Chapter 18 - Uncovering the Pain Behind the Eyes (17)

They tore through the streets, laughter spilling out between ragged breaths as they pushed themselves harder. Aeron leaned forward, grinning; " Come on, Star—you're slowing me down!"

" Slowing you down? Please!" she shot back, cheeks flushed with exhilaration. For a moment, all the weight of palaces, arguments, and expectations was gone—just two friends racing the sunrise. Wildfire High loomed ahead. The substantial stone building rang with morning bustle as they charged through the gates, their shoes striking the floor like war drums.

Victory seemed within reach; the classroom door was only steps away. Then—the shrill clang of the bell. Starfania nearly tripped, a curse ‌slipping under her breath. Aeron groaned, dragging a hand down his face. Together, they pushed through the door, steeling themselves for the storm that awaited inside. Snickers rose immediately from their classmates. At the front, Professor Shadow's eyes narrowed like blades. His voice sliced through the room: " So… what is your excuse this time, Ms. Night, Mr. Johnson?"

Heat rushed to Starfania's cheeks. She bowed her head, voice small but steady. " We're sorry, Professor. It won't happen again."

Shadow scoffed, arms crossing as his attention honed toward her. His words were sharp, meant not just for her but for the entire room. " You see, class, just because Ms. Night carries a crown in her blood, she thinks the world bends around her. Every one of you is equal."

The class nodded in trained unison, though Becka couldn't resist slipping in a sly jab: " At least the rest of us get here on time. Starfania's always last."

Aeron's eyes blazed at the remark, shoulders tensing as he prepared to strike back.

But before a word could escape, Starfania caught his arm, shaking her head with quiet resolve. Not here. Not now. Shadow caught the gesture instantly. His brow arched, suspicion dripping from his tone. " Do you have something to add, Mr. Johnson?"

Aeron stood straighter, jaw locked.

" No, sir." His voice was measured, though his glare cut daggers into the air. That hint of defiance sparked a flicker of pride in Starfania. She couldn't help the faint curl of a smile—until Shadow's voice snapped her back. " Why are you smiling, Ms. Night? Do you find your punishment amusing?"

Her smile vanished. She swallowed hard, mumbling under her breath. " Oh, do speak up, Ms. Night. None of us can hear you."

Her lips parted, the truth bubbling dangerously close to breaking free. " I said—"

The air cracked as another voice rang out, strong and unexpected. " It was my fault they arrived late."
