Chapter 17 - Uncovering the Pain Behind the Eyes (16)

Overwhelmed by a rush of emotions, Starfania leaned forward and wrapped Ms. Ren in a tight hug. For a heartbeat, she clung to her as if afraid to let go. Ren returned the embrace with gentle steadiness, her warmth softening the storm in Starfania's chest.

" You're not alone, Starfania," she whispered, her voice carrying the weight of truth. " No matter how hard it gets, you have people who care for you—more than you realize."

The word pierced her heart. Too often, she had pushed people away, convinced it was safer than being hurt again. Yet here was Ren, reminding her she didn't have to walk this road by herself. Maybe that was why Aeron, Daniel, and even Ren herself had become such an anchor in her life—they stayed, even when she tried to keep them at arm's length.

As the sunlight spilled gently through the tall windows, Starfania let out a long breath. For the first time in weeks, she felt something flicker inside her that resembled hope.

" Thank you, Ms. Ren, " she breathed, pulling back with sincerity in her eyes. " For everything."

Ren's lips curved into a knowing smile, her gaze shining with pride. " You're welcome, dear. Now, finish your breakfast. You'll need your strength–today has a way of surprising us all."

Starfania blinked at the odd note in Ren's words but said nothing. She picked up her fork again, savoring each bite as if determined to hold on to this fragile peace. The moment shattered when the door creaked open and a guard stepped inside, bowing low.

" My lady," he said, " Aeron awaits you outside."

Starfania set her fork down, offering him a polite nod before glancing back at Ren. The older woman chuckled softly. " You're running late again. Off with you, or you'll keep him waiting—and miss half the morning."

Her eyes flew wide. " Late? Already?"

She scrambled from her seat, hugging Ren one last time before snatching her bag. Sprinting toward the gate, she muttered under her breath, " There's no way I'll ever make it in time."

Outside, Aeron's familiar voice rang out. " Hurry up! We're going to be late!"

" I'm well aware!" Starfania shot back, her sarcasm sharp but playful as her feet pounded against the stone.
