Chapter 22 - Chapter Twenty two

Landmark led the walk down the stairs that led to the sun filled garden. Not waiting to bask in the glory of the sun, his steps quickened to the connected hall where he slowed down a little for the little woman to catch up. The part of the building where they walked through was used for nothing in particular other than sight seeing of the beautiful garden with insects and other colorful butterflies perching from flower buds to flowers and flapping to a new position. They walked in silence for a considerable amount of time before Landmark broke the peaceful silence.

"Tell me something about yourself Delilah". Not expecting that kind of question, Lady Delilah's head snapped up to look at him.

"About me?". He nodded. "You're sure?". When he turned to look at her she apologized quickly.

"Forgive me but I didn't expect that kind of question".

"As expected". He replied, patiently waiting for her to gather her thoughts.

"There's nothing special to speak about, really!".

"That's because you think so".

"Excuse me?".

"That's because you think so". The heels of her shoes clicked loudly against the floor as they were far away from the opposite building that connected the garden to this hall.

"I don't follow".

"What do you think our work as Nobles entitles?". At that question Lady Delilah froze.

What was their work exactly apart from attending parties and trying to show off wealth

"You don't know do you?". She kept mute, not knowing what to say.

"You see, life is beyond what we see; it's something we don't have control of at the same time we do in a way".

"How's that possible?".

"You're not seeing things beyond what they seem Delilah". She tried to process all what he said but she just didn't understand.

"I'm lost".

"Let me ask you a question. What would you do if a Commoner's child hugs your feet?".

"Push it away". She classified a child as 'It' making Landmark laugh out loud and making her surprised as to why she was tasked to these kind of questions.

"You're not thinking straight kid". Lady Delilah narrowed her eyes at Landmark at being called that.

"The title 'Sir', 'Lord', 'Lady', 'King', and so on are all just words. What makes those words active are the behavior of that individual, that's what makes titles active". She nodded understanding the deep meaning of title.

"The first person to bring about this city was a mere man, flesh and blood and probably without the sense or ideas of clothes but as days passed, evolution took place and ideas conjured through deep thinking. I'm sure you probably never thought about that". She nodded slowly, processing every word bit by bit.

"May I ask a question?". Landmark nodded.

"Why are you telling me all this?".

"You look sensible and letting you go down the wrong path could lead to your destruction".

Lead to her destruction? What did he mean?

"Bullying. That's what I mean".

"I don't see anything wrong with that as long as they're lower in position and I wouldn't call that bullying".

"It is what it is no matter what you try to classify it under or how you paint it, it is what it is".

"The titles were given to us to help one another especially those in lower ranks or no ranks at all. That was what the first mere man wanted when he colonized this city with his peaceful followers but you see the covetousness of man leads to downfall. You've gotten the wrong information and mindset about things from the previous king and I trust you are among those who knows right from wrong".

"But how do you know all these?".

"Mentality Delilah, mentality".

"So you mean we attending the royal ball with Commoners is not a bad thing and we as a city settling our differences with the Roman Empire is the right thing to do?".

"Yes".

"We are all one flesh and blood but birthed in different places with each soil tracing back to each other. So Delilah the mentality you have, drop it. The title you bear was given to you to help others not to flaunt wealth or jewelries; we're all made of the same skin, the same sand but different names, faces, souls..."

"I thought you were the notorious Landmark known only for killing and teaching lessons with corpses?". Landmark chuckled.

"I don't do all those without a reason".

"Oh!". Lady Delilah looked down at her hand as she nodded in understanding as Landmark walked them to a peony bush where a monarch butterfly was perched, displaying its beautiful and intricate lines and colors slowly with the flap of its wings swayed by the breeze that danced in different directions.

"What do you notice about this monarch fly?".

"It's beautiful with a unique pattern from red admiral, peacock, morpho and the others".

"So are we".

"But you just said we're the same!".

"Don't get me wrong, so as we're the same we're different in some ways just like the butterflies, they're all known under the term 'Butterfly', we are also known under the term 'Humans'. We function and carry out different operations".

"If you feel insecure, you'll carry out the tax to terminate the next individual who is operating a different program". Lady Delilah bit her lips and looked down in shame. At some point she had classified herself under monstrosity but her dead conscience appeased her guilt.

"Just as how each butterfly carries different patterns". As if the butterfly knew it was being talked about, it flew away. "So each individual does too".

"Try working on your self esteem kid". Landmark patted Lady Delilah's shoulder and left her there to think, knowing he had hit hard.
