CHAPTER START---
---December 7th, X769, 10 AM…
"You look stupid," Oberon says as Laxus walks into the Fairy Tail library, wrapped in a fluffy pink blanket and holding a cup of tea.
"Shut up," Laxus says as he wipes his nose. "This was the warmest one Enno could find," he mutters while walking over to one of the bookshelves and leaning against it, sitting on the floor.
"Didn't think Dragons could get sick," Oberon says while taking notes in his Magic Journal.
"Some piece of trash Snow Magic moron froze me," Laxus grumbles as he sips his warm tea. "But I broke his leg, so we're even."
"Well, no food in here, so you should go sleep in Master Makarov's office," Oberon says.
"He's in there with Gildarts, they've been there all morning," Laxus says. "And I can't go back home since I'd be alone, just let me sleep in here, everywhere else in this place is too loud."
"Tch, you'd better not mess up the books," Oberon grumbles.
"Seriously, I'm sick and you care more about your books, thanks a lot…jerk."
"And be quiet," Oberon hisses out, and Laxus just silently sips his tea and tries to recover.
---3 Hours Later…
"I still think this is kind of silly," Oberon says as he looks down at the large Lacrima in his hand.
A few meters away Laxus was standing in the light snowfall with the lake at his back, the Guildhall was over a mile away as they'd moved away from the town for this training.
"Just trust me on this," Laxus says. "Grandpa said Dragonslayers can eat their element and convert it into Magic Energy. Just put some Magic Energy into that Lacrima and throw is at me, and I'll do the rest."
"And if this hurts you?" Oberon asks.
"I'm a Lightning Dragon Slayer, Lightning Magic can't hurt me, remember, I'm immune to it," Laxus sticks his tongue out.
"And what about the shockwave from the explosion? Idiot."
"It's a discharge type, not explosive type, I'm not stupid you know."
"Well, you also think you can eat Lightning, so we'll see about that, now get ready," Oberon says as he prepares to throw the Lightning Lacrima.
"Alright, I'm ready!"
"Ok, eat up!" Oberon pours a drop of Magic Energy into the Lacrima to activate it before he throws it at Laxus.
As the Lacrima is within a few feet of Laxus, it erupts into a storm of blue Lightning Magic, spreading out in all directions.
Oberon squints as the flashing light shines through this area and instinctively raises a hand, his Cosmic Armor long since raised before even throwing the Lacrima.
As the Lightning Magic spreads out, before it reaches Oberon, Laxus seemingly grabs it and begins greedily shoveling it into his mouth.
"Wow," Oberon mutters as he stares in horror, while Laxus slurps up the last few bolts of Lightning Magic like pasta.
"Told ya I could do it," Laxus gloats, while Oberon just looks at him with disgust.
"You're such a freak, eating Lightning, seriously?"
"It actually tastes pretty good, kinda…"
"Spicy?"
"Honestly, tangy," Laxus says. Then, with a wave of his hand, he releases a large bolt of Lightning Magic into the lake. "That feels way better, I think I can actually get overloaded."
"Like a bomb?"
"No, it felt more like," Laxus thinks about it for a moment. "Like all my Dragon Slayer traits were on overdrive. It was pretty cool, but distracting. I should use a big attack whenever I get like that, at least until I can keep my focus after eating that much Lightning Magic."
"Still freaky, anyway, did Porlyusica say anything about your Magic?"
Laxus shrugs, "Before I left she just said my organs and skin are getting tougher, makes it harder to get sick and stuff. I mean, I should be dead after that Snow Magic attack, but all I got was a cold, and it was gone after a few hours."
"Well that must be nice," Oberon mutters.
"Says the guy who healed a Magic Rifle blast to the chest," Laxus says as he walks over to Oberon. "But she also said my sensory organs are developing a bit weird, like they're overlapping."
"Overlapping," Oberon gives him a strange look. "What, like you've got two noses?"
"More like my Dragon Slayer senses and my human senses are working at the same time, giving me two different sets of feelings—"
"Which is why you get motion sickness," Oberon says.
"Yeah, so I think it's a permanent thing," Laxus mutters.
"Unless you just get rid of the human senses entirely, that would solve it," Oberon says. "But since it's due to your Magic then…I don't even know how you'd do that. Transformation Magic maybe?"
"What, like transforming the inside of my body into something else? Can Magic even do that?"
"People can transform into creatures or people smaller and larger than themselves, Magic Energy compensates for changes in mass and stuff. And some people can even take certain traits. Like Master Makarov told me that Wolfheim, one of the top four Wizard Saints, the guys they call the Four Gods Of Ishgar, he only uses Transformation Magic."
