Chapter 14 - Chapter Fourteen: To Learn Means We Must Fall

A month had passed and you had learned how to crawl and move about the apartment. Your mama Nat had baby proofed the apartment so that you couldn't get into things that were dangerous for little hands. On top of learning how to crawl you were now testing physics and learning how to pull yourself up to a standing position.

To say your mama's were overprotective was an understatement. They never left you out of their sight and you often heard them tell you to be careful. You had fallen a few times and it had startled you into fits of tears, but thankfully your mama's were always right there to comfort you.

This week your mama Natasha was away for the week for a work trip. She had promised Wanda that she wouldn't be in the field, but that she was needed at the Avenger's compound.

Your mama Wanda sat on the floor playing with you as you played with some colorful blocks in front of you. A ringing sound caught your attention as you looked up from your blocks to look for the source of the sound.

Wanda heard her phone ring from the bedroom where it was plugged into the charger. She wrestled with herself on whether she should bring you with her to the bedroom to grab her phone, or if she could run and get it. "I'll be back y/n. Stay here and play with your blocks, I need to go get my phone."

You watched as your mama stood up and walked away. You wanted to see where she had run off to, so you reached for the couch and used all your strength to pull yourself up. You had managed to make a few steps forward but the floor was slippery from wearing your tiger footed onesie.

—---------

Wanda sighed as she looked at her phone. It had been a spam caller and not Natasha, she always felt nervous when Nat went on missions. A piercing cry from the living room broke her out of her thoughts as she ran out of the bedroom.

"Oh god, y/n! What happened baby?" Wanda asked as she picked you up from the floor.

You were lying on your back crying and screaming, your face was red and turning blue as you were holding your breath. Your head hurt and you were in so much pain. The last thing you remember was taking a step and feeling your head thud against something hard.

Wanda worked fast to check your head and she felt her heart drop when she saw that you had busted your head open. A million thoughts clouded her mind and she couldn't think straight. She had seen horrible things as an Avenger; but the moment she saw her baby bleeding, she couldn't snap into action. It was like she was frozen in fear.

She grabbed her phone and dialed Natasha but cursed when she kept getting a voicemail. Quickly she dialed Melina and hoped that your Babu would know what to do.

"Wanda, what's wrong? Is that y/n?" Melina asked as she was concerned that Wanda had actually called her. She felt a pit in her stomach at hearing your screams.

"Y/n fell and busted her head and I can't get a hold of Natasha. I… I don't know what to do. She won't stop crying and I don't think she's getting enough oxygen because her face is turning blue." Wanda said frantically as she did her best to reassure you. She knew that her caregiver pheromones were probably not helping since she was not in a calm state.

Melina worked fast and directed Wanda on what to do as she grabbed her phone and spammed Yelena and Natasha with messages. "Wanda, I know this is hard but I need you to level out your breathing. Tap into your caregiver role. Y/n is experiencing something called breath-holding. It's common for babies and children when they experience shock, pain or fear. I've called an ambulance to pick you and y/n up and take you to Medbay."

Wanda honed into herself as she took a few deep breaths. Within a few seconds she could feel you begin to relax into her arms. She let out a sob when she heard you begin to breathe again and your cries had died down a bit. "It's going to be okay, y/n. We're going to make you feel better."

Melina stayed on the phone with Wanda the whole time. She had to stop herself from grabbing her things and rushing to the hospital. It would take her hours to get there, so the best she could do was keep Wanda calm.

—---------

You screamed and cried as Dr. Cho made quick work to get you checked out. She made orders to check for any internal damage and or brain damage.

"Wanda, we're going to keep Y/n and make sure that her tests come back clear for brain damage. She's going to need stitches in the meantime. Can you hold her while I stitch her up?" Dr. Helen Cho asked as she handed you back to your mama.

Wanda was thankful that Melina had stayed on the phone with her because she was overwhelmed with so many emotions. Especially since she had to hold you while Cho stitched you up. She felt like a horrible mother for leaving you unsupervised, even if it was only for a few seconds.

"Wanda, you're doing great. I got a hold of Yelena and she and Nat are on their way. How's y/n?" Melina asked as she could tell that you were starting to settle down.

"I think she's starting to feel better. The doctor has her stitched up and they gave her some liquid pain medicine. God, I'm such a bad mom. I shouldn't have left her to answer the damn phone!" Wanda said as she started to feel her emotions rise up.

Melina knew all too well what Wanda was feeling as she had also hated seeing her girls get hurt. It always broke her heart in knowing what Dreykov had planned for Natasha and Yelena, it was like a generational curse that they all could not break free from. "Wanda, listen to me okay? This was all just an accident. You are not a bad mama. Babies and children fall all the time, it is a part of them learning how to interact with the world around them. As much as we would like to put our babies into bubbles and shield them from danger, we cannot. They must fall in order to learn."

"She's right, you know. You're doing great Wanda." Cho said as she placed a reassuring hand on the redhead's shoulder. "Come, let's get you settled in a room. In a bit I will have someone come and take an image of y/n's brain."

—---------

Natasha and Yelena rushed to Medbay the moment that they had looked at their phones and seen that their mother had left hundreds of text messages on each of their phones. Some of them were not very kind and may or may not have contained curse words in Russian.

