The door creaked open.
Neji stepped into the waiting room, his footsteps steady but heavy, his expression shadowed by the weight of defeat.
'Naruto...' His eyes immediately found the blonde standing near the railing beside Sakura, staring down at the field below where the next battle was about to begin.
Sensing a familiar presence, Naruto turned slightly. "Neji."
Neji stiffened. For a moment, his usual composure faltered. It was strange, facing the opponent who had beaten him was far harder than facing that opponent in battle.
"Ugh…" He muttered inwardly, uneasy beneath Naruto's open, unguarded look.
"You surprised me with that punch today…" Naruto said casually, his tone neither mocking nor boastful, just genuine.
"Hmph." Neji crossed his arms and turned his head away, though a faint heat crept up the back of his neck.
"Yeah, even I was surprised…" Sakura added, her lips curling into a light smile.
"Huh…" Shikamaru, who'd been leaning lazily against the wall, turned his head with mild curiosity. His sharp eyes flicked between them.
Neji drew in a slow breath and spoke, voice low but clear. "No matter what I did… loss remains a loss. I have been defeated by you, Naruto."
"Neji!" Naruto called out suddenly.
"Hm?" Neji's eyes narrowed, his brows knitting slightly.
"The past you had worked hard in order to be independent of the Hyūga family… all the hard work you put in before was merely to distinguish yourself amongst their rank," Naruto said.
Neji frowned and asked, a hint of impatience in his tone. "What are you trying to say?"
"Tell me, Neji! Didn't you feel anything different when you worked hard towards this match?" Naruto asked.
Neji fell silent. The question struck deeper than he expected.
"Didn't you have a sense of satisfaction in working hard for yourself compared to all the times you had to put in the effort in respect to your father's existence?" Naruto continued, his voice calm but firm.
Neji's eyes widened.
"Neji! I know how much hard work you put forth to be the genius you are today, despite not being taught by the main branch. I know how much hatred you had for the main branch because of what happened to your father…" Naruto said.
Neji stared at him, surprised. "How did you…"
"I have trained with Lee," Naruto said with a half-smile. "And I am aware of a few things. If you feel defeated from one rematch, think of how much frustration Lee must have built after facing you thousands of times."
At that, Neji's gaze lowered. His thoughts drifted unbidden to the countless times Lee had stood before him, bruised and beaten, yet smiling. Every defeat only seemed to light a brighter fire in that boy's eyes.
'Lee…'
Every memory of Lee rising again with his fists trembling, legs shaking, but never yielding. It struck him like a wave. He remembered thinking it was foolish.
Now, he wasn't so sure.
When he looked up, Naruto was still watching him with that same open, earnest look that made it impossible to hate him.
"Neji," Naruto said, his voice soft but resolute. "Hard work is only a burden that wears you out sooner or later if you're doing it just for the sake of doing it. Hard work is meaningful when it's something you do wholeheartedly. It's only then there's no burden, only results that push you forward… Don't let your past drag you down. Learn to let go and embrace the future in your hands."
The words hit Neji like a clean breeze through heavy fog.
He thought back to his father's final words, written in that simple, trembling hand. 'Overcome your own fate, Neji. Fate is something you work out with your own hands.'
'Father…'
The heaviness in his chest lightened.
"...Naruto," He said quietly, almost reverently, his voice stripped of its usual pride.
Before Naruto could respond, a shout echoed through the arena.
Genma's voice boomed across the field.
"THE FIFTH MATCH BETWEEN UCHIHA SASUKE OF THE HIDDEN LEAF AND GAARA OF THE SAND… BEGIN!!"
The waiting room shook with the roar of the crowd.
"Go, Sasuke-kun!" Sakura cheered from beside them, cupping her hands around her mouth.
"KYAAAAA!!" The girls in the stands screamed, their voices blending into a wild chorus of excitement.
"Oh! The match is starting!" Naruto grinned, leaning forward over the railing as his blue eyes locked on the battlefield.
'Sasuke…' Neji also turned to look, the fire in his eyes rekindled, not of rivalry, but of newfound resolve.
"YEEAAHHH, BOY! LET'S SEE THE POWER OF THE UCHIHA!!!" A man in the crowd shouted, and the whole stadium seemed to shake in approval.
Up in the stands, Fugaku Uchiha watched his son in silence. His usually stern face softened, the corners of his lips lifting ever so slightly into a proud smile.
Sasuke stood below, the wind tugging at his dark hair, the weight of a thousand expectations pressing on his shoulders. But his eyes burned with purpose.
And from the waiting room, Naruto's grin widened. "Show 'em, Sasuke."

Back on the field
Shhh!
The air trembled as a low hum spread across the arena. The golden grains of sand slithered from Gaara's gourd like living serpents, coiling around his feet before fanning outward in an elegant ripple. The sand spread evenly over the ground, gleaming faintly under the sunlight as it formed a silent ring of protection.
The audience went silent. Even the wind seemed to pause, as if the entire world was holding its breath for what was about to come.
Gaara raised his eyes slowly, calm and composed, his voice echoing clear and cold. "Come."
His words weren't loud, but they carried the weight of a challenge.
Across from him, Sasuke exhaled sharply, lowering into a stance. His dark eyes narrowed, Sharingan spinning faintly within them like ripples in blood.
"Hmph," He muttered, lips curving in irritation. 'He's being too cocky.'
The faintest flicker of a smirk tugged at the corner of Gaara's mouth.
Sasuke's fingers twitched with the instant spark before a storm. 'Let's see if you can handle this!'
In one fluid motion, Sasuke whipped his arm out. Several shurikens spun into the air, glinting under the sun as they traced graceful arcs toward Gaara. Before they even reached midair, Sasuke's hands blurred through a rapid series of seals.
'Fire Style — Phoenix Flower Jutsu!'
He inhaled deeply, his chest swelling with chakra, then exhaled, and a torrent of flame burst forth from his mouth in a fan-shaped blaze.
Whoosh!
The field erupted with crimson, orange, and gold colors. The flames danced across the air like streaks of molten silk.
For a fleeting second, the crowd gasped at the beauty of it.
Shhhhhh!
The sand beneath Gaara exploded upward, reacting almost before the flames reached him. It whirled around him in a thick spiral, fusing into a solid wall just as the inferno hit.
Boom!
The collision sent ripples of heat across the arena. The sand hissed, smoke curling upward in spirals as embers scattered through the air like tiny stars.
The flames licked at the surface, devouring everything in their path, but the sand held.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
When the smoke thinned, faint metallic echoes cut through the air. The sound of shurikens embedding themselves into the hardened sand wall, their sharp edges still glowing red from the heat.
The audience erupted in murmurs.
"Tch." Sasuke clicked his tongue.
The smoke cleared fully now, revealing Gaara standing untouched behind his wall, not a grain of sand out of place.
His pale blue-green eyes stared through the gap in the sand like twin blades, calm, bored, yet quietly threatening.
"Damn it," Sasuke muttered under his breath, lowering his arm slightly. His jaw tightened.
The sand fell away in a gentle stream, dissolving back into a swirling pool at Gaara's feet, ready to defend again at a moment's notice.