"Seriously?" Laxus asks. "How the heck does that even work?"
"He uses the strongest traits from all his transformations, and fuses them into something he calls the Ultimate Beast Of The Apocalypse, so if he can do that, maybe you can figure out how to not get sick on a train."
Laxus groans, "But that means I'd have to learn a third Magic, I've already got Lightning Magic and Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic to master, so I should focus on those first."
"Do you plan to learn any more after those?"
Laxus thinks about it for a moment, then nods, "Well, I'll need Telepathy Magic like gramps has, that's too useful for a Guildmaster not to have. Then, Lightning Enchantment Magic?"
"Hmm, that could let you make Lightning appear from anywhere you Magic Energy can reach, not just on your body, and it gives you more options in how to use it," Oberon says. "What about Cloud Magic?"
"Cloud Magic? Why the heck would I want that?"
"Well, you could make storm clouds for bigger attacks, you'd be like a storm god," Oberon says. "That'd be pretty cool. I mean, why settle for just lightning when you can have the whole sky?"
"Huh," Laxus thinks about it for a moment. "Storm God Laxus…it does sound pretty good."
"You will have to hold off on that for a while!" Makarov announces as he steps out of the treeline and approaches the boys. "Powerful Wizards have multiple Magics because they are powerful, they are not powerful because they have multiple Magics."
"Yeah yeah grandpa," Laxus says as Makarov reaches them.
"And you two have quite a journey ahead of you, there isn't much anyone can do to help you learn Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic, or Cosmic Magic, but I'm quite relieved to see that you're helping each other."
"What about God Serena?" Laxus asks. "I mean, he's the most powerful Wizard on Ishgar, the strongest Wizard Saint, and he's a Dragon Slayer too, with a Lacrima just like me. Maybe you could ask him?"
"Laxus, you know the less people that know about this the better, after all Dragon Lacrima are quite rare, and many Mages would kill to get their hands on one," Makarov says. "Besides, God Serena is not someone who can be trusted, that man only cares to 'follow the winds of Magic' as he says, whatever the hell that means."
"But he is powerful, right?" Oberon asks.
"He is beyond powerful," Makarov says. "In this world, there are no true Gods, even beings called Gods who are worshipped, have always been proven to simply be beings with immense Magic Power. God Serena is among the very few Wizards in this world to have such otherworldly power that to even regular Guild Wizards, he is divine."
Laxus swallows nervously, "Do you think that, if he knew about my Lacrima—"
"There is a chance, yes," Makarov says. "That man is famous for being the 'Hybrid Theory', because, not only does he have a Dragon Slayer Lacrima in him, he has eight."
"Eight!" Laxus takes a step back, shocked. "But you said that…that even using one was…was…"
"A one in ten thousand chance of survival, yes," Makarov says. "That is because some of the Dragon's will is within the Lacrima, so it must approve of the host, and as you'd imagine Dragons aren't fond of sharing a host."
"So the chances get worse each time, and he did it seven times," Oberon says. "But why, for power?"
"Yes, God Serena is driven by ego, arrogance, and a strange curiosity," Makarov says. "In fact, the only reason he is a Wizard Saint is because the Magic Council promised him access to the same information I brought to Laxus, for him to understand Dragon Slayer Magic."
"Eight Lacrimas," Laxus mutters. "I can't even master one, and he has eight."
"Yes, but don't let his reputation deceive you into believing that he simply throws around immense Magic Power," Makarov says. "He was an Alchemist on another continent for a time during his travels, which proves his intelligence, and as a Wizard, he has done the impossible many times. Such as performing Unison Raids."
"Unison Raid?" Laxus asks.
Makarov looks to Oberon, and gestures for him to speak.
"It's not something most Mages would know about, because of how rare it is," Oberon says. "When two Wizards can perfectly synchronize their Spells they can create something more powerful than the sum of both spells. Magic energy resonates with itself in a special way that's almost impossible to train for, it's a natural phenomenon that must happen naturally, but after it happens it can be replicated with enough training."
"Yes, monks within Wizard Saint Aven's order have spent their entire life trying to perform it with each other to no avail," Makarov says. "But Wizard Saints Aven and Ines are able to perform Unison Raids with each other, but those two have been friends long before they became Wizards Saints so that's not much of a surprise."
"Huh, Spellbook Magic and Fire Magic working together, that could mean anything," Oberon says.
