She Had Cornered Me
The calm shattered the moment Lilith swept into the kitchen.
She didn't enter, but she lunged. Her movements were sharp and deliberate, like a predator locking onto prey. My parents, still seated at the table with their half finished coffee and the morning news murmuring in the background, looked up in surprise.
Lilith let out a soft, pitying sigh, perfectly timed to draw our mother's attention.
"Mother... There's something… something I saw yesterday that I didn't want to bring up." She hesitated, then gestured vaguely toward the television. "But after seeing all this, I'm worried."
My mother straightened, the anxiety already etched on her face deepening. "What is it, Lilith? What did you see?"
"Yesterday, mother. Before everything happened. A car stopped in front of our house. A very… luxurious car. The driver was in uniform. He opened the door for her."
Her eyes slid toward me, wide and troubled.
