"I don't know either," Amanda Smith shook her head with a somewhat helpless smile as she gazed at the small baby in the cradle nearby, "Maybe he was just too eager to come out..."
He had come out a month early.
By all accounts, this was premature birth, but the doctor had said the child was very healthy.
That was a stroke of good luck amidst the misfortune.
A week later, Amanda Smith was discharged from the hospital and returned to the Johnson family home to continue her postpartum recovery. The little baby had grown well, his originally wrinkly skin becoming tender and translucent. His eyes had also opened; big and round, he would smile at anyone, exceedingly adorable.
Lily Smith was initially upset to learn she had a baby brother and was scared to tears the first time she saw her ugly little brother, adamantly denying he was her real brother. Even though Amanda had told her she looked just as unattractive when she was a baby, Lily could not come to terms with it.