"That sounds awesome to me!" Laxus says. "Spellbook Magic is so cool!"
"Yeah, too bad casting a Spell from it uses over four times as much Magic Energy as if you had the type of Magic," Oberon says. "But being able to capture and Spells that are fired at you into a Spellbook and cast it is pretty cool."
"Too bad it's a Holder Type Magic, so unless he has a second Spellbook that nobody has ever found, you can't learn it."
"Ugh, don't remind me," Oberon says. "You know the coolest thing about Holder Magic is that anyone can buy it in a Magic shop, one of a kind Magic Artifacts totally ruins that."
"Perhaps," Makarov says. "But there are geniuses in all types of Magics, so it's no surprise that a fine craftsman could spend his entire life working on one item before passing away."
"I guess you're right, and it's not like I can use any Magic Items like that anyway," Oberon says. "I still need to work on controlling my Magic Energy before I can set up my Communication Lacrima."
Laxus immediately begins laughing, "You're gonna be just like Gildarts, always breaking his Lacrimas on Jobs!"
"No way! I'm not clumsy, I just…need to learn to release less power at once…and not let it diffuse into the environment as much…and control it so it doesn't spread as far."
"Sounds like you'll be just like Gildarts to me," Laxus laughs as Oberon scowls at him.
"Speaking of being like Gildarts," Makarov says, getting both of their attention. "I was going to call you both to the Guild hall over an hour ago, but when I sensed your training, I thought against it, you missed the big announcement."
"The S-Class Promotion Trial?" Laxus asks.
"Yes, and both Macao and Wakaba will be participating," Makarov says. "They were quite excited, they ran off to get some training done while the party was still going on."
"Wow, they must really be serious," Oberon says. "What are the trails anyway, is it like who kills a monster first wins? Or something else?"
"It changes every year," Makarov says. "Usually the first round is somewhere like Mt.Hakobe, the final round is always on Tenroujima Island."
"Where?"
"It's our private island," Laxus says. "Fairy Tail bought it a while ago and now a Magic Barrier protects it from anyone who isn't invited or doesn't have our Guild Mark."
"Ohhh, that's what he meant when he said our Guild Emblem is more than just a sticker," Oberon says.
"Yes, that's exactly it," Makarov says. "Our sacred island is our most valuable treasure," he lies.
"So is becoming S-Class the only way to get there?"
"Yes, after you become S-Class you will have access to the island," Makarov says. "But until you get to the final round of the S-Class trails, you will never be setting foot there."
"I've been there once," Laxus says, smugly.
"Seriously? What's it like?"
"It has a giant tree, like miles tall in the middle of it, covering the whole island," Laxus says excitedly. "But the place is really hot because it has no wind, none at all, it also doesn't have any current in the ocean."
"Part of the barrier?" Oberon asks Makarov.
"Hmm, you've read more about Defense Magic than I expected, yes, that is part of the protection," Makarov says. "Those creatures on the island can also be quite dangerous for regular people, but Wizards should be fine there."
"Yeah, and there's a really old village there, broken buildings and stuff," Laxus says. "That's where our First Guildmaster was born."
"Oh, so that's why the island is so important."
"She was also buried there," Makarov says. "That is also what makes it our holy ground."
"Wow," Oberon mutters. "Mavis Vermillion, is buried there. I really wish I could have met her…"
Makarov feels his Guild Mark on his chest radiating warmth, and smiles and neither Laxus or Oberon notice that Oberon's Guild Mark on his inner forearm also glows.
"I have a feeling you are everything she expected from a member of Fairy Tail," Makarov says. "Now, how about we go enjoy the party?"
"Sorry grandpa," Laxus says. "Oberon is about to teach me how to fight like him, in the air!"
"Which means we'll be back at the Guildhall pretty soon," Oberon chuckles. "Laxus still gets tired super fast from flying."
Laxus punches him lightly in the arm, "I'm getting better."
"Ha," Oberon begins floating above the ground. "By the time you figure it out, I'll be able to fly for days at a time!"
"I'll show you!" Laxus says as he shrouds himself with lightning and flies into the air, chasing Oberon.
Makarov smiles as he watches the boys play and train, proud of what Fairy Tail is becoming.
'First Master, please, watch over them,' Makarov feels his Guild Mark radiate warmth again. 'And stop that, I can't have them asking too many questions before they become S-Class!'
"Hmph!" he hears behind him, turning around to see no one there.
'No need to be all pouty about it,' Makarov thinks as he makes his way back to the Guild hall…