Nat wanted to vomit as she had felt guilty that Wanda had to handle everything on her own. It must have been terrifying to witness you get injured as a baby. The last time you had been to Medbay it had been when you were in a little headspace but in your adult body. A fall was much scarier with you being in an infant's body rather than an adult one.

"Wanda? Oh god, I am so sorry. How's y/n? Where is she?" Nat asked a million questions as she looked around frantically for you. She took her hoodie off as she noticed that Wanda was shaking and that the front of her shirt was covered with dried blood. "Here love, put this on."

Wanda didn't know what to say as she took the hoodie into her hands. She felt as though she was slipping into a state of shock.

—---------

Yelena had taken Wanda's phone and had let her mama know that they had arrived at the hospital. "I will keep you updated on y/n. Thank you for staying with Wanda, she's pretty shaken up."

"Your father and I are packing and heading to the hospital. It will take us some time to get there but Wanda and y/n are going to need our support. Don't tell Natasha, I don't want her worried about anything else. She needs to be there for Wanda." Melina said as she was quick to throw things into her suitcase. The moment Alexei had found out he was adamant about making the trip to the hospital.

"Be safe driving here. I'll see you in a few hours. Love you." Yelena told her parents as she hung up and found her sister holding Wanda in her arms. She had never seen the redhead so pale and anxious.

—---------

It had felt like hours had gone by before Dr. Cho walked into the waiting room to let your family know how you were doing. "Good news is that I didn't see any sign of internal bleeding. We are going to keep her for a few days to evaluate her. When she was last here she did experience non-epileptic seizures, and I want to make sure that the head injury doesn't trigger any seizure activity. As for now she is stable and we have her in a private room."

Wanda let out a relieved sob as she got up and hugged Helen, "Thank you for everything." Although they had received good news, she knew better than to get her hopes up. You still weren't out of the woods yet. "Can we go and see her?"

Helen nodded her head, "yes. You and your family are more than welcome to stay with her. We just ask that you don't excite her too much. She needs to rest. If you need anything just let one of the nurses know."

Wanda and Nat walked hand in hand into your hospital room and smiled sadly at you. You looked so tiny in the Medbay crib hooked up to all the wires monitoring your vitals.

You were sleeping soundly and sucking on a pacifier which you only did when your mama's weren't around to soothe you.

"This is all my fault." Wanda said as she walked over to the crib and ran her fingers gently through your hair. She made sure to be careful not to touch the bandage that was wrapped securely around your head.

"Wanda, this isn't your fault. I shouldn't have put my phone on silent and I should've been the one to comfort you. I have failed you both and I'm sorry. We can blame ourselves all we want, but that's not going to help the situation. What we are both feeling is valid; but feelings aren't always the truth." Nat said as she rubbed her girlfriend's back.

Wanda nodded her head in understanding, "I know. I'm sorry. It's just I was so scared. I froze when I saw her lying there screaming and crying. Your mom had to coach me through everything. When Tommy or Billy got hurt, I always knew what to do; but seeing her bleeding and crying and not breathing… It's something that will always haunt me."

Nat didn't know what to say as she couldn't imagine what it must have been like. Would she have done the same? There were very few things in life that triggered her fear response. Not many things caused her to freeze on the spot; but the thought of you bleeding on the floor, made her blood turn cold.

—---------

Around 3 a.m you woke up whimpering from pain and hunger. You relaxed immediately when your mama Wanda had picked you up. "Mama." You whimpered as you pressed your face into the crook of her neck.

"Oh, malen'kiy. It's alright. Your mama's are right here. Are you hungry, y/n?" Wanda asked as she soothed you.

Natasha helped Wanda take off her hoodie and shirt so that she could nurse you. Their breastmilk would help speed up the healing process, so she was thankful that your appetite hadn't been affected.

You latched on immediately and made happy eating noises as you suckled from Wanda's breast. Yelena and Natasha both chuckled as they watched you enthusiastically eat.

Once you had finished and Wanda had finished burping you, the pain returned to your head and you grew fussy when your mama moved your hands away from the bandage wrapped around your head.

Yelena could tell that you were uncomfortable and most likely in pain. She had had her fair share of head injuries as a child and adult and they weren't fun. "I'm going to go find a nurse. I think y/n is due for another round of pain medicine."

You made grabby hands towards your mama Nat as you hadn't seen her in what felt like forever. Tears fell down your face as you did your best to regulate your emotions. Your mama laid you on her chest so that you could listen to the sound of her heartbeat.

A nurse walked in and made quick work to check all of your vitals. She held a small syringe filled with strawberry flavored medicine up to your lips and carefully gave you the medicine. It wasn't the best tasting, but it was definitely better than the taste of peas so you swallowed it with little to no issue.

"I've also given her a dose of anti-nausea along with the pain medication. It may make her drowsy so if you aren't holding her please make sure that she stays in her crib."

"I have a feeling that we won't be putting her down anytime soon." Natasha chuckled as she cuddled you and rubbed your back soothingly.

Just as the nurse was about to leave the room Melina and Alexei burst through the door.

"We're here! Now where is my vnushka? (granddaughter)" Melina asked as she instantly relaxed when she saw you snuggled in her daughter's lap.

You opened your eyes as you had heard familiar voices. When you saw your grandparents you smiled up at them, "Babu… Dedu!"
