The room went silent.
My father's words hung in the air like a blade suspended by a thread. I still have my life. I still can offer my help to the Haltons.
Lilith's face went pale. "Father, what are you saying?"
He didn't answer. He just stood there, his hands clenched at his sides, his eyes fixed on the floor.
My mother crossed the room and grabbed his arm. "You're not talking about what I think you're talking about."
"I'm talking about working for the Haltons. As a servant. Or anything." His voice was steady, but I could see the tremor in his hands. "I can't pay back the money, but I can offer my labor. My time. My loyalty."
My mother's grip tightened. "You're a Grand Master. A respected one in society. You can't just..."
"I can do whatever it takes to protect this family." He looked at me. "To protect my daughters."
I stood and walked to him. "Father, I don't need you to sacrifice yourself."
