Third Person POV

It was the next day, and the teens were now in the arena to showcase how far their training had brought them. It was their first real test where, instead of working together, they faced each other.

Whoever defeated the Gronckle first would be crowned the winner and earn the honor of killing their first dragon in front of the entire village.

"You may have won most of the tests, Helga, but this time I'm going to win." Astrid smirked as she gripped her axe.

"By all means, go ahead." Helga sighed as she stood up from their crouched position.

Scanning the crowd of people gathered to watch them, her gaze stopped on one person—her father. He stood at the very front, watching her and cheering her on. He had high hopes for her, hopes she wasn't sure she could meet.

From her best friend's disappearance, the talk about her mother, and the inner conflict over her father's quest to destroy the dragon's nest, she wasn't sure what to do next. Everything was happening too fast for her to keep track.

Lost in her thoughts, she didn't notice the Gronckle racing toward her. Seeing this, Astrid tackled her to the ground just before the dragon could crush her.

"Get in the game, Helga! This isn't the time to be moping around! Either take this seriously or leave!" She shouted before pulling her to her feet.

"Sorry…" Helga grunted as she refocused on the task at hand.

She slammed her sword against her shield, causing the Gronckle to become momentarily disoriented before lunging at her. Rolling to the side, she dodges shots of magma fired at her before taking a glance at the other teens.

The twins were fighting each other, Fishlegs was attempting to stay hidden behind some wooden barriers, and Snotlout… was being Snotlout.

'It seems like Astrid and I are the only ones taking this seriously…' Sighing, she dodged another magma blast.

Seeing the distracted Gronckle, Astrid took the chance to attack from behind. She jumped from a barrel, leaping onto the dragon. The dragon started to freak out, bucking wildly in an attempt to shake her off.

Unable to hold on, Astrid was thrown off and unceremoniously landed on her back. Turning toward the girl, the dragon tries to fire its magma at her, only for barely anything to come out.

Seeing this, Helga immediately rammed her shield into the dragon's face as hard as she could. Momentarily stunning the Gronckle, she repeatedly bashed her shield into its skull.

"Helga, that's enough, you won." Astrid tried telling her, but she didn't listen.

She continued to beat the dragon until eventually the dragon was weak enough that she felt it could no longer continue fighting. Cheers erupt throughout the arena as the Vikings cheer for Helga's victory.

Astrid, on the other hand, was slightly disturbed by her friend's actions. Before Astrid could go toward her, she heard the sound of Stoick's voice erupt from the crowd.

"Quiet down! The elder is deciding."

After everything falls silent, Gothi approaches the railings of the arena, looking at the two. Walking up to them, Gobber points to Astrid first, but she shakes her head.

Gobber then points to Helga, causing Gothi to smile and confirm the choice. The cheers of the Vikings erupt once more as everyone cheers for Helga. Helga could only sigh as she began to walk out of the arena.

Astrid stared at her friend's back as she left. Her thoughts about her friend's actions. She knew she had never acted like this before. Something was wrong, and she's going to find out what.

Helga's POV

I won the test, but I didn't care. There was nothing left for me to do in the village except wait until they prepared for me to kill a dragon. But it wasn't like I was going to be there for it. Since no one was searching for Kaarik, I'll search for him on my own.

I was done waiting. The sun began setting as I walked through the forest. After a few minutes of walking, I finally reached the cove.

"Toothless?! Where are ya, bud?! We're leaving." I called out to Toothless, but I didn't see him anywhere.

"So, this is where you come when you disappear for hours at a time."

Whipping my head around, I see Astrid sitting on a boulder near me.

"Astrid. What are you doing here?" I questioned as I watched her walk toward me.

"I want to know what's going on. You haven't been acting the same ever since Kaarik disappeared."

"Of course, I wouldn't be acting the same. He was your friend, too. I don't get how you're acting like he didn't exist."

"I believe Kaarik can handle himself. He isn't weak. You, of all people, should know that. You've been more distant lately. Quicker to anger. You're out of focus in training." She began to list off what she had been observing about me.

"Whatever. If you're done with your spying, you can leave." I grunted, turning my back to walk away.

"We're not done here, Helga." Astrid said as she tried to stop me by grabbing my shoulder.

As soon as she touched me, I grabbed her arm before flipping her, causing her to land on her back.

"No, you did not."

"Leave." I demanded this time.

As I tried to walk away again, only for Astrid to trip me and bring me to the ground before putting me in a headlock.

"Let… go!" I yelled, struggling to break out of her grasp.

"If you were in the correct state of mind, you could have easily broken out of my hold. What's really going on, Helga? I'm your friend. Why can't you trust me?" She said softly, a hint of rare vulnerability in her voice.

Hearing this, my struggles began to fade. It's been a long time since I last heard her speak in that manner. Astrid was like a sister to me. She was one of the toughest people I knew, but in moments like these, it felt like she was the only other person who truly understood me.

"You don't get it, Astrid…"

"Then help me understand." She said, loosening her hold on me.

Before I could answer, we both heard a piercing roar. Turning toward the sound, I saw Toothless glaring at us, specifically, Astrid.
