Chapter 199: The Face from the Past
The woman in front of me. Why was she here? I never thought that someone like her would be tangled in this nightmare.
"I know you."
The woman's eyes widened, a flicker of recognition crossing her face. "I... I don't think so," she stammered, but her voice lacked conviction.
"Yes, I do," I insisted, my mind racing. The way she held herself. The cold, appraising look in her eyes. The slight curl of her lip, the same expression I had seen months ago at the Government Hall.
That day came flooding back. The day Lilith and her friends had surrounded me in the corridor, laughing behind their hands. I had just submitted myself for certification. The board was reviewing it. And Lilith had looked at me with that same cold smile and said, "You? You think you deserve to pass? Someone like you?"
Her friends had echoed her mockery. And among them, standing slightly behind, watching without laughing, was this woman.
