wasn't going to disappear through further explanations tonight.

"Let him go," Hiruzen said quietly to Minato. "He needs time to process everything. More importantly, he's just returned from an extreme battle. Pushing him further won't help."

Minato hesitated, then nodded reluctantly. "Fine," he said. "But we will continue this conversation."

Renjiro gave them a final look, his expression unreadable. No dramatic confrontation, no shouting. He simply walked away, his footsteps heavy on the packed earth.

His Mangekyō remained active for a moment before eventually fading as he left, the crimson light dimming until his eyes returned to their ordinary dark hue. The exhaustion finally settled over him like a physical weight, his body screaming for rest after the ordeal he had endured.

Minato watched him go, knowing the conversation had created another problem rather than resolved one. The silence between him and Hiruzen was heavy, filled with unspoken questions and unresolved tension.

"He'll come around," Hiruzen said quietly. "He just needs time."

"I hope so," Minato replied, his voice carrying the weight of his uncertainty.
