Chapter 467 - Ch 273 - The Fifth Match (2)

"OOHHHH!!"

The crowd roared as if the very stadium walls might crack under the force of their voices.

The sound of cheers, stomps, and whistles thundered through the air, every eye burning with anticipation for what many believed would be the most electrifying clash of the entire Chūnin Exams.

"Hehe…" Naruto grinned, the corners of his lips twitching upward with boyish excitement as he stepped onto the staircase. His footsteps echoed lightly against the stone, but then he paused mid-step.

"Huh?"

Two ninja lay before him. One of them slumped unconscious on the floor, and the other pinned to the wall, thrashing helplessly as a band of sand squeezed tight around his torso.

Naruto tilted his head, scratching his cheek.

"What happened here…?" He muttered, his eyes narrowing at the scene.

Up in the audience, the air suddenly shifted. A man shot up from his seat, his face drained of all color the moment his eyes caught sight of Gaara and Sasuke emerging into the light of the field.

"NO!" His voice cracked through the excited chatter like a whip.

Another man beside him paled, trembling so hard that he slipped from his chair and collapsed onto the ground.

"N-No way…" He stammered, lips quivering.

"YOU!!!"

The first man jabbed a furious finger at him.

"Milord! I swear, I don't know—!" The man on the floor scrambled forward, clawing at the ground as though dragging himself closer might save his life.

"It was you who assured me the two jōnin wouldn't fail!" Spittle flew from the enraged man's mouth, his eyes bloodshot with fury. "And now look! Not only did they lose to a genin, but they also cost me a fortune! Wagers, bribes, the contracts, all are ruined!"

"M-Milord, please! Have mercy—!"

"Mercy?" The man's lip curled into a cruel snarl. "There will be no mercy. You, your family, your children, and their children after them… all of you will serve me until the end of your pitiful bloodline!"

"NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!"

The man's scream tore through the air as he latched onto his master's leg in desperation, his sobs mingling with the crowd's wild cheers.

Elsewhere, a quiet chuckle slithered free from beneath the Kazekage's mask. Orochimaru's golden eyes gleamed dangerously as he took in the sight of two figures now standing across from one another in the arena.

'Finally… the moment I've been waiting for.'

"Sasuke…" Sakura whispered softly from the waiting room balcony.

Not far away, Ino leaned forward, eyes sparkling.

"This is it… Sasuke's match! Everyone's been waiting for this," She said excitedly, unable to hide the admiration in her voice.

Lee, however, did not share their excitement. His fists tightened against his lap, eyes burning with envy as he gazed down at the field. 'Despite Naruto-kun warning me in time… my body ended up like this. I lost... And now Sasuke-kun stands where I couldn't... facing that monster Gaara of the Sand…'

His gaze wavered to the blond in the stands. 'Naruto-kun defeated Neji, the opponent I'd sworn to take down myself. And he... he trained with me. He sparred with me in the forest. Yet all it took for him was a single technique to shatter Neji's fate… while I…'

His chest tightened, pain threading through his thoughts. 'Will I ever be able to catch up to him?'

"Lee…" A gentle voice cut through his storm of doubt.

Lee blinked and turned, only to see Gai's hand resting firmly on his shoulder.

"Gai-sensei…"

Gai's eyes were calm, yet glimmered with warmth. "I know what you're feeling. I once felt the same way… when I stood against Kakashi."

Lee's breath hitched.

"Yes," Gai continued, his tone steady, as if replaying the memory himself. "Kakashi was hailed as a genius while I was mocked for having nothing but taijutsu. But I challenged him again and again to the point where, even against all odds, we stood equal."

Lee's trembling slowed. He stared at his teacher with renewed hope.

"Listen well, Lee. Naruto-kun may have surpassed you and Neji today… but you are still in the springtime of your youth!" Gai's voice rose, his hand clenching into a fist as his grin widened. "If you pour every fiber of your being into it, if you burn with the flames of hard work, there is nothing that can stop you from surpassing even him!"

Tears welled in Lee's eyes as his chest swelled with a familiar, blazing fire. "Gai-sensei…"

Gai's trademark pose snapped into place: thumb up, teeth sparkling, a smile wide enough to blind the heavens. "So for now, leave your training to me. Sit back and watch for now. And let your youth be ignited by this match!"

"YESSS!!!" Lee's tears spilled freely as he shouted, voice cracking with passion. He wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, his determination reigniting as his gaze swung back to the arena.

And down below, two prodigies stood still, the roar of the coliseum rising like a storm around them.

...

Back on the field, a heavy silence spread across the arena as the dust from the previous fight settled. The crowd, which had been roaring moments ago, now held its breath as all eyes were fixed on the two figures standing across from each other.

Genma adjusted the senbon between his teeth as his sharp gaze swept over them. His voice, calm yet cutting through the thick tension, broke the stillness.

"Are you two ready?"

Sasuke didn't answer right away. His black eyes locked on Gaara, and for an instant, they glimmered with both determination and the quiet pride of an Uchiha. Then, with a curt nod, he replied, "Mm."

Gaara, surrounded by an ominous swirl of sand that shifted restlessly at his feet, inclined his head slightly. His pale, almost lifeless eyes betrayed no emotion, yet the very air around him carried suffocating pressure. He too answered with a small nod.

The faintest gust of wind blew across the arena, swirling the dust and tugging at the edges of cloaks and hair. The tension was so thick, it seemed as if even the earth itself had gone still to witness what was about to unfold.

From the stands, Orochimaru's lips curved into a snake-like smile beneath his Kazekage disguise. His golden eyes narrowed with cruel anticipation. 'Yes… let's start the match already.'

Beside him, the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, leaned forward in his seat, his old eyes sharp and wary. He could feel the storm about to break.

Somewhere behind him, Jiraiya crossed his arms, his expression grim.

The crowd began to murmur restlessly, voices rising in a wave of excitement, but their words blurred into the background.

On the field, only Sasuke and Gaara existed.

Genma raised his hand, his tone rising as he declared to the entire stadium, "THE FIFTH MATCH BETWEEN UCHIHA SASUKE OF THE HIDDEN LEAF… AND GAARA OF THE SAND—"

The wind surged violently, rattling the flags around the arena as if nature itself recognized the significance of the moment.

"…BEGIN!!"

The crowd erupted into thunderous cheers, their voices shaking the colosseum.
