A few days after the chaos of the wishing stone, on Christmas Eve, Diana returned to her apartment.
The city was quiet, a stark contrast to the mayhem of the past few days. As she stepped inside, a simple letter lay on her table. It was addressed to her, a single, handwritten note in a world of typed messages.
With a sense of trepidation, she opened it.
The letter read.
Hi, Diana,
This is Steve. If you're reading this, it means I'm gone. I mean, I was already dead a long time ago, but you get what I mean.
I thought a lot about whether I should leave this for you. I kept it with me until the very end, and I decided to leave it to fate. If this letter reached you, it means it was fine to leave this behind.
Now, what I'm about to tell you, I'm not sure about it. It's just a guess, but I have a little confidence in it. I believe we will have a chance to meet again. I don't know when or how, but ever since I woke up, I've been seeing this piece of a memory—of an event that didn't happen when I was alive. I was standing in the ruins in the middle of a city, surrounded by lightning and fire. I saw you there, probably fighting against something, because you were wearing your armor and holding your shield.
I don't know if it's true or just a figment of my imagination, but I hope I will see you again.
Love you always,
Steve
The letter fell from Diana's hands as a single tear rolled down her cheek. She was heartbroken, but also filled with a new sense of hope.
The wish had been undone, but what it set in motion couldn't be.
You see, the wishing stone worked in mysterious ways. Not all wishes were granted with just supernatural powers some wishes were granted by the stone by setting in motion a chain of events to make that wish come true for it saved the energy it had to use.
And even when Maxwell Lord renounced his wish and all wishes came undone, the events that were already in motion couldn't be undone.
Some wishes were like this like a certain scientist working in a government facility who wished for research results or just like another couple on a farm who too had made a wish.
Just a few days after Maxwell Lord lost his powers, on that same Christmas Eve, a space pod crashed somewhere on a farm in Kansas.
A childless couple, who had wished for a son, found him. They got their wish, a son who would grow up to be a hero, but that is a story for another time.
