Two days later…
Helena finally stepped into the mansion, long past midnight. The corridors were quiet, the air heavy with sleep, but Diana and Eric were waiting near the entrance as though they had sensed her arrival. Relief flashed in both their faces the moment they saw her unharmed.
"You're back," Diana said quickly, rushing forward.
Helena brushed dust from her cloak and sighed, adjusting the travel-worn tunic and riding pants beneath it. "I lost my horse, though."
Eric exhaled sharply, his posture straightening as if that was the least of their worries. "The important thing is that Your Grace is safe," he replied, his tone earnest and steady.
Diana's sharp eyes scanned Helena's hands. "Did you get the fruit?" she asked.
Helena gave a small nod. "Yes. But I'd like a bath first."
Her words might have been enough, but both Diana and Eric's gazes slid downward, and they froze.
"Uh…" Diana blinked, her lips parting. "Did you… pick up a puppy on the road?"
