My mother appeared in the doorway, her face pale, her hands clenched at her sides.
"I knew about the surgery," she said quietly. "But I didn't know about the loan shark. I didn't know about the debt. I thought it was only kindness debt that we should repay to the Haltons family."
"I didn't want you to worry." My father looked at her. "I thought I could handle it myself."
"You thought wrong." My mother walked into the room and stood before him. "We're married. We're supposed to face things together."
"I know." He bowed his head. "I'm sorry."
My mother was silent for a long moment. Then she knelt beside him and took his other hand.
"I'm not angry," she said. "I'm hurt. But I'm not angry."
"You should be."
"I'm not." She squeezed his fingers. "Because I understand. I would have done the same thing."
The four of us stayed there, kneeling and standing, bound by blood and brokenness.
