Pitch black darkness. Everywhere I looked, there was nothing to be seen. Nothing at all for an incalculable distance.
Not up, not down, not left, not right.
There wasn't anything there. Ever.
"I'd had enough of this." I would think. "This is boring."
I was the most powerful of that little group of primordial beings.
Primordials— beings born of the Void itself. Born of that eternal, neverending, never-ceasing energy constantly flowing around, invisible to the mortal eye.
Yes, I was one of those. One of them.
Bored out of my mind, I'd often create a small world for myself. Just a wave of my hand to create a gleaming circle above me: a moon. Another swipe to summon tiny dots to accompany it: stars. A little swirl in space as I spun about with my arms out wide to form an aquatic surface beneath me.
Sploosh.
As always, I descended into my world in peace. Walking on water like one of the sons of the older primordials in silence, I would breathe in and out to generate fresh air.
Then they come to me.
"Family meeting!"
Sploosh. Splish. Splash. Splash. Splish. Splash…
I turned to look at the rest of the primordials as they landed nearby. Among them were a couple of small pups, an 'angel', and my 'brother' who had been born right beside me.
As usual, the oldest primordial was absent, likely hanging in the upper dimension of his own world with his holy guards as he observed his creations closely.
It was our responsibility, after all. As primordials born of the void's endless supply of energy, we were born with the power to wield that same energy in any way we saw fit.
Most primordials used that power to create worlds, becoming 'gods' as some call us. We were indeed "lords of creation".
I was the strongest, and was known amongst the primordials for having the largest memory capacity of any known void existence.
As a result, they gave me a name, based on one of the languages of one of the original worlds— 'Kioku'. I however disliked this name, since it essentially just meant 'memory'. So instead, I suggested something similar, easier to remember, and without background.
By shortening 'Nokioku' which means 'memory of', I had given myself the name 'Noki'.
It had no actual meaning to the name like their original idea that inspired it, however; this was more fitting for one of the void.
"Noki."
My brother stepped forward. We stared into each other's eyes. Mine dead and cold, his full of passion and frustration.
"What do you guys want this time? Which of you called the meeting? And why am I to get involved?"
"As the strongest among us you should decide."
"...That is not a reason. What are you blabbering about this time, Loid?"
To make it easier for myself, I had also suggested they give themselves names.
Loid was my brother— his name was simply originated from the word "Void" and the letter "L".
The angel, Ener—named after "energy" and "inner".
Then there were the cubs, Soul and Vessa. Vessa had decided on simple, straightforward names to make it easier for Soul.
The rest, however, had not decided on names yet.
However— Something about Loid seemed off.
He suddenly started grinning from ear to ear and grabbed onto my wrist with much grip.
"We should be able to do whatever we want, right!? We're gods, right!?"
I did not respond to him. I only gave him a look, showing I was unamused.
"You agree, right!?"
Loid was smiling, as if he already knew my answer. His eyes were wide and dilated. There was an ominous feel to them. Yet—
"I see. I will say I agree. But I don't care what you and the others do, Loid. So I will ask again, why am I to get involved?"
Instead of answering, Loid turned away from me and threw his arms up as he spoke to the other gods in excitement.
"See! I told you he'd agree with me! That's my brother for you!"
"However, Loid! That does not mean we should go around destroying other primordials' worlds! It's disrespectful!" The angel Ener spoke up against him.
"Ehhh? But isn't just sitting around and observing worlds boring!?"
"It is our duty as lords of creation! We should not meddle with the mortal race else they will turn agains-"
"So what!? We're gods! It's not like they stand a chance against us anyways!"
Much like the pups, I simply stood by and watched the two argue. It wasn't the first time they've done this, especially about the current topic.
But judging from Loid's look, it seems he had reached his limit. The boredom was clearly beginning to be too much to bear.
Ener, however, was the personification of the ideal angel. Righteous, just, a powerful being of pure light. Not to mention, unlike Loid, Vessa, Soul, and I, he already had a world he created to watch over. I believe he called it— 'Resevuni'?
Their yelling persisted. I had already lost interest, but it seemed likely this argument would turn into a fight. Before, keeping them from fighting was simple.
However, I, too, was bored of my situation. My brother and I were opposites. Creation was my specialty, but destruction was his. So much so, that he earned the title "World Eater" and some primordials go as far as calling him the "God Eater".
Instead of wielding the energy of the void to create, he has only wielded it to pick fights with others to relieve his boredom. Though, he'd always go too far, consuming the loser with his powers like a black hole incarnation. This is how he gained such titles, which only served to amplify his existence as such.
Usually… I'd stop him. But this time—
"You two do whatever. I'm leaving."
"What!? You're not going to stop him, Noki!?"
Splash. Splash. Splash.
I had already turned away and began walking. The sound of the water rippling beneath me resounded in my ears, granting me a sense of tranquility.
"Noki!" Ener cried out to me.
"It's not my job to babysit you two. Work out your issues on your own."
I knew full well what could happen if I left Loid unchecked.
Yet, I could no longer care.
"HAHAHA! LET'S FIGHT THEN, ENER! I'M SURE THAT WON'T BE A BORE! UNLESS YOU'RE CHICKEN! HEHAHAHAHA!"
"Damn it! I'll just have to stop you myself!"
Slish.
A single sound made me turn around.
Though, it was already too late to regret my decision. Still, even then, I still didn't regret anything.
In the distance, Loid stood as he held Soul up to the illusive moon with his hand piercing his flesh.
Black dust exuded from the pup's wound as the rest of the primordials stared in horror and Soul's body quickly lost its opaqueness.
Loid had gone off the deep end.
"IF I KILL ALL OF YOU, NOBODY WILL STAND IN MY WAY! HEY! HEY NOKI! HELP ME OUT, WOULD YA? LETS HAVE FUN TOGETHER!"
I stared at him with a blank face as he tossed the translucent Soul aside with a simple swipe of his arm. In that instant, a large black scythe appeared in his hand. He stared at us like a grim reaper starving for dinner.
With a short sigh, I turned away and raised my hand as I waved goodbye. The 'God Eater' was no longer of my concern.
Soon after, I heard Ener yelling.
"STOP THIS, LOID!"
A scream. Likely Vessa. The two of them were like siblings, after all.
"SOUL!"
Then fighting.
The waters were no longer clear, but pitch black like the place we came from.
I turned back to take a glance at the chaos I was leaving behind.
Vessa ran, shrinking and turning black. She vanished from sight in an instant.
~Since when could she shapeshift?
The question flew through my mind, but was quickly forgotten as my gaze wandered over to Ener and Loid.
Ener hovered, his shining white wings spread out, a javelin of light in hand. He swirled through the air as he evaded my brother's relentless barrage of attacks. Javelin and scythe, light and darkness, constantly clashing.
Splash. Splash. Splash.
The sound of the ripples caused by the battle once again gave me a sense of tranquility as I pondered where to go next.
"Maybe I'll try living with the mortals. Maybe that won't be as boring."
As I drifted off the edge of that temporarily, illusive dream world, there was one last thing I heard.
"BROTHER, I'LL GET YOU TO JOIN ME ONE DAY! JUST YOU WAIT!"
A simple shout from Loid. His voice cracked as if he were crying.
I did not understand why he cried, nor did I really care.
I just wanted out of this endless pit of nothing.
So I kept on walking.
"The mortal realm… it'll be more fun, right? I wonder what humans are like." I thought as the sounds behind me quickly faded.
